Uhm... hmm... maybe it was different in some parts, but she was the guest for the first half on my MTV... :) I taped it.. and only watched bits and peices (I was watching a movie at the time, so watched part during commercials) and she was indeed in the first half.. As for somebody saying "Is she goingto tour again?" I doubt it... 120 minutes was probably taped before the tour was over. Both of mine include FBR and Twinkle. The FBR and Twinkle, the live bee-sides, are from the Santa Barbara show, 20 September 1998. And I'm sure this has already been said, but Baker Baker and Winter from the other 80s single (as well as the US 1000 Oceans single) are from 23 November 1998. I -adore- this version of FBR. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Nov 1999 22:28:14 -0600 From: "mr zebra" Subject: Re: tori/courtney? > hey has anyone else heard anything about the tori and courtney love project? Hello, Thank you, everyone, for your Flying Dutchman help. It's a very interesting story, and I'm glad I know now. :o) Incidentally, Matthew, the restaurant on the Simpsons was the FRYING Dutchman, with an R. I don't know if you caught that. That's just how clever the Simpsons are. And to clarify. I *know* Strange Fruit was sung by Billie Holiday (although I didn't know it was sung by Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald). I may be seventeen, but I'm not *that* culturally illiterate. :o) I also know that it's about lynchings in the South. I figured that one out all on my own. What I meant by my question is: Is anyone else as DEEPLY frightened by it as I am? I seriously won't listen to it when I'm alone in my house. It just scares me. I want to know if I'm alone in feeling this. Once again, you guys have proved very helpful when I have a question. :o) Thanks! Beth did not say in her post that Ms. Holiday was the original person to have released a recording of it, but I have to question the idea that Ella Fitzgerald was, Josh. Although likely out of the purview of this list, I'm curious to see anything you could provide by way of backing up your assertion. Private mail would be fine. Thanks. Here's more background on this song. Although its composer was Lewis Allen, a k a Abel Meeropol, Billie Holiday was so closely associated with this song that she came to be mistakenly thought by many people to have composed it. (I've seen his last name spelled Allan, but the spelling Allan seems to hail from an early record label typo.) He originally wrote the words as a poem. Billie Holiday would sing it as the final song in her set whenever she performed it live, and she would never return to the stage after singing it. http://www.eye.net/eye/issue/issue_12.04.97/music/oldschool.html Commodore's fruits BY LOU FORD I'd like to think there are still some people who find Billie Holiday's recording of "Strange Fruit" as brutal and affecting as when she recorded it 58 years ago. Five months before the beginning of the Second World War, it was still possible to be leftist in America, if by leftist we mean openly concerned with racial equality and social welfare. Abel Meeropol, a.k.a. Lewis Allen, was an American leftist who frequented the New York nightclub Cafe Society, where Holiday was the featured act. He presented Holiday with a song he had written about the peculiar Southern custom of lynching. Like most musicians, Holiday was essentially apolitical, and at first refused it. Later she reconsidered and brought the song to her record company, Columbia, who promptly turned it down. Holiday was quickly approached by Milt Gabler, owner of 42nd Street's Commodore record store, who offered to negotiate with Columbia on her behalf to record the song for his own fledgling label. On April 20, 1939, Holiday recorded "Strange Fruit" and Gabler's Commodore Records had its first major success -- if you consider notoriety based on scandal to betoken success. (In America, it does.) Released again on Billie Holiday: The Complete Commodore Recordings (MCA/Universal), "Strange Fruit" is the first track we hear on this two-disc set. Allen's lyrics are remarkably layered. Most singers would be unable to bring that out, but this is where Holiday was unique. "Black bodies swinging/ In the Southern breeze" would be simple reportage if Holiday hadn't taken "swinging" and isolated it, delivering it as she had a million times before in jauntier settings. For a moment, the listener reacts in the way they're accustomed to hearing Holiday "swing," and a pang of guilt is the reward for mentally conjuring up a lascivious late-night speakeasy instead of the grim tableau the next line hammers home. The rest of the two discs are the Billie most jazz fans remember without wincing. Of course, every tune is followed by at least one alternate take -- a practice that drags the listener through the disc with a tiring stutter. [...] ______________________________________________________________________ http://music.excite.com/artist/biography/33213 [...] Early in 1939, Holiday's career took a giant step upwards. Again Hammond proffered a helping hand, as did Barney Josephson who dreamed of running a racially integrated nightclub in New York's Greenwich Village. Hammond was the one who invested in the project and, asked to advise on appropriate attractions for liberal patrons, recommended Holiday. She opened at Cafe Society with Frankie Newton's band that January and had her first taste of stardom at the Cafe whose slogan read 'The wrong place for the right people'. Holiday stayed there for nearly nine months, during which time she was given a song-poem, 'Strange Fruit', Lewis Allen's anti-lynching protest, which led her to a real hit record and new and international fame as a purveyor of socially significant ballads. The song continued to be identified with Holiday who, on 20 April 1939, made a record of this controversial title for the Commodore label, her own having refused to release it. Opinion divided sharply on the merits of 'Strange Fruit' as a jazz vehicle, and the effect it had upon her instinctive taste and artistry. Critics feared it could lead to a self-consciousness which would destroy the strangely innocent qualities of earlier days. [...] There is a 41-second clip of Ms. Holiday singing this song. Go to-- http://www.gibbs-smith.com/books/billie.html I think Tori had a lot of guts to have released her own recording of this song, which was *so* closely associated with Billie Holiday and has such a large cultural background to it. It almost invites the listener to say, "Tori Amos is no Billie Holiday." I was really shocked when I heard Tori was releasing it on a single.
