Tori Amos lines up solo Albert Hall date Tori Amos will play her only European show at the Royal Albert Hall in London on October 29. The million-selling singer-songwriter will be performing songs from her new album - To Venus and Back, which mixes new material with past hits - alone on stage in the cavernous hall. Tickets for the show start at £15.50 and are available from the RFH Box Office on 0171 960 4242, or via the usual ticket agencies. Amos will also release the first single from the album, the defiantly-titled Glory of the 80s, on November 1. The track is described as an 'affectionate' look back at her early career as a gigging musician. Presumably it will be full of references to all-night booze ups, blow jobs behind the Marshall amps and untrammeled bitchiness about some of the stars she worked with. That would indeed be glorious... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Oct 1999 04:04:50 EDT From: Pixieqwien@aol.com Subject: Re: Tori pregnant? This to my knowledge is a false statement. This is how I see it now: The opener, the whole "story" starts with a single thought: "you always felt like suede" and this prompts her (whoever "her" is in this song) to explore why this person feels like suede to her. Suede=irresistible. Or maybe she is quoting someone who said that to her and the song is an analysis of her response. Then she launches into an elaboration of "you said you are a sun now with your very own satellite": Venus is the star--we know that Venus is not really a star as the sun is a star, but it is very bright in the sky like a star is. And the narrator is a moon of Venus. Venus seems to be more of a place or state of being, but it could be a person also. I like the witch references for the whole "conjure anything by the dark of the moon", and it also suggests to me that the dark of the moon is when the moon "turns her back" and is not shing moon light on Venus. And Venus (or a 3rd person, if Venus is a state of mind) gets away with who knows what while the moons back is turned. I already mentioned (in a frantic message from the hospital where I do my internship--there was a line to use the computer and they were VERY antsy) about the absorption lines and about how stars (or planets) can swallow a satellite whole if the gravity gets screwed up and the moon crashes into the surface. Well, it doesn't crash if it is actually a star, it really does get absorbed. If I remember my astronomy correctly, that is. The whole "jets revving" is very interesting as well, because I have always been interested in ether since Organic Chemistry class. Ether is very dangerous because it is invisible and very volatile and poisonous. And it is heavier than air so it is a gas that can be "poured". It travels along the ground and we heard many horror stories about places blowing up--guess they didn't want us experimenting with it! I know that ether was also considered to be OUTER SPACE in ancient times--before they discovered diethyl ether (which is what I described above). So it seems that this little moon is revving up to meet Venus to get swallowed! Self destructive little moon! Cant blame the moon, Venus is so beautiful. And the "oh little sister" is Venus talking to the moon. "You are destroyed now that you are a part of me and you are sad, but you will forgive me one day" There are so many scientific words and concepts thoughout this album! It is very exciting for a scientific girl such as myself! Comments welcome!!! [1] The drums weren't as good as the regular version, or even from Sessions. Not the standard CALS beat, which I LOVE. [2] She completely changed it again. Started out chanting "Father...something...Lucy-far...something" over and over with the piano. She kept doing that throughout the song. It was very different, but still very good. I prefer the Plugged version. [3] I recognized the drum beat IMMEDIATELY and FREAKED and no one else knew what it was. LOL. That's what you get when the CD's only been out for a week. :-) But it was a little different. She didn't sing the chorus as clearly as the album (the tempo was changed up or something), which I would have liked. And she kinda extended it too. [4] acapella intro, then drum intro, THEN the guitar that everyone recognized. [5] Halfway through the song, some chicks gave us their row F tickets because we were the only ones standing up on the lawn. So we went down. IT WAS SOOOO COOL. Like 6 rows from the front for the rest of the show. WOW. [6] OMG. I almost died. When I heard those first chords. *SWOON* Jupiter is my best friend's Tori-name, and all I could think of was him throughout the whole song. And if you knew anything about us you would know how much that is. LOL. [7] I have a new respect for this song now. I always thought of it as the little nonsense song at the end of Pele, but it was AMAZING last night. Extended and emotional and AWESOME. [8] Started out with a drum beat, then the Kurz notes, which I knew I had hear somewhere, but it took a few bars for me to recognize. LOL. I was going through all the songs in my head... *thinking* no. *thinking* nope. *thinking* OH YEAH. WOOHOO. LOL. [9] Like 15 MINUTES!!!! AWESOME. I was SOOO jamming. Remember how someone posted about the ppl dancing strangely next to them. Well, that was me. LOL. That's what I do. Dancing. The arm/hand movements. That's me. [10] The standard kickass pumped Precious Things. Make me CUM. Nine Inch Nails.... [11] HOLY LORD WOW. When I first heard those banging chords on the piano I was amazed. And Matt Chamberlain. WOW. I have never heard drums that loud before. Even louder than Waitress!!! Somehow he hit them REALLY hard on a few beats of every verse and it was just amazing. And of course everyone yelled Cock really loud at the end. LOL. That was fun. [12] Once again, I almost died!!! The first song that I really loved by Tori. Mr Zebra got me INTO her, but I loved Winter before by itself. She did this one in New Orleans last year too. I was happy. [13] Caton's guitar wasn't playing right for the first 2/3 of the song, so the sound guy was all up there on him trying to get it to work for the longest time while the rest of the band was playing, so he was just casually drinking his wine/water/watever he had. LOL. Then they finally got it playing at the beginning of the last verse and it was good. [14] After Caton's little guitar episode, Tori said something about how sometimes things just fuck up. Then she went into this 3 minute compete improv singing "sometimes things just fuck up" and all kinds of crazy stuff. It was SOOOOOOOO fun. I HAVE to get a copy of this show. [15] I had only heard Angie like once or twice before, so I didn't know what it was until she actually said "Angie." I was hoping for Cooling or Here for the ending of the show, but Angie was absolutely beautiful. So now I have to go buy the Crucify EP. :-) I've been meaning to anyway... Datura is an ANTICHOLINERGIC hallucinogen(mandrake, deadly nightshade, aka atropine, henbane , and datura) & ayahuasca is and DEROTONERGIC HALLUCINOGEN : LSD (psilocybin & psilocin, morning glory seeds, bufotenine, dmt, harmaline, myristicin & elemicin). toodles & forgive the most likely presence of many typos, ellen "ANTICHOLINERGIC HALLUCINOGENS" Muscarine b/c it directly stimulates A Ch receptors, & physostigmine b/c it enhances A Ch activity through enzyme inhibition, are both A CH agonists that produce hallucination. THis next class of agents do the opposite-they produce hallucinations throught he antagonism of A CH receptors. The anticholinergic hallucinogens cause many of their effect by blocking muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the brain. THere are of three importance: hyoscycmine, atropine, and scopolamine. Chemically, hysoscyamine is l-hyoscyamine. Atropine is dl-hyoscyamine. And scopolamine is l-hyoscine. These three substances are found widely distributed in nature in four genuses of Solanaceae, the potato family : DATURA, Atropa, Hyoscyamus, and Madragora. Many hallucinogenic Datura species are found worldwide, the other 3 genuses are mostly indigenous to Europe. SInce these drugs block cholinergic receptors it is to be expected that they induce many symtoms of the anticholinergic syndrome. Rapidly absorbed through the GI trat and through mucous membranes, they block the secretion of many body fluids. They block perspiration and salivation (causing dry mouth) and block mucus in the nose and throat; this can have clinical application- atropine and scopolamine can be found in some cold medications. Body temperature may soar to fever levels, and heart rate can increase by as much as fifty beats a minute. The pupils dilate markedly even at moderate doses. These drugs produce loss of muscle tone in the bladder and GI tract and inhibit the secretion of acid into the stomack ( although as an ulcer treatment, they have many side effects). In large dose the A CH antagonist produce symtoms like those of toxic psychosis: DELIRIUM, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of attention. They furthermore lack carm as recreational hallucinogens b/c they produce no vivd sensory effects; instead they cloud consciousness, impair sensory perception and obliterate recent memories so they user cannot even recall the intoxication. Their pronounced peripheral symptoms, such as dry mouth and increased heart rate, may also negatively color psychological effects. These noxious side effects and toxicity make these drugs of low abuse potential. in poisoning, death may come from respiratory paralysis. "DATURA" Datura is a genus of plants that includes many species found round the globe. In general they contain atropine, scopolamine, and hyoscyamine, and they produce a condition that has been said to be like psychotic delirium, marked by disorentation, profound confusion, and amnesia. THe name comes from "dhatureas", bands of theives in India who used datura to drug their victims into a stupor. Similarly, it has been used the world over by malefactors, theives, prostittes, and adulterers to incapacitate their victims or anyone who would interfere with their machinations. The Chibcha Indians of highland Columbia used it (D. aurea) to dose their wives and slaves who were to be buried with dead kinds (davis 1985). Datura also boasts a widespread use in primitive ritual. The Zuni Indians of the American SOuthwest chew it or put the powdered root into their eyes to pray for rain. The Virgins in the temple of Apollo may have used it to prophecy at Delphi (Ray, 1983). In many cutures, its visionalry properties are ritually linked with initiation. For example, in the initiation of the Algonquin Indians of the Eastern United States, the amnesia-inducing properties of datura played a symbolic role. Adolescent males were confined for a period of two to three weeks while they ate nothing but "wysoccan" ( datura). The object was that the delirium , disorientation, and amnesia would make the intiate forget boyhood and learn manhood (Schultes, 1970). One speciaes of datura- Datura stramonium-related to Indian hemp, is rich in atropine, scopolamine, and history. The story goes that ENglish troops coming to quell an uprising tried the berries while foraging for food and discovered its psychoactivity. the early American colonists called it "Jamestown weed" (which was elided to "jimsonweed"), and it also went by "stinkweed" "thornapple," and "devil's apple". In Haiti, Datura stragmonium is called the "zombie's cucumber". Its silver-gray leaves are large and flat, and it sports large white trumpet shaped flowers with a strong scent. The leaves can be rolled or smoked like mariguana. In large doses, it is toxic. Datura stramonium appears to have been native to Asia, but users and growers dispersed it through Europe and Africa well before Columbus. In West Africa, it appear in intiation and ordeal rituals and as a poison. In one place there, it is fed to beetles, and the poisonous dung is used to kill unfaithful lovers. Some trival users also recognize physostigmine ( the Calabar bean) as an antidote. In the Orient , it is mixed with marijuana and opium as an intoxicant. Perhaps the most interesting use of D. stramonium was unearthed by ethnobotanist Wade Davis in 1982 and 1983. Davis went to Haiti to discover if a poison (or what poison) lay at the heart of the zombie myth. His journey was inspired by the reappearance of one Clairvius Narcisse on his sister's doorstep, eighteen years after he had been pronounced dead at a modern hospital and buried. Davis sunned up his findings concerning the creation of zombies in his book, "The Serpent an dthe Rainbow" ***email me if you want this exerpt from that book********* Davis postulates that the paste fed to the awakened zombie, made of sweet potatom corn syrup, and D. stramonium, relieves certain symtoms of tetrodotoxin poisoning. The zombie is then taken to a remote district and placed on a work farm under a zombie master, where more psychoactive drugs may be sed to keep the condemned convinced that they are dead, buried, and eternally enslaved. (when his zombie master died after 18 years, Clairvius narcisse returned home) The process, Davis discovered, is part of a highly structured penal system, run by secret societes, with both judicial and religious overtones, and with unofficial recognition by the rural populace. Two other species of datura are datura inoxia and datura Metel. D. Inoxia was used by the ancient Incas as an anesthetic, and D. Metal is used in Asia to spice food and tobacco. In the United Staes, cigarttes made from datura and from Atropa Belldonna were sold as OTC drugs for asthmna until as recently as 1968 but were misused. "SEROTONERGIC HALLUCINOGENS: LSD" (i wont include the 17 pages of the psychopharmacology of this family of hallucinogens, this is already more info than you all want, but i find it intresting, let me know if you want any info from these pages) "DMT" DMT, yurema, or N, N-dimethyltryptamine, is another SE-like hallucinogen. It was synthesized int 1931 and found to be hallucinogenic in 1956. It is not widely used in the U.S. but is used in many other locales. It is the active ingredient in many South American snuffs, the most mentioned of which is Cohoba snuff (which also contains bufotenine), and in yopo, a snuff of the West Indies. The hallucinogenic drink yaje, or ayahuasca, used in South American, contains it as well (see harmaline, next section). The reason DMT is seen in so many snuffs is that it cannot be absorbe orally; it must be injected or inhaled. DMT is unusual in its rapid onset and the short duration of its trip. It was jokingly referred to in the sixties as the "businessmen's LSD" b/c it could theorectically be taken over a lunch hour. THirty milligrams inhaled shows an onset of effect in 10 seconds, with full intoxication in 2-3 minutes, and the effect end in about ten minutes. Thirty mg injected shows pupil dilation, rapid heartbeat, and increased blood pressure within 5 minutes. Full intoxication occurs in 10-15 minutes SUbjects show difficulty in concentrating and expressing their thougths, display euphoria, mirth, and behavioral exictment, and they hallucinate with eyes open or shut. In some cases, an opposite condition of paranoia, anxiety, and feelings of panic may appear. most symptoms are gone in an hour, although some resiual effect may carry over into the second hour. There is no evidence of psychological or physical dependence. "HARMALINE" Harmaline was isolated from plants in 1841 and first syntesized in 1927. Another anciently known hallucinogen, it occurs in a number of plants with psychoactive uses. In the Middle East, it is the principle alkaloid of Syrain rue ( Perganum harmala), which is taken as intoxicant. In South American it is found in several species (especially CAAPI and INEBRIANS) of the genus BANISTERIOPSIS, which are used to make YAJE ( ayahuasca), a psychoactive decoction that plays a role in puberty rituals and the initiation of shamans. An effective does of harmaline is 7o mg - 100 mg IV or 300 mg - 400 mg taken orally. After oran administration, onset comes in one hour , with a duration of action of 6 hours. First symtoms are unpleasant. Burning or prickiling of the hands, feet , or face - followed by numbness-almost always occur with onset. there may also be a feeling of pressure in the head or chest, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and general malaise. because of general discomfort and anxiety, subjects usually withdraw into a dark, quiet place. Harmaline may induce hallucination of geometric pattens and of vivid images manifesting in meaningful, dreamlike sequences. As an enzyme inhibitor, harmaline may prolong and alter the effects of drugs like MDA, LSD, and mescaline, and it may do the smae for other ingrediaents in yaje (like DMT). _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~| The stars around _______ the beautiful moon ((_______)) keep hidden their glittering | | | | radiance, whenever in its | | | | fullness it shines upon | | | | the earth | | | | - -sappho | | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~_~| ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Oct 1999 22:00:14 +0100 From: "Mike Gray" Subject: Re: Royal Albert Hall show! > Tori Amos lines up solo Albert Hall date This is, in fact the ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL, London. I was watching VH-1 the other day and I saw a commercial for a show called "The List". On one of the snippets of an episode of the show, the topic was "Sexiest woman". I wish I could find a way to see one of her full shows instead of the concertina I saw with Alanis. Added benefit would be not having to listen to drunken Alanis fans bitch about Tori after the show :(. You can't play them until you give all your info to atlantic and even then you have to connect to the internet everytime you want to play the videos that are on the CD. I encourage everyone to enter fake names and use a fake email such as webmaster@atlantic-records.com This may or may not change the way future videos are released. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Oct 1999 17:47:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Hey Pele Subject: Re: Tori pregnant? - --- Richard Handal wrote: > > It was written: > > > > The Tori tour is OVER! > > Hardly. :-) > > Tori has been getting requests, believe it or not, > for the Cornflake Girl > dance from the '96 tour. It also gives new meaning to "empty like the Tuileries" (by the way, a lot of people have been talking about the Tuileries, and what I have been able to figure out from my web travels is that there used to be a castle -- a very lavish one -- called the Tuileries, which used to be where the gardens are now. Good call, Miko! It's funny, I just read "Lords & Ladies" for the first time this summer, and didn't remember that bit when I heard 'Suede' (I'm hearing plenty of other things in Suede to keep me happy, though). Pratchett is *extremely* popular in Britain and I have no doubt that Tori's read some of his works. I'm not saying this is a direct reference from Suede to L&L, but I wouldn't rule it out.
