His theory was >that the planet Venus was formed and began travelling through this chaotic >orbit, colliding into other planets along the way, and then when it was done >it returned back to its original spot- and began orbiting regularly w/ no >more collisions. Anyway he wrote a few things on this that turned out to be >unpopular amongst the astronomy folk. it was Immanuel Velikovsky. he has a theory that the planet venus actually started as a sort of comet, and had a couple near-collisions with the earth in historic times, said near-collisions being responsible for such stories as the biblical cataclysms, etc, and that venus finally settled down into its present orbit. his theories are just that, theories, he really only has circumstantial evidence, as far as i know. i haven't read much of his work, just about him. on the other hand, in the 1940s he predicted that venus would have an exceptionally high surface temperature, and that this temperature was due to the planet being shrouded in a thick cloud of gaseous hydrocarbons. in the 1940s astronomical consensus was that venus would have a low surface temp. and that the clouds contained no hydrocarbons. then in the 1960s with the american and russian space probes, it turns out that venus' atmosphere is laden with hydrocarbons and the temperature is around 600 degrees F. he points to things like venus' high temp, and its odd rotation, etc., as proof that venus is not part of the original solar system, but a planet that was very recently (like in the last 10000 years or so) captured by the sun's gravity. whether or not he's right, i don't know. but he's not totally a crank, judging by the predictions above. Carl Sagan didn't like him and constantly called him a bad scientist, but Sagan himself was a terrible astronomer. Velikovsky's major work is called _Worlds in Collision_, published in 1950 and rereleased many times since then. it may still be in print, but can be found in any used bookstore, in paperback (that's where i got mine, though i've never managed to get all the way through it). Robert Anton Wilson details the Velikovsky/Sagan debate in _Cosmic Trigger Vol 3_, pages 193-199, in case you're interested. deadfong ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 12:39:02 EST From: JayMGee@aol.com Subject: screen saver Hey guys, does anyone know of any Tori Amos Screen Savers out there? Here you are. [See below] Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. _____________________________________________________________________ http://www.jmdl.com/lyrics/acaseofyou.htm A Case of You by Joni Mitchell ________________________________________ Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar" On the back of a cartoon coaster In the blue TV screen light I drew a map of Canada Oh Canada With your face sketched on it twice Oh you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you darling Still I'd be on my feet oh I would still be on my feet Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints I'm frightened by the devil And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid I remember that time you told me you said "Love is touching souls" Surely you touched mine 'Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you darling And I would still be on my feet I would still be on my feet I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said "Go to him, stay with him if you can But be prepared to bleed" Oh but you are in my blood You're my holy wine You're so bitter, bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you darling Still I'd be on my feet I would still be on my feet __________________________ Copyright (c) 1970; Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 16:57:10 EST From: Spiritcc33@aol.com Subject: Re: Anyone got KROQ ticket? does ne one have extra tickets for me as well??? or do you know where or how to get them/??? thanx Bliss&Hugs Carrie* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 11:39:08 -0400 (AST) From: Shannon McNeil Subject: Tori saying that producers are the "real artists" I'm pasting an excerpt from "Tori News" about how she says that nowadays, producers are the true artists, which I don't really believe is totally true. I totally agree with her statement regarding how the music industry is in fact not about music anymore. I don't necessarily agree with her when she says that producers are the real artists; I think they make a good song a better song, but I believe the real artists are the people who write the lyrics. I'm somewhat biased I suppose, because I am a total lyrics person... if the song does not have good lyrics, I won't like it, no matter how well produced it is. I think production compliments a song, I don't believe it makes it.
