Atlantic released the "Crucify" 7" (along with the other releases on the usual formats), stating on the label of the disc that the song included as the b-side to Crucify was called "Here. In My Hand", as opposed to "Here. In My Head". Atlantic quickly realized the misprint and corrected it for the following pressings. The disc is now a collector's item and is not very easy to come by. As a longtime Toriphile now (God, time goes so fast!) I can surely say that "Girl" has always been one of my favorite songs. Why? Well, I think it embodies one of the main themes dealt with on the LE album, namely the submission to a "higher" one (and by that I don't necessarily mean God, but rather well, some kind of authority, whether it be your boss at work, your friends at school or your own family perhaps) and the subsequent supression of the self (inflicted on you by yourself), in virtue of whatever commandments it might be that this "higher" entity proclaims. That's what the "male" voice on the song represents. Tori mentions "the shadow" at the beginning of the song to reflect how this "girl" has only been able to find her place in life behind it (the shadow)... she crawls out and then crawls back in. But then again, maybe "one day she'll be her own". There might be hundreds of different interpretation, depending on anyone's personal experience. But I think the message is a distinctive one. And might I just add that I love this song because of how beautiful Tori's voice sounds in it? My favorite is the version on "Venus", though. I've always thought almost every song (every single one?) on my LE album sounds rather ... opaque. It's gotta a problem of the album, coz the "album version" of "Crucify" on my Crucify UK single sounds pretty damn clear. I guess. God! am I hungry! Gotta grab something to eat folks, thanks for listening! I never really knew one Tori song that fans were split on (except maybe cornflake girl). Funny, reading this post made me remember when I first got LE waaay back when it was new. I devoured Crucify, then felt a slump, then devoured SATY and PT, etc... It took me a few listens to really bring Girl into my heart, but that was because I was listening without knowing the lyrics. When i finally read all the lyrics, I remember bawling. The song came alive for me from then on because I can relate so well.. i related well at the time and still today - "sit in the chair and be good now." - that line still gives me chills. So, for me, it's more a lyrical attraction. The music never stood out to me like some of the other songs on that album, but, because i see the lyrics as a comforting blanket, I enjoy the music that accompanies them. That's my "girl" story. :-) Take care all, Angela~ - -- *Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched and those who have tried, for only they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.* - unknown ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V6 #66 ************************************
