Most of the time, the song is already written before entering the studio, but that's usually just lyrics and melody. The rest is usually a collaboration between the writer, band, and producer. Things like Sarah McLachlan's producer Pierre Marchand and her work are the ideal situation. Where she writes most of the material, her band organizes most of the arrangement, but he only oversees and gives input, etc... In the case of Madonna's Ray of Light where William Orbit was "producing," it was a TOTAL collaboration. Orbit CREATED all of the beats and most of the music, I would bet, and Madonna wrote the lyrics and/or melody. In this case, yes, the producer is at least A writer. With Tori, she does all the everything, so...ya know. She doesn't count. Because she's god. So she's partly right. In some situations. Matthew be my singing lesson. be my song. when I tell you I'm falling you tell me I'm strong. For those of you who don't know (and a reminder for those of you who do), Nadyne and I will be running a tree for the Denver CO (10/11/99) show - the last American show on the To Dallas And Back tour. NOTE: Please do NOT contact us about this tree yet. We will be sending out more information regarding signups, etc. after the new year. Anyone contacting us asking to be put on the tree, or info about the tree will be removed from the tree in the future. I've done a bit more work on getting the show ready and in hopes of getting everything running extremely smoothly, I've put up a brief web page regarding what exactly is going on with the Denver show and tree. At this point, I'd like to put out a call for artists for the Denver show. I'm making available hi-res scans of pictures from both the pre-show M&G and the show itself. Thumbnails of these pics are available from the web page (listed below). We will begin accepting cover submissions on Jan. 3, 2000. That gives you approx 3 weeks to get started on your design. Guidelines are posted on the web page. http://take3.dreamhost.com/tree/denver/ Again, please do not contact us about signing up for the tree. We are simply providing a means to have the artwork done when the tree starts. Thanks, Keith S. http://take3.dreamhost.com/ ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #365 *************************************
