They got a lot of media exposure > together. i love meryn cadell! i have to disagree about the lilith fair type things. somewhere tori said something about not wanting to do shows where people are sitting around eating fried chicken on the grass (hehe). my favorite tori shows have been more like theater productions: classy place, quiet and still audience, sound so clear you can hear a pin drop (i actually did hear a PEN drop in oakland this last tour). i know it sounds melodramatic, but during the 5.5 weeks show i saw i left right after tori played (skipping the alanis half) cuz i didn't want to taint the experience with someone else's performance. (and i really don't like alanis at all). about promoting her, i think that if 1000 oceans had gotten any radio play it would have been an instant hit. i personally can't stand the song, but it is immediately accessible and resembles (in structure) lots of other successful ballads. maybe the mistake is that her work isn't promoted enough, or that radio stations and the suits behind them aren't interested in female musicians that break the mold, or maybe the fans that are attracted to 1000 oceans don't like the rest of her material because 1000 oceans isn't really representative of the rest of her music. or maybe all of the above. if i'm on tori missionary duty, i always start a newbie off with little earthquakes. it's what got me hook line and sinker, and the simplicity of the music and lyrics makes for accessibility, and the style and intensity just foreshadow what's to come in later albums. maybe the marketing guru's should choose the most accessible, yet still signature tori, song on each album and sink some serious promotion bucks into it. i feel like atlantic merely tolerated her presence, and when they did promote her albums, it was often a misguided attempt to sell her as a sheryl crow or shirley manson, and they did it half-heartedly and therefore half-assed. hopefully epic won't make the same mistake. but the bottom line is that as long as tori keeps getting contracts with labels that can churn the albums out as fast as she can make them, i'm a happy fan. whatever it takes to keep her in the power seat during those negotiations. redstamen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2002 03:19:00 EST From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: tori:live and uncut In a message dated 3/14/02 11:22:56 PM Pacific Standard Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > The worst reaction I get from them is if they see me > playing a boot CD or video from one of her concerts. I hadn't heard anything of Tori until FTCH. The first song I heard was Spark on a mainstream radio station. I'm not sure how long after that they had some contest and I called in and won. The prize? FTCH. I was so hooked on it I had to find more of her stuff. I was currently subscribed to BMG and found that they had several of her albums. I bought them all at once. LE, UTP, BFP, and the Hey Jupiter single. I listened to nothing else for a long time. Then I discovered a college station in the area that played more of her stuff and that's how I heard about Venus. I went to the store on the first day it was available and my bf at the time bought it for me. The clerk at the store was also a fan and gave me a free poster. I was supposed to go to her 1998 concert when she was here in my town, but plans fell through. I was upset for a while. I finally got to see her on this tour. My seats were fabulous and I was speechless throughout the whole concert. I can't wait for the next one. ~~*~*~*~*~*Andrea ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2002 17:37:57 +0000 From: "Sarah Jenkins" Subject: my story My roomate in college back in 1996 loved Tori & Neil Gaiman. She dragged me to a show and I couldn't say no because this girl was the sweetest. I thought Tori was a lesbian chick. At the end I didn't want to leave the hall. :) That was 5 1/2 years ago. Since then I've met her 3 times and have seen her 20 some times in concert. P.S. I love to talk about Tori so I'm always looking for e-mail Pen Pals (hint hint) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Mar 2002 18:00:54 From: "Lauren DePhillips" Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V7 #59 >I've listened to gorgeous live versions today of 'Daniel' (Elton), 'River' (Joni), & 'Famous >Blue Raincoat' (Leonard Cohen, & the only covers of his I've ever had time before for were >the John Cale & Jeff Buckley versions of 'Hallelujah'). I know this is rather off topic...but Rufus Wainwright has a cover of Hallelujah that's on the Shrek soundttrack..it's really quite good IMO. I haven't heard those other covers but I definitely like it better than the original and lyrically it is somewhat different. lauren15@hotmail.com http://www.geocities.com/lilya8 ********************** "The way I see, I was really fortunate to get a serious head dunking when I was baptized. This was 1993, and I had read reviews that LE was amazing. So I chose that CD to complete my order of 12 CDs. I have never looked back. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good and reputable Tori chat room. I know her old website used to have a chat (although there weren't really ever any people in there and it was usually OT), but now that's defunct. I checked the dent and either my searching skills are very well honed (is that the right term?) or there simply isn't one out there. (Which I find hard to believe.) I'd really like to chat real-time with some Toriphiles about all things Tori. I figured this was the best group to ask. Hi everyone. I'm designing artwork sleeves for bootlegs, and I was wondering if you have some clear shots of tori performing or at a M&G, and wouldn't mind me using them (with full credit of course) in some inserts, could you give me a quick shout? Thanks so much.
