This may be old news to people, but on Nov. 18 at 7 pm there will be a live webcast w/ Tori and Ana Voog on www.toriamosdirect.com . (I know details are there; I guess the webcast is too!) Also, a friend of mine at work was reading "The Advocate" and the cover story is about cool women. Tori was in there with a cute picture; I don't remember what number she was. (I think they were ranked...it was cool to see her there although I didn't know Madeline Albright was also considered a woman that gay men love...I just hadn't localized her that way, although I could be wrong!) Anyway, check out the webcast and the magazine for your temporary Tori fix! It's a 2-CD set. The first CD is UtP, the second is "More Pink", a collection of bee-sides. Getting your hands on MP is increasingly difficult. Several copies made it over to this side of the pond, but that supply is drying up (or, perhaps, has already dried up). Your best bet these days is to find an online store in Australia {such as , they've had it in the past}. "Even More Pink" is a bootleg that was put together by a friend of mine (wow, Koert, you're infamous!). It includes all the tracks on MP, and adds the SATY ltd ed and CfG ltd ed bee-sides. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 12:39:47 EST From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: Re: precious-things-digest V4 #343 In a message dated 11/17/99 1:40:11 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-precious-things-digest@smoe.org writes: << they didn't tell the story of the uncooked chicken though. >> Is it true that the reason why Tori and Trent had a falling out was because of an uncooked chicken dinner? I'm glad Richard addressed the question of "Strange Fruit", and with such well-researched documentation! I was fairly certain that Ella Fitzgerald was not the original singer of "Strange Fruit", if she ever performed it at all. I'm not an expert by any means, and I don't have either one's complete catalog, but I do have a good number of songs by both amazing women, and have never heard Ella do "Strange Fruit." "Strange Fruit" is partially responsible for my interest in Billie Holiday's music, actually. The version I first heard was by Siouxsie and the Banshees on their album of covers, 'Through the Looking Glass'. They add in some horns that remind me of a New Orleans-type funeral procession. I love the whole album, but one of the annoying things to me was that they don't say who originally performed the songs they're covering - they list who the music was written by, but that's not always the same person(s) who performed it. Anyway, I still love their version - definitely disturbing. When I found out that Billie Holiday had originally performed it, I had to hear it, and then I became interested in hearing more of her music. I also enjoy Tori's version of "Strange Fruit." All three versions are very different, and appealing in different ways. The words, of course, make me feel vaguely uncomfortable for being white - very powerful images. Still, a great song. I'd actually heard a different version of how it was written, but I'm sure it's not true, since Richard quoted several sources that all agreed. I had heard that Billie had seen the results of a lynching, and described her horror to someone, who then wrote the words. An apocryphal story, it appears. Your friend the NIN freak isn't that much of a historian, apparently. :) Tori and Trent did not go to the same high school. They never dated. Tori sent him a copy of LE, he listened to it some time later, and they became friends after that. The chicken dinner story has some basis in reality, at least. Tori tried to make fried chicken for Trent whilst he was recording (dammit, I can't remember where, someone died in the house), and the chicken would not cook. Tori called her mom, who told her the house was haunted and that's why the chicken wouldn't cook. Always check for multiple sources and try to get to the bottom of any story you might deem to be worth repeating as gospel. Always question; never accept stories blindly, you may be spreading false rumors unwittingly. Sometimes people can be hurt by the spread of such rumors. That stinks. I watch that show fairly frequently, and Jon Stewart is sort of a dork, but not in a bad way, it's just his thing. The typical Daily Show interview is a quick bantering session that may or may not involve some friendly insults, the sort you might share with friends. Tori is NOT a banter candidate. I knew when I heard of it that it wouldn't be a good forum for her. Comedy Central seems to be geared toward the single-male-living-with-other-single-males-drinking-beer-semi-hygienic-likin g-large-breasts-and foul-language-demographic (wassup with The Man Show? How does that get airtime?). She takes so long to answer questions, and never really answers them in a direct fashion, she always sort of wanders around the bush a bit first and can be so obscure. It was great on Charlie Rose, but not the thing for the Daily Show. Anyway, he said he had 'ass sweat' from trying to talk to her, and I was laughing when he asked her if she drank beer and she was like 'no' and at that point you could really tell that he didn't relate to her at all, but that he felt like a rube (the wine talk). I just wish they still did 5 Questions, I'd have loved to see Tori try to do that. I used to think how great it'd be if they had her on, but it's not the same w/o 5Q. Anyway, I really don't think he was being disrespectful, he made the best of it, but she was not the guest for him. And she seemed less 'tolerant' than absent to me, it was kind of a surreal interview, and I felt a bit sorry for him because it was so obvious they were not on the same wavelength and he was struggling. Try to remember that she can be a bit much for some to comprehend. I mean, why was she pouring her water on the floor? The ass sweat thing? Even I was confused there. And I will freely admit that there were parts of that chat with Ana Voog where I was like.....wtf is she talking about? She's not *even* answering the question she was asked. That's our Tori, but she's not for everyone. This whole 'make her mainstream' thing is laughable. Don't blame Jon Stewart that he got stuck with her. Poor sap, he was doomed. *myth* ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #344 *************************************
