Due to a misunderstanding between friends who were buying us tickets for the show we ended up with tickets to both shows, and can only really go to the Sunday show (10-07), so I'd love to have a fan get the tickets for face value ($40 each - I'm not asking for the convenience charges) than scalp them on eBay or something. The tickets are Tier Sec-H J5-8, bought through Ticketmaster. I can mail them Priority Mail (preferred) but if necessary I may be able to meet you at the venue a couple hours before the show to hand them over; I can accept payment by check (though you may have to wait a day or so for me to cash it) or via Paypal since I've got an account there, or in cash if we're meeting at the venue. (If you happen to live in or near Baltimore, I can probably drop them by your place someday or meet you somewhere for the exchange, as that's where I live.) The sound quality is EXCELLENT. I have a very elaborate sound system in my car. It's been one of my hobbies for the last 14 years. Let's just say, to put it into perspective, I currently have over $6000 of equipment installed and well over 100 hours of my own labor invested in getting it "just the way I like it"...if there's such a thing!! I've been doing some tweaking with my stereo, so it's been out of commission ever since I bought SLG. So I've only been listening to it at home. Today, I finished with the car stereo and popped the CD in for the first time. Wow. I can't say it's my favorite album of hers. But I can say, hands down, that it is the best recorded album she has done. Her voice has a presence like she's really sitting on my dash singing to me. It's so smooth and thick. Her other albums are, in my opinion, much more emotionally moving and can still elicit tears now and again. However, hearing SLG for the first time on a good stereo, I have to say it's made quite a difference. There's a part of me that has to really respect the engineering aspect of this album. Good job Mr. Hawley!!! I haven't had much time to really listen to it yet on my system, but the beginning of Raining Blood has so much more there than I originally thought. Also, on Time, (I think) I can hear the saliva shifting in her mouth when she's enunciating. It's incredible. On BFP, (her second-best recorded album, I think) I can hear the same thing, especially on Putting the Damage On. Her voice on that album has an awesome presence as well, but not as impressive as the songs on SLG. Wow. And don't even get me started on the piano. One of the greatest tasks of any stereo system is to realistically reproduce a piano. In other words, it's EXTREMELY difficult. If you can get a system to faithfully portray a piano as it naturally sounds, then that system would theoretically pretty much play any type of music without flaw. I have to say that her piano on this album is pretty damn pure. I'm very impressed. And finally, the soundstage and imaging are excellent. It seems like each instrument has it's own place in that listening "space" in between the speakers. I usually only run accross this type of thing when sound engineers use several different microphones to record a piece of music. For example, I have a few CDs that use multi-micing during recording of live jazz and classical music. Each musician will literally have a microphone sitting in front of them during the recording process. When I play these CDs you are not only able to pick out each individual instrument from the other, but you can also literally point to their location during playback. I can say that the piano is low and to the far right near the kick panel, and that the violinist is sitting in my passenger seat. It's very cool and only a small percentage of recordings are done this way. However, I suppose when DVD-audio gets big this will be the norm. Anyway, I immediately noticed that SLG has these qualities. Not all the songs, unfortunately, but some. It would be SOOO cool if she could go back and re-master her older albums with whatever "genius" Mark used on this one. That would be way cool. Oh...I'm so looking forward to her next studio album... Strange Little Girls -- its title derived from the Stranglers' "Strange Little Girl," which is included here -- means to interpret 12 songs through the eyes of 13 women (one song, apparently, features twins). On "Bonnie and Clyde '97," a reworking of Eminem's controversial song about murdering his wife in front of his daughter, the subtle employment of menacing strings and Amos' alternately whispery spoken-word and siren-like vocals draws focus to the horrific lyrics better than Eminem's casually delivered original ever did. While this sort of melodrama occasionally works well, Amos' theatrical interpretations can give Girls a soporific quality; slowing down 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," for example, renders it more sleep-inducing than illuminating. But Girls is otherwise full of transformations that do work, like Amos' version of Lloyd Cole and the Commotions' "Rattlesnakes," which, in its new rendering, reveals layers of meaning previously unimagined. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2001 18:09:35 EDT From: BeIlsforHer@aol.com Subject: To each his/her own, to each his/her own... Regardless to if you enjoy the album or not, one must admit that this was a totally innovative idea. To my knowledge, no one has ever taken songs, past and present, and done them over with the confidence and precision that Tori has done on SLG. And I assume, because she picked these songs herself, that there is some strong/significant meaning/message behind them to her. And with that thought, one should respect this album, along with all albums by all artists.
