I'm excited about this album. I really am. I've already shared my thoughts on "A Sorta Fairytale" (yes, poppier and sweeter than her other material, but I believe in exploring every facet of life and every facet of being a person, and a simple and sweet little love story is just another part of that...), and have been listening to the other ones, and man, I can't wait for the album. I haven't listened to the others very much due to limited time, but I'm sure I'll get to know them very well eventually, and they will reveal that they are much more than what I thought on first listen. "Gold Dust" made me cry. The string arrangement is gorgeous! It just touches me, and brings me back to childhood memories when I was young and free and unfettered by responsibility. When I was so much closer to nature, and things were so much simpler. At first listen, I wasn't immediately hooked on "Pancake"...probably because of the wurlitzer. Makes an interesting sound, but damnit, I want my harpsichord! Oh well. The lyrics are defiant, and I like that. Someone said that "Taxi Ride" and "A Sorta Fairytale" sounded very similar...I agree. I do love both of them, though. "Taxi Ride" could defitinely be another radio single. The guitar on it, though low, is very catchy, as well as the melody she sings. And I'm glad to see that, though under a different name, "Just Another Dead Fag" made it to the album. Now where is this "Snow Cherries from France"? :) Too bad it won't be on this album, according to Neil Gaiman. "Amber Waves" hasn't hooked me yet. Though, I like the Northern Lights part. I'm glad the piano comes forth to be more noticeable on this one. And, I think that even this one could be a single. "Crazy". There's that damn wurlitzer again. The wurli, though beautiful on its own, does nothing for me but muddle with Tori's beautiful vocals. The harpsichord provides a raw yet awesome contrast, and the bosendorfer, and even the organ, has always accompanied Tori's voice very beautifully, but the wurli and her voice just blend in together...it's so....harmonious...I guess I just like more distinction. But, that's just me. Everyone else may think differently, or perhaps hear differently. :) I could even be getting my instruments confused. Yeah, so there's my thoughts so far. Toodles. I really am. I've already shared my > thoughts on "A Sorta Fairytale" (yes, poppier and sweeter than her other > material, but I believe in exploring every facet of life and every facet > of being a person, and a simple and sweet little love story is just > another part of that...) . . . Yes, the single/radio edit can easily be taken as a simple love song. This is the main reason I say it's a Trojan Horse. People will buy the album based on this edit of the single and be in for a surprise. Here are additional lyrics on the album version of "Fairytale" that aren't on the single: down New Mexico way something about the open road I knew that he was looking for some Indian Blood and find a little in you find a little in me we may be on this road but We're just Imposters in this country you know So we go along and we said we'd fake it feel better with Oliver Stone till I almost smacked him seemed right that night and I don't know what takes hold out there in the Desert cold These guys think they must Try and just get over on us (I must also note the sound of an authentic American Indian rattle used in this section. It comes in right when it begins. I have ears and I know this ethnographic music well enough to know what I'm hearing. It goes right along with the Taos drum kit Matt's playing.) My friend Jason reminded me that Oliver Stone asked Tori if he could use "Me and a Gun" in Natural Born Killers, but she saw the script and that he wanted to use it in a scene involving killing and she said that wasn't what the song was about. Anyway, it sounds to *me* like a hell of a lot of anger in the full version of this song. Clearly, she's finally dealing head-on with what is our legacy here in the U.S. of--let's face it--genocide. Part of me had been wondering what was taking her so long to get around to this topic, although it's clear she's been dealing with plenty of other issues; typically, more personal ones. This has always been in the background. And now here it is. In the wake of 9-11 and the needs we all have as humans to deal with who we really are inside to find our spiritual center as a country and as individuals, we in the U.S. have to come to terms with our history and own up to it before we can move on to who we are today as a people. (This holds as a personal truth, too. Individuals have to deal with past traumas and other experiences before they can realize their own spiritual awakening; otherwise, it just expresses itself in other ways which can be damaging to one's self. I know some of you know exactly how that happens.) The idea of dealing with this stuff, to me, is so we can lead ourselves to a better place, one that's more reflective of who we really are and how we got to this point. Things are emotionally and spiritually anarchic and drifting now in this culture, and people have lost most of the values that were *basic* to the American Indians. We have a lot to learn from their cultures--what remains of them. So, there are multiple reasons for dealing with the Indian issues. Really; expect her to talk a lot about this in interviews. I'm anxious to see some of them come out. I was told she's already doing phone interviews, and was told to expect interviews in some big magazines. That's all for now. I wish I had more time for a real discussion. I feel rushed. I hope I didn't misspeak.
