[ Double-click this line for list subscription options ] Torifans, http://toriset.dyndns.org Some of you are familiar with the Tori Amos Setlist Database, at least in some iteration or another from years and tours past. I am pleased to announce that the new version of the site is finally complete and ready for use. What is the database? Quite simply, it is a site that has all setlists from all concerts that Tori has performed from 1996 through the present. You can view and sort information such as the number of times a song has been played along with the debut dates and date each song was most recently played. Sorting options include alphabetically by song, numerically by number of times played, and by album and date. Additionally, you can use the site as a quick link to all reviews and setlists from the The Dent (http://www.thedent.com). Anyone who follows Tori shows knows that she plays a very different show each night -- so far this tour she has already played 60 different songs in 13 shows -- and she's just hitting stride in what is turning out to be a very amazing tour. I have a number of plans for the future of the site -- I hope that I can also get some good ideas from you guys out there. There are links on the site detailing ways that you can help the database and the ideas I have for the future. So please check out the site and print out some stats before your next Tori show -- thanks for listening! http://toriset.dyndns.org Sped (Sped@erstads.com) PS -- As a sneak preview for this group, I also plan on rolling into this database a list of all shows that have been taped and are available in one form or another... - ------- End of forwarded message ------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 12:37:03 -0400 From: "Danielle Shaw" Subject: Boston Globe article The Boston concert last night was truly wonderful.... Found this article from the Boston Globe online this morning. - -Danielle http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/289/living/Deep_emotive_Amos_keeps_the_spell_alive+.shtml MUSIC REVIEW Deep, emotive Amos keeps the spell alive By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 10/16/2001 The love affair between Tori Amos and Boston continued full force last night. ''This is one of my favorite places,'' said Amos, who played to a sold-out Wang Theatre crowd that listened with an undivided attention given only to the loftiest of pop oracles. Amos, whose intensely personal career has been a kind of therapy in motion, delivered an outstanding performance that was as elegantly staged as it was performed. Each song carried different subtleties in lighting, from side spotlights that framed her chiseled face onto a distant screen, to kaleidoscopic designs projected on several rear curtains that also changed as the songs went along. Remaining constant, in the center of the stage, was Amos, resplendent in white tails that made her look like a Liberace for the new millennium. This pop-opera look fit a number of her songs, which rode her rich vocalese and passionate lyricism about breaking through stale relationships, finding one's heart, and never settling for the norm. Although she has had bands in the past, during dates at the FleetCenter and Avalon, Amos returned to a solo setting last night, switching among several keyboards, including her familiar Bosendorfer piano and a freshly added Wurlitzer, which belonged to Country Joe & the Fish when the group played the original Woodstock Festival in 1969. ''Its name is Wurly,'' Amos said playfully. Most of the evening, however, was far from playful. Amos remains one of pop's most vividly emotive artists, falling somewhere between the ethereal eccentricities of Kate Bush and the nobility of a Peter Gabriel. And while her elastic scatting, chanting, and eerie vocal sound effects may not be for everyone, they add up to a unique presentation that marks Amos as one of the most adventurous, indeed visionary, singers in the pop field. Surprisingly, she downplayed her new album, ''Strange Little Girls,'' an album of cover songs by men, siphoned through a female perspective. The opening tune came from it and was striking - Eminem's '''97 Bonnie & Clyde,'' about a berserk male who kills his wife - but Amos was hidden behind a curtain during it. She then came out for her own song ''Icicle,'' and the rest of the one-hour-45-minute show was filled with her own tunes, save for a few, such as Lloyd Cole's ''Rattlesnakes,'' Dave Loggins's ''Please Come to Boston'' (a hammy choice), and a spectacular ''Somewhere Over the Rainbow.'' That brought a ray of hope, and followed her scarifying confessional about being raped as a young girl, ''Me & a Gun.'' The latter was done a cappella style, with a single spotlight on her face as though she were facing police interrogation. A chilling moment. Amos deserves a lot of credit for commanding the stage so thoroughly as a solo act - and also for keeping her ticket prices low (a high of $39 compared to $100-plus for the recent Bjork concert in the same venue). Opening act Rufus Wainwright, however, didn't fare as well. His nasal-inflected voice became as grating as his self-important hipster material. He seemed tired, and acted that way. Hey Everyone, I just wanted to comment on this because I think Philly is getting a bad rap here. Yes, there were ignorant people during Me and a Gun and yes, the crowd wasn't all that gracious to Rufus. However, nobody is mentioning the other half of the story. There were auidence members who went absoultely *crazy* over Rufus! A little bit more than half of the Tower Theatre was full when he played and a good majority of them were rooting Rufus on as if he were the main act. Nobody was balantly disrespectful to him. The Tower is a big place with a high ceiling so the noises people generated echoed off everything and doubled the noise. Also, I don't think Tori cut her set short because she was unhappy with the crowd. She played 18 songs, which is normal as she has been playing between 18-20 songs per show. Futhermore, I can't see her playing a tribute song as to how great Philadelphia is if she was that unhappy with us. Add to that, some of the songs she played were just short songs, such as Twinkle and Josephine. Baker, Baker isn't all that long either. Don't let the few ignorant people that were annoying during Me and a Gun give you the impression the whole crowd was similiar. They weren't. The crowd was extremely high energy and loving. As for Tori herself she was giving us her all. She was very much into the show and I don't feel she could have been if the crowd wasn't giving her a reason to be. Anyways, I just felt I had to pick up for my home town. :-) Til the Chicken..., Michael *~I'm Much Stronger Than You Know...Sometimes I'm Not Afraid To Let It Show*~ - --Tori Amos - Cool On Your Island-- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 17:26:58 -0300 From: "Carlos Verrastro" Subject: Re: Philadelphia Auidence [was Re: Philly Show (long)] Good to hear that!, I am just happy they were some few ignorants and not more people, and as you say many interludes (such as twinkle or Josephine as well) were played so as a consequence the set shorten. Hi EWfs! Here I go again with the Weird questions! I know that during DEW DROP INN 96, Tori used Headphones when playing the harpsichord. I always though that she used them for that matter; however a couple of days ago I saw a few pictures taken at the House of Blues Performance, an she was using them when playing the Bosey. I have found a copule of recent photos that show her in using headphones when playinf the Wurly, Bosey or Rhodes. Here it is my question: 1-Did she used the headphones in the Harpsichord because the sound was so fragile that she barely could her it when playing? If not why did she used them? 2-Why she uses headphones when playing the Bosey (or Wurly o Rhodes) if they are Pianos and have not a similar structure to the Harpsichord sonically speaking? Anyone? :) Bye, Daniel "May the Faeries Guide U"- Tori Amos ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 21:10:37 EDT From: Mermann658@aol.com Subject: The Biggest Thickest Ever Sky The Biggest Thickest Ever Sky has recently had a major makeover. Anyone who is interested in the metaphor/symbolism of Tori's lyrics, or is looking for what a particular song may mean, might want to take a look at this site. It has over 600 pages of well-organized information on symbols and references in Tori's lyrics. Carl Jung had this to say about symbolism: "Every psychological expression is a symbol if we assume that it states or signifies something more and other than itself which eludes our present knowledge." For example, this is a quote from Tori about the character created for Real Men: "She's an androgynous being, like a seahorse. Her essence is anima/animus combined, of the joining of two in one. It's a woman who has really integrated her animus. And this is what she projects to the world. Neil Gaiman is convinced she's a he, but I don't agree. I think she's androgynous." - Tori Amos The concepts of Anima/Animus are Jungian: Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss-German psychoanalyst who was instrumental in bringing psychology into the twentieth century by developing one of several theories of the unconscious. His ground breaking work introduced the concepts of archetype, introversion, extroversion, Anima and Animus, the collective unconscious among others into our culture. If anyone could make sense of the unconscious and its habit of revealing itself only in symbolic form, it would be Carl Jung. >>> The Biggest Thickest Every Sky <<< >>> http://members.aol.com/gud4astorm/index.html <<< "Come up sometime 'n see me." - Mae West ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 22:27:42 -0400 From: ekrone1 Subject: lyric analysis/EDM/biggest thiskest ever sky Nice site, very easy to navigate. I remember a site i found, oh a few years ago that had quotes from what Tori had said about a few things/ her songs in interviews and such, and also in concert, when she says things right before she plays it. Anyone know? Im sure that site may be out there, somewhere in internet land... And I know Blue Skies is not Tori's song, but that would be a nice addition into the lyrics, as there are a few different remixes. And what I wouldnt give to see her do that live, with BT!! and has anyone heard Deeper Water by PMT? It is on Scott Henrys new album....(Tori did vocals on that song) I would love to hear her do more in EDM (electronic dance music). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 23:12:50 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V6 #174 In a message dated 9/19/2001 10:23:19 PM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > > But the mere act of male-to-female transformation has a far-reaching > effect on Eminem's " '97 Bonnie & Clyde." What's ironic, is that the Dent forums had a big thread about this, with Prince @dam leading the ranks saying..."well who does tori make her music for? her tits? of course she makes it for her fans!" and people were agreeing with this, incredible. The whole point of being an artist is for total self-creativity...not for pleasing others at all! If you dislike new work produced, then so be it. The artist either then attains new fans, or has a career recession. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 23:44:35 EDT From: JNe9027355@aol.com Subject: Re: BFP in the beginning In a message dated 9/22/2001 10:23:42 PM Pacific Daylight Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > Subject: Re: Eminem question, SLG praise > > YEP, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU, all this reminde meof the old BFP days when > everyone hated the album!, but after listening it became a classic.
