People are too quick to judge AND give something the label of "commercial" Just because it's different? Who knows. I do believe people need to be more open minded, and I also beleive people deserve by full means to have the right to express their opinion. But for the most part I feel people place labels and tags and views without really looking. - -FS ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 09:39:31 -0400 From: RsbrySwrrrl@aol.com Subject: Richmond, VA Tori Birthday Event for RAINN I just wanted to let everyone know that the Tori Birthday Event for RAINN in Richmond, VA will be held this Saturday, August 24 from 7-10 PM at Bandito's Burrito Lounge (733 W. I was on the email discussion list for NY's party last year, and they put in a lot of money and hard work and didn't get nearly as many people (or donations) as they hoped. i believe they also had a venue cancel on them and they had to find another place last minute. trying to learn from their mistakes, i decided to host a coffee-house event, where it would be FREE for me, even though it's small. I was the only one preparing the event - luckily a young resident in my town wanted to help and helped arrange some of the musical performers. I had lots of great door prizes donated, but by the time i printed programs for the evening and informational flyers to distribute, and all the extra stuff at staples, i spent almot $200. donations came to about $250. it was a great night, but it is a lot of hard work. you need several people who are organized to run a fundraiser like this. I am not surprised that NYC cancelled - i could have given my money directly to RAINN. (I hope that i spread awareness of the organization at least!) As for advertising: I am on a discussion list for the hosts, and knew all about the parties across the country. Mikewhy had info about it on his website and directed you to RAINN or to RavenOak's tori fest website. I emailed everyone on this list for my party in NJ. If anyone has suggestions of where else to get the word out, please let me or RAINN know! One party host mentioned sending info to over 100 newspapers and radio stations and not a single one put out an ad. I plastered my town with flyers (if i had volunteers it would have been in other towns too). I tried getting it in 3 local newspapers to no avail. Next year, RAINN will do this again (i'm sure). The parties are from july - september - to celebrate Tori's bday and RAINN's bday. The best place for info is at RAINN (you can email Kelley Bevis, who is in charge of the parties) or Ravenoak's site http://www.torifest.com/ Bottom line: it's a lot harder and less rewarding than expected. If you have advice, send it to Kelley to share with next year's hosts. If you want to help, get a group of people in your area. There's still a few parties left so go out there, have fun, and support RAINN!!!!!!! Crawford Not entirely commerically accessible, due to its lyrical content, and, soundwise it could make the average listener go "what the hell is this?"...but more thoughtful people, or people who are currently going through those same emotions Tori projects into the song, I think would stop and be like "Wow, let's check this out." It's the people who are in that stage of life or even musical maturity that would be naturally drawn to that song, I think. The people who are ready to stop and listen to that song. "Hey Jupiter" also came out towards the end of all that "Women in Music" stage that got so big in the '90's, and so that would have inclined more listeners as well, since, let's just admit it, it was "ok" to do that and appreciate female musicians that weren't selling their bodies, then. Those are just my thoughts on the matter. The outer rim of the CD contains information that the CD keeps checking and what is stored there is causing the ripping to screw up. You can go down to the store and buy a magic marker and scribble out the outer rim of the CD, place it in your drive & Blammo! You can now play it on your Mac or rip mp3s for your own enjoyment! (had to throw in the Mac reference, because Macs are awesome!!) Seriously, that's all you have to do. I've had to do it a couple of times and it has worked for me each time. And I know a lot of you won't want to deface Tori's CD like that, but if it *is* protected, then I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. While I know you're kidding, there have been moves towards that kind of thing. The initial promo for Radiohead's "Kid A" was distributed on some kind of memory stick walkman style affair to prevent copying, and one of the major labels were trying to implement some mad new CD single format in the UK (I don't think it ever got launched) with proprietary discs and their own walkman. I forget the details, but it was an utterly nuts non-standard format. A mail I received from someone at Sony UK said... "We have a poor chap here who has to take all the anti-Key2Audio calls from angry customers. When the Celine Dion album came out, he was looking a bit broken..." I can only hope that they realise it's more trouble than it's worth. Mike ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 19:46:10 -0400 From: "camaris" Subject: Re: Ftch vs TVaB vs SLG (long!) Mariam here. I am writing to put in my 2 cents about this whole copyrighting issue. If you read the transcript of Tori's interview with KROQ radio you will see what Tori thinks about the matter. When her cd comes out she has said- as many of you all know- that the cd will have multimedia on it that takes you to Scarlet's Web- a website with maps stories and extra songs. She has said that this cd serves 2 purposes, it lets her share more songs with the people who really support her financially by buying cds. Also it lets her fit more maps and info. onto the cd. For some time it will prevent people who are "burn" or "rip" happy from getting the whole album. I think this is wise and I respect this. She also said that the first press to get the UNFINISHED tracks off of the new album got it on a SONY walkman that was glued shut. This has to be done as these tracks were not finished- they were drafts and she didn't want her fans to make judgments based on these tracks. Anyway I think Tori is on the right track. She is being realistic and I applaud her for her new merge with Epic. Her relationship with Atlantic had becomed strained- so this new alliance with Epic could prove to give her new freedom. Tori is a smart lady- she will do what is in her best interest ;-) Cheers- Mariam Halstead (Virginia, USA) ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V7 #189 *************************************
