Without the Oliver Stone Bridge (I don't know if it's a bridge but I think it is so I'm calling it that) the song is very easy to understand, at least on a surface level. The only thing you'd need to know is that the Ventura (aka the 101) is a freeway in Los Angeles. With that information the lyrics are pretty basic. People will easily assign meaning to it without having to think very hard, which is what makes the average listener happy. The Oliver Stone screams JUICY TORI MOMENT!!!! to me. Let's hope so. If I were at Epic I would put out a single with the radio edit but also have the album version, another album track, and some b-sides as well. That way if someone who is new to Tori and likes the radio version picks up the single they can be eased into Tori's style without having to buy the full album. If the person likes what they hear on the single they will not be able to resist buying the full album after. You know how it is with Tori, either you love her or you don't. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 19:48:17 -0500 From: "Nadyne Mielke" Subject: Re: Official A Sorta Fairytale Lyrics Mariana Furtado said: [snip] >If I were at Epic I would put out a single with the >radio edit but also have the album version, another >album track, and some b-sides as well. In the US, singles just don't sell. They do sell in Europe and the UK, but relatively recent rules regarding singles in the UK have drastically changed matters. Those rules limit the number of songs that can be found on a single, at least if you want that single to count towards chart success. I seem to recall that the max is three songs. Assuming that my hazy memory is something close to correct, that means that they could only do the radio edit, the album version, and one bee-side, in the UK. They could do multiple UK singles (how about a return to LE- and UtP-era limited edition singles that actually are limited?), of course, but that doesn't really get around the fundamental issue of the limitation of number of songs. And why bother releasing a single in the US at all, when their sales are negligible at best? Not that I'm disagreeing with you. I definitely think that you're right about Epic trying to make this album radio-friendly. I just don't think that we can get our hopes up for interesting singles. :( /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 18:34:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Mariana Furtado Subject: Re: Official A Sorta Fairytale Lyrics - --- Nadyne Mielke wrote: > I wonder if Epic is really planning around singles, > or > even if they -should-. I've always loved singles, especially when it's off an album that I don't necessarily want to spend the money on OR when it's an artist I love and the single has b-sides. Any idea why singles don't sell? I thought that it was just that the record companies were trying to eliminate singles to force you to buy the full album. > They could do multiple UK singles (how about a > return > to LE- and UtP-era limited edition singles that > actually are limited?) Ahh, the good old days. I wish. Don't they know that we *will* buy them? Think about the value of the limited edition stuff today. People totally go for that. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 19:28:34 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: Official A Sorta Fairytale Lyrics At 18:34 17-07-02 -0700, Mariana Furtado wrote: >--- Nadyne Mielke wrote: > > I wonder if Epic is really planning around singles, > > or > > even if they -should-. Any >idea why singles don't sell? I thought that it was >just that the record companies were trying to >eliminate singles to force you to buy the full album. Economics. Why spend $5-$8 for a single with 2-4 songs (or, worse, $8-$12 for an EP with ~5 songs) when you can purchase the whole album for around $10 that has 10-15 songs? Add to that the fact that many artists don't really have interesting bee-sides, and the single often contains a couple of remixes or even just another couple of album tracks, and it doesn't make much sense. In the UK, though, singles are significantly cheaper than the album. New singles are often discounted to GBP0.99 or GBP1.99, whereas the album will cost GBP9.99 when it comes out, and up to GBP18.99 later. > > They could do multiple UK singles (how about a > > return > > to LE- and UtP-era limited edition singles that > > actually are limited?) >Ahh, the good old days. You can't assume anything about sales because certain specific items have increased in value. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 23:19:39 EDT From: Hotpink9876@aol.com Subject: Interesting view I was wondering, I pulled out an old tape I had forgotten about of Tori Amos, it was a concert with Alanis, anyway, someone did something to provoke an interesting reaction out of Tori, she stared at someone in the audience for a bit, then flipped them of for a good 30 second, and then told them to "eat my pussy" and I was wondering if anyone knew the story behind that? It was quite the interesting thing, it was during her song Waitress. Always, veni ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V7 #158 *************************************
