I'm so curious to know! I'm asking because if you were one of the fans that got to see a concert.. of which a song was selected to be put on the live CD.. do you have memories of SEEING her perform the song while you hear it again and again? I'm sure you do, but.. do tell about it! :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 02:15:41 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V7 #115 In a message dated 5/27/02 10:21:55 PM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > Well, Bachlorette is just OK. Another thing to appreciate Tori for, on the Strange Little Girls cd, the second song (i can't recall the name right now, download the original song, it's a rap song and IMO sounds horrible. If I had heard the song before Tori's version, I would have been scared to hear her version of it. But she turns a yucky rap song into such an an eerie, amazing song. When I d/led the rap song, I appreciated Tori even more for listening to that song and turning it into sucha perfect creation. - -Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 12:38:41 -0400 From: Erin Martin Subject: Re: cloud on my tongue interp There's a lot going on in this song. I know these lines are out of order but here are my thoughts. "someone's knocking on my kitchen door" - -the kitchen is a place that evokes warmth and nurturing tendencies. so it's like he's trying to get in good with her. "leave the wood outside what" - -he's trying to flatter her and she doesn't want it "all the girls here are freezing cold" - -he wasn't there when it counted "leave me with your borneo/i said leave me the way i was before" she wants a warmth that's more permanent than the tokens of flattery he offers. "don't stop now what you're doing, what you're doing my ugly one" - -she hates him but loves the way he makes her feel when he flatters her "hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair" - -he can't cover up all times he's cheated on her or all the girls he's hurt "it won't be fair if i hate her,if i ate her" - -she can't blame the other womon. yet, she also can't totally absolve her (eating/accepting). "you can go now, you can go now, you're already in there. i'll be wearing your tattoo" - -he's affected her forever even though she wants him totally out of her life "got a cloud sleeping on my tongue/he goes then it goes and" - -this line can be taken many ways. i think one idea is that she's silent, like she wants to say all this to him but there may as well be a cloud on her tongue so she can't. i think it also means that she's still strung out on this dream of him changing. "kiss the violets as they're waking up" - -she's coming around, trying to get up the eggs to ask him to leave, but he pours on more flattery. "i'm already in circles and circles..." she can't win. she hates him but she loves something about the way he makes her feel. he can't leave or stay; she's in circles. this song is so great. :) erin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 14:32:20 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: To Venus and Back Becka said: > there was a discussion a long while back, when the cd was released.. of > pinpointing which song was from what concert.. but i never saved any of > the results... I like Eminem, but I didn't *ever* dance to it, really. It's scary and I only listen to it to get to the rest of the album but when I do I'm sitting here chuckling at myself cuz I refuse to skip a song to get to the rest (I'm weird like that.) and it's scaring the hell out of me and I laugh to keep it from scaring me worse. SO.. with that in mind, I was almost petrified about hearing Tori's version.. I finally got up the nerve (I put off listening to the album for a few days because of that--being a little too chicken to buck up and listen to her version), and heard it.. it's haunting, and the music is more appropriate.. but.. since she's going from the slain woman's POV.. something about it seems more.. strangely enough.. *soothing* versus Eminem's version.. sort of.. reassuring me in a way that, damn it, the woman is GOING to be heard, by golly.. it's hard to explain, but I hope I did it well enough to get my point across. Hello, Gang: An hour version of the Ann Powers interview of 12 January 2002 was scheduled to be telecast several times late this month on cable TV in Manhattan over the CUNY station. I haven't heard anyone say anything about this since it should have been shown multiple times already. Does anyone know if anybody managed to record it? I'd be pleased to have "just" an audio recording of the entire event, but both people who told me they would send me a copy haven't replied to my most recent emails on the topic, so not only am I seemingly not going to end up being able to hear this thing but I may be losing friends over it. I'd have sought a recording elsewhere if I'd known things would end up like this. I had a ticket to the thing someone got me and I couldn't bring myself to go. I was SURE recordings of it would be all over the place within a week, and I wasn't prepared to deal with the insanity of going to the damn thing in person. It's now been four-and-a-half months. I am sofa king we ta did. I can't stand rap, so I might be biased here, but if I had heard that song without hearing Tori's, I probably would have missed the whole story in it, etc just because it sounds so bad. But Tori used every word in there and was able to come out with sucha creepy, incredible way of "singing" it that fits the words a whole lot better than the original song. I don't find it soothing, but I love the eeriness about it that Eminem totally lost with the rap. At the risk of rambling, I'll just add that if Tori had written the song herself, it would be amazing, but I find it even more amazing that she could hear the Eminem version and even think of turning it into what she did. - -Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 20:25:07 EDT From: Mermann658@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V7 #115 In a message dated 5/28/2002 7:47:18 AM Central Daylight Time, JNe9027355@aol.com writes: > honestly, the part that gets me the most is.. > what does- > -borneo > -"it won't be fair if i hate her, if i ate her" > mean??? "And now, Vasilisa", she said. "Take this sack of millet and pick it over, seed by seed, and mind that you take out all the black bits. And if you don't I shall eat you up". And Baba Yaga closed her eyes and began to snore. Guess I take alot of Tori's meanings from fairy tales; the use of metaphor in those stories as well as mythology. Baba Yaga to me is "my ugly one" I could go on and on about the symbolism in "Vasalisa", but the above link does tell the story and offers some explanation of meanings below the surface.
