I was in London last week shopping in this small shop that sold wool pasminas, scarves, sweaters, etc. It was a cute shop and I was at the end of my travel money, so I was trying to figure out which ONE item I would buy...all of a sudden I heard the first few notes of Silent All These YEars. I turned to my friend an said-"Tori AMos!" the shop keeper heard me and she turned out to be a big Tori fan...she was like "She was here-in my shop!" She told me that Tori had been there and spent over 400 pds in Pasminas. She said that Tori was there for hours trying on all these pasminas, etc and that she bought some for herself and others on her crew. She also told me that Tori told her that she would name her next album after her favorite color pasmina-scarlet! Isn't that cool??? ok-sorry if this was too irrelevant for you guys! s. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 13:14:44 -0400 From: "centaur" Subject: Re: Interesting Tori/Scarlet Occurence in London It wasn't irrelevant at all. Thanks! We need more cool stories like this from our eyes and ears with feet in Great Britain, where Tori is most likely to be spotted. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 11:13 AM Subject: Interesting Tori/Scarlet Occurence in London > > Hello- > well, normally I'm not an active particpant on this mailing list, but I just > had such a cool Tori Story encounter that I had to share it. > I was in London last week shopping in this small shop that sold wool > pasminas, scarves, sweaters, etc. It was a cute shop and I was at the end of > my travel money, so I was trying to figure out which ONE item I would > buy...all of a sudden I heard the first few notes of Silent All These YEars. > I turned to my friend an said-"Tori AMos!" the shop keeper heard me and she > turned out to be a big Tori fan...she was like "She was here-in my shop!" > She told me that Tori had been there and spent over 400 pds in Pasminas. I believe Tori mentions Oliver Stone... well because her stuff is off the wall occassionally ;) and I guess Oliver asked to use "Me and a Gun" in a scene for Natural Born Killers. Tori read the script and told him "no" because that is not what the song is about or trying to convey.. something like that.. then again, this is all heresay from rdt and other lists, so I could be asbolutely and totally wrong. lovely disclaimer, no? - -Elisha http://sirengrrrri.livejournal.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 12:35:39 -0700 From: "Tony Fernandes" Subject: Fw: Interesting Tori/Scarlet Occurence in London wrote: "She also told me that Tori told her that she would name her next album after her favorite color pasmina-scarlet! Does anyone on this list have any way of confirming this???? Thanks for sharing that with us! Tony What's more likely? That an all-powerful mysterious god created the universe and then decided not to give any proof of his existence? Or, that he simply doesn't exist at all? And that we created him so that we wouldn't have to feel so small and alone. -Eleanor Arroway, Contact ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 22:09:49 +0200 From: "conny g" Subject: Re: Interesting Tori/Scarlet Occurence in London Q hi! that isnt irrelevant! but can you tell me, what "pasmina" is...i know its a color..but..i dont know which color...can someone explain!!???? so, tori is now at "home"....good to know :-) greetings conny >From: Mac456789@aol.com >To: precious-things@smoe.org >Subject: Interesting Tori/Scarlet Occurence in London >Date: Wed, 31 Jul 2002 11:13:15 EDT > > >Hello- >well, normally I'm not an active particpant on this mailing list, but I >just >had such a cool Tori Story encounter that I had to share it. >I was in London last week shopping in this small shop that sold wool >pasminas, scarves, sweaters, etc. It was a cute shop and I was at the end >of >my travel money, so I was trying to figure out which ONE item I would >buy...all of a sudden I heard the first few notes of Silent All These >YEars. >I turned to my friend an said-"Tori AMos!" the shop keeper heard me and she >turned out to be a big Tori fan...she was like "She was here-in my shop!" >She told me that Tori had been there and spent over 400 pds in Pasminas. >She >said that Tori was there for hours trying on all these pasminas, etc and >that >she bought some for herself and others on her crew. I don't think we've had much of that here, but I'm not surprised you've seen it. It's easy to get lost in detail in general anyway, but especially with Tori Amos music. (People also tend not to glean the subtleties of things that are said; doubly so for things Tori says because she often speaks so arcanely, and she addresses topics that are inherently complex and rarely spoken of.) I think it's crucial to keep one's eye on the larger picture and let the details more or less take care of themselves. I also think one has to have enough background in relevant areas to know what one's being presented with, here. With a little investigation into mythology--especially works of Joseph Campbell--Jungian analysis, and the history and culture of some of the people indigenous to this continent, I think one would have enough behind them to be able to read the signs of what's being dealt with in the coming album without much trouble. > but i agree with people who say that tori seems to be tapping into the > tone of the country last fall. Yes, she said in the Ann Powers interview she'd been doing that, she just didn't say she was doing it specifically in relation to her coming album. The signs are there to be read. > [the new songs] seem like narratives but not necessarily about tori or > aspects of herself. they're not personally confessional, they're > observational. In some of these six songs, yes, absolutely. She's gone outside her personal life dramas more than usual and is *herself* looking at some bigger pictures. In Amber Waves it's more about what someone observes surrounding a sociological situation such as pornography, or as in Gold Dust, how one feels in their heart when getting older when one realizes which were the meaningful moments in their life. > they have characters. the most personal song seems to be "gold dust," > but even that isn't written in the same style as something like "suede" > or "cloud on my tongue." It's written from a perspective of reflection. It isn't as if a current or recent narrative environment, it takes a look back at a life. Some of her songs instantly put you right THERE in a moment and in a situation: "A little dust never stopped me none/he liked my shoes, I kept them on," [Honey] or "No one's picking up the phone/guess it's me and me." [Hey Jupiter] And I *love* that about those songs. They're immediately evocative of a story about something that's going on right *then*. It transports one *there* as soon as those songs begin. I find that to be engaging, beautiful, even transcendental, but in some ways, it seems to me to be indicative of a higher level of consciousness when one is able to get past their personal perspective and observe things as if from a loftier, more universal viewpoint; and it seems to encourage the person experiencing the work--in this instance a song--to *also* see things from a more universal perspective, rather than sheerly from a viewpoint of personal interest. I find this to be more mature and less egocentric, and I think part of the message of this album has to be that we need to be less self-oriented and more cognizant of sharing a planet with other beings, and all that that entails. I believe this and I believe she'll talk about such ideas when doing press for Scarlet's Walk. > andrea > (oh, i guess this is my delurk. hello everyone! beth w. dragged me > into this.
