"So what if I'm a mermaid in these jeans of his with her name still on it..." I've always thought of this line as being a reference to The Little Mermaid, who gave up her voice to have legs and be with the guy she loved. Being in jeans means she gave up her fish parts - it's an obvious Little Mermaid reference. But then Tori says another girl's name is still on the jeans, so this could mean the guy still has a thing for some Other girl. And she says, "sometimes I hear my voice" - although she gave it up to get what she thinks she wants. Tori has said the song is about finding your voice [not literally, of course], and I think the Little Mermaid allusion is beautiful and fits perfectly with the theme. j'ason t o r i p h o r i a members.aol.com/yessaid/index.htm ~~ In a message dated 3/25/2001 1:15:09 PM Eastern Standard Time, copperbeech@nc.rr.com writes: << "So what if I'm a mermaid in these jeans of his with her name still on it" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 23:07:12 EST From: Mysterilady2001@cs.com Subject: Tori Trivia 2 ~ ANSWER Hi ya EWF ~ Sorry it took so long to post - been busy. OK, on with the answer. The question was this ~ Where does Tori say she got the name Tori? Lemme tell you I got LOTS of responses. A couple responses are rumor and we couldn't verify them. If someone can, of course I'm happy to post it as being fact. There was the one factual source I initially had in mind when I posted the trivia & I did get a second source verified that has a completely different story attached. I'll first list my source since it is oldest, then I'll list the second. Here we go! ~~ Where does Tori say she got the name Tori? According to the 1988 Y KANT TORI READ press release from Atlantic Records: (I own this actual press release, contact me personally for a scan.) "Her real name is not even Tori. She (Tori) elaborates: "Tori came from 'notorious' for wearing red leather pants to my father's church on Sundays and directing the children's choir." * The second direct quote from Tori about her name's origin comes from Tori's November '98 Sessions at West 54 performance/interview: (The quote was taken directly from their website, link below.) http://www.sessionsatwest54th.com/artists/amos02/transcript.html "David Byrne: Do you think when you changed your name or took what in the old days was called a stage name, do you think that was a way of self-determination? Of saying, "I'm going to be reborn as this new person?" Tori Amos: Well, I think it's also correcting a serious mistake my mother made. I'm screaming from the womb, "No, Mother, Myra Ellen? That's like the worst!" I hated that name. Especially with what boys can do as nine-year-olds with the word "Myra," on the east coast. Oh, and their accents are horrible anyway. But Myra! It was just the worst. And everybody called me Ellen instead, but Eh-wen, they dropped the "ll"s? And I gotta tell you, I wanted to torch them. And so, I went through some really bad names, when I was going through my name change period. I almost became Sammi Jay. David Byrne: That's not so bad. Tori Amos: Thanks, 'cause I was watching Dallas or no, Dynasty? David Byrne: I didn't know that was one of the characters. Tori Amos: Yeah, Sammi Jay. She was Heather Locklear's character. Anyway, I was getting into the whole Sammi Jay thing and thank God one of my friend's boyfriends said, "You're a Tori," and I went, "You know what? You're right." * So, there ya have it EWF ~ We have 2 direct quotes. Interesting huh :-) Tori Trivia Toodles ~ MysT *** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 20:27:57 EST From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: Re: Crucify and God In a message dated 3/24/01 1:44:32 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: > Funny ... I've never thought of Crucify as being particularly "religious > themed". God would have been more appropriate for a poll like this (or > Icicle, but there's no video so that wouldn't do VH1 any good). I would say either one would have been good. "God" is a little of a potshot at the patriarchy and dogmatism of the Christian church, while "Crucify" has to do more with a struggle with spirituality, and primarily, a struggle with the Christian church. I'm going to make some statements here that are merely my opinions. If someone takes offense and wishes to argue with me on it, please e-mail me privately, but be warned that you're not going to change my mine, so why waste your time? This is my warning. If you are particularly sensitive about your religion, then please do not continue reading. "I've been looking for a savior...dirty streets...looking for a savior...dirty sheets" = It's like she's become dependent on someone else saving her, and not taking responsibility for herself. An idea that seems to be promoted by Christianity. "I've been raising up my hands, drive another nail in" = It's like she's been doing exactly what she has been told to do, and it's not working for her. She's been submissive, taking the blows as they come, and she keeps letting it all drive nails into her, because she knows she's gotta have her suffering so that she can get her cross. :) But, now she's trowing her hands up in the air because she's tired of it all. She's been trying, and trying, and to no avail. This just isn't working for her. And it works well with the next line: "Just what God needs, one more victim" = She's thinking to herself, why does God want so many victims? They've got to stop being victims, and stop the nails from being driven in. They have take responsibility for themselves, and not depend on a savior. At least, this seems to be her opinion, and I must say I agree with it. "Why do we crucify ourselves? Every day I crucify myself, Nothing I do is good enough for you" = She's tired of everyone being victims, and suffering, all because they seem to be following this one religion blindly that teaches them that they must suffer, and be meek, in order to reach salvation. And it seems she is wondering why the way she is without the suffering isn't good enough for the Christian idea of God, perhaps? "I know a cat named Easter he says will you ever learn you're just an empty cage girl if you kill the bird" = I think Jesus is the "cool cat" named Easter that's telling her that she shouldn't kill off her spirituality, because then she would only be a husk of a person, a shell. There's no fancy feathered bird singing, just a cold, hard cage. So, it seems to me that she's almost had a conversation with him, like she was having a hard time coming to terms with Christianity, and may have even considered atheism, but maybe Jesus is saying she doesn't have to be Christian, but she should at least keep the bird alive. "I've got enough guilt to start my own religion" = One of the themes I have noticed about the Christian church (especially in Catholicism), is this promotion of excessive guilt. People feel guilty for the smallest things, like maybe they felt a touch of lust for a beautiful person who sat down beside them, or something silly like that. Something that is just natural for humans to do. Yeah, so that was all the lines with the obviously religious terms. If you care to read mroe deeply into the other lines, I think you can find some religious innuendos there. So, I think "Crucify" has a definite religious theme to it, just as "God" has. I need suggestions. Mainly, I'm in the mood for music with female vocalists. I'm just going to give a list of what I like, so that maybe everyone will get an idea of what I do like, and perhaps could help me out with my search. My absolute favorite is Tori Amos, of course. Others are Poe, Sister Soleil, Snake River Conspiracy, Garbage, No Doubt, Fiona Apple, Sarah McLachlan, Ani DiFranco, Skunk Anansie, Kittie, Joydrop, Jewel (some of her stuff), Loreena McKennitt, Pet, The Cardigans (their second album), Portishead, Alanis Morissette, Sarah Brightman (her latest album), The Cranberries, Elastica, Rasputina, Switchblade Symphony, Mono, Dido, Nelly Furtado, Hole, Natalie Imbruglia, Leona Naess, October Project, and last but not least, Bjork. Any recommendations? I'm really trying to stay away from nice, folksy girls. I want stuff that is more realistic. Some people have recommended PJ Harvey and Liz Phair, who are not these nice folksy girls that I am talking about, but I'm not in the mood for their stuff, either, for some reason. I wasn't really impressed with Luscious Jackson, either, for some reason. There are a few bands in that what I have heard from them, have intrigued me. Such as Genitorturers, Missing Persons, An Pierle, Saint Etienne, Peck Slip, Lotus, Jute, EMF, Claire Voyant, Posh, Imogen Heap, Amanda Ghost, Kenickie, Moloko, Towering Inferno, Dubstar, Hexedene, Ruby, Beth Orton, Curve, Sheila Chandra, Republica, Windscale, Lydia Lunch, The Creatures, Sophya...does anyone have any opinions on any of these bands/singers? Anything else they'd like to reccommend? Some of them are quite obscure, and I have been having problems finding them. Can anyone help me out? And then there are electronic/techno/trip-hop/industrial musicians who use often use female vocalists, such as Delerium, Massive Attack, Robert Miles, BT, Chicane, Die Form, Rhea's Obsession, Juno Reactor, and Hybrid...can anyone suggest any more? Have any comments? I think that's it...if I think of any more, I will certainly bother you guys again. :) Black Dove ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V6 #56 ************************************
