Just so no one bites me, I was once that fool too! Just a note: I intend to buy all 4 covers of SLG eventually (I'll probably buy one on the day of release, and the other 3 used at a fraction of the cost)...but not because I think they'll be worth anything. I just want to have all of them. I'm a bizarre completionist that way. I don't buy her stuff for the future value, I dont' think most people do. Granted, I'd snatch up an authentic copy of YKTR if I found it. . .but for the novelty of it. I'm not saying that Tori and her management aren't trying to market imports and different covers of her stuff for the purpose of fans like me who will put more money in their pocket... but I think most fans are aware of that. 'Choirgirl Hotel' moved too far from the piano for some, and the >> ballads seemed sentimental mockeries of earlier piano-based pieces . . . > >That's interesting to me, I never heard anyone mention that before. Are >there specific songs you could name, Karen (or anyone else)? Among my Tori fan friends, 'Jackie's Strength' and 'Northern Lad' were the ones that drew that fire. It's always difficult for me to figure out whether reactions are due to a song itself or to its place in the overall album ... or expectations of what a new album will sound like... and so on. Perhaps being surrounded by songs with fuller band arrangements made those two seem pale to some ... maybe a favourite LE song nestled nestled between 'Raspberry Swirl' and 'iieee' would look odd too! But on mix tapes, out of context, those two songs fall between what I loved of earlier ballads and what I love about Choirgirl. Also down here we tend to dislike anything to do with America's infatuation with Jacqueline Onassis so there are plenty of silly things which get in the way of embracing a song, as well as musical :) >I'm still not sure how I feel about the live Venus disc, but until Venus >came out I loved Pele the most of any of the albums, and now I have to say >my feelings are tied between it and the Venus studio disc. That's an interesting combination - Pele and Venus - I wonder which pairings are most common. I'm currently a Pele and Choirgirl type, they satisfy very different emotional states. The journey towards loving Pele took me through regions similar to those mapped in the Choirgirl booklet - the transformation of dislikes can be rather interesting :). My flatmate is an Earthquakes girl who loves Venus because (after enough time passed?) she doesn't resent that side of Tori anymore, just hopes Tori will now and then return to the piano. >> . . . 'To venus and back' had a live album which paled next to many >> people's favourite bootlegs, and a studio album that others saw as the >> product of a rush. >It's starkly moving to me with lots of direct, heartfelt emotion, and there's an >overall roundedness to the production which also adds to the sense of >cohesiveness. I doubt most of those who say it was rushed would have said >that if they hadn't been prejudiced by hearing the story of its recording. Thanks for pointing that out, it's such a lazy argument and I've used it before - explaining dislike by the recording process, rather than what is in the music itself that I'm not so fond of :) I still wonder if the arrangements of some songs would have ultimately differed had Tori lived with them longer - for example some friends and I love the solo piano takes, live band versions and single arrangement of 'Concertina' more than the 'tinny' album one. But we'll never know, and that question could be asked of any album. And answered partially by the new guises for songs that Tori comes up with live - there aren't many cobwebs in her musical world. >> I was also struck to learn how much '1000 Oceans' was liked by Tori's father and husband. >> Such a boring song to me! > >I honestly can't fathom why some people feel this way. I find it an >unusually direct song with naked emotion dripping from it so much it's >shocking. ... [not necessarily talking about 1000 Oceans] ...It's so hard to untangle how when one person can see in a song simplicity, another finds simpleness, one feels purity, another hears conformity with pop norms, one enjoys the honest directness, the other finds there to be unimaginative directness, one listener soars with the string arrangement, the other cringes at the yrup - and even among people who love most of Tori's music, we can diverge so much. Isn't response to music peculiar?! We would all need to outline our personal and music-listening histories in depth before we could predict who will like which Tori songs, and why. But even then ... not being able to explain how the magic of a particular song works to an outsider is maybe a function of that magic, of that mystique ... music beyond us and yet part of us. I love all the albums, but hate her mass marketing by sending different singles, covers, and versions of her albums but having her fans rabidly purchase them like fools thinking they will be worth something in the furture. >> Uhhh... ahhhh... ummmm... sooo unsure what to make of someone calling me and my collector friends fools. Of course you are entitled to your opinion, However, I certainly disagree. With few exceptions the majority of things Tori are very collectible and increase in value over time. Some exceptions would be the 3 forms of the 5 US album releases which commonly sell for $3.00-$8.00 on eBay. The UK releases of the same 5 typically hold their original sale price and the 5 from other countries (Japan, Australia, Canada) can go for 3 times the original sale price. Where you have a US Winter single that can go for a buck or two, you have a much more rare Australian Winter that can go for fifty bucks. As for mixes - I've seen them do eh, OK in value. My favorite all mix release is Jackie's Strength/Father Lucifer. I love that CD. Yup, I said LOVE. It makes me feel good inside. That's the other part of collecting Tori - having the music to enjoy. It's not just about numbers & money - it's about having & enjoying the many musical sides of an artist we Tori collectors love so much. I'll close with this - I do not, at this time, collect boots. However I would never ever call boot collectors fools. They enjoy what they collect as I enjoy collecting what I do. Each to their own. THAT is where the value is - to the beholder. Just because you don't do it doesn't make it null & void to all. Respect goes a long way. Live & let live yes? Please, next time you think of making a blanket statement calling a group of people fools think about it first. If you thought you were foolish to collect then that's about you, not anyone else. Taking my foolish rabid butt back to eBay now Toodles ~ MysT (hehe :-) *Anyone in the know about my collection think I'm a fool? Anyone? Anyone? LOL :-) **FYI: Record companies release a zillion music forms for artists. Take a look on eBay for Madonna (5000+ items), Mariah Carey (1200+) or KISS (6000+). It's common practice, not just to Tori. *** In a message dated 7/28/01 10:29:42 PM Pacific Daylight Time, "Jaxson Jackson" writes: << Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2001 10:33:55 -0500 From: "Jaxson Jackson" Subject: Re: dislike of tori music Nicely said Karen, thanks for the most thoughtful letter to everyone.
