Maybe it's a concept album that is supposed to be more instrumental-oriented than lyric/melody-based. A lot of the lyrics are muffled by voicebox effects and have layers, so that kinda shows what Tori was trying to do with them. In a few of the songs (Datura, Suede, Riot POOF, 80s) she is obviously focusing more on the music/instruments than the lylrics. I almost felt the same way the first time I listened. It seemed not to have much to it besides the beats, but upon multiple spins (as usual), it has grown on me TREMENDOUSLY. I love it completely now, just like any of the other albums. You just have to listen again. Some more. It'll come eventually. To be blunt, perhaps you just don't get it yet. :-) Matthew I don't care what they think. For example, she worked on Choirgirl for just about a year, i think, and players from the album have quoted the number of tracks as high as 35. Now, this could be an exaggeration,... but we know there are 12 songs on the album, 7 beesides released, another two which are unreleased, plus Merman... So Tori did well over 20 tracks for the album. (though, to be exact, a third of the bees were Pele songs). The album could have been totally different... she said that Pandora and Diamonds almost were Beesides... would that have left the album ending with Purple People? Or would Merman have made it? Now, we have heard Tori quoted recently quote that there were 13 songs written for this new album, and eleven made it. See my point? Tori worked on the album as a whole for under half a year, and individual songs for nowhere near a whole year. There were really no Merman, Cooling, Honey, Upside Down et al dramas to deal with ... the album is only 11 tracks and had enough room to add two more songs. Not only was the competition not too fierce, but the songs didn't have that much time to develop. Some songs might have been totally different given more time to sit in the studio. Tori might have had other players come in, or used even more far out instruments. In this way the album is very much about movement. Moving from the tour, moving to the rest of her life. It is pretty themeless, whereas all the other albums have had "themes." However, i think it is an excellent album. I will review it soon... nite, - -krisis fly.to/AMkitchen ps: by the end of the weekend my site should have tabs for half of tVaB. As I was paying I asked the sales person of they carried the headphones that have no headband, and coil around your ear for when I go to the gym. She proceeded to tell me that they had them, and to look downstairs. I went, and looked, and nothing. They didn't exist. I came back up and told her, and she had this annoyed look on her face, as though I was bothering her. As she was giving me my change, and putting the CD in the bag, she looked at it, then looked at her friend and said ''The new Mariah is coming out today, Heartbreaker yeah, I can't wait" I just felt like saying. Oh boy you haven't heard real music. There is so much more out there. I know people like different things but, ever since I started to listen to Tori, I started realizing how stupid other music is. Anyway, on to my review. Bliss: I'm actually getting a little bored with this song, since I heard it before the CD actually came out. I guess it also has to do with what mood I'm in. I still find the beginning piano bars hypnotic, and haunting. It's a great song overall. I especially like the part "Lately, I'm... into circuitry, what it means to be, made of you but not enough of you. It just sends chills the way her voice bends during the word 'circuitry.' Juarez: I like this one a lot. The lyrics are just so melancholy. The melody and the beat just strike me in the back of the head like a baseball bat, and the piano keys sprinkled on top add to the beauty of it. I only wish I could make out her voice more. When I first heard it, I thought she was just mumbling. The no angels here line is beautiful. Concertina: There are no words to describe. Just flows so beautifully. Her voice is so perfect. Funny thing is when I first heard it, I could have sworn she was saying my name: Konstantino. If you don't pronounce every single letter and just flow my name to the tune of this song, I swear you won't know the difference. Glory of the 80's: Very Joni Mitchelish, Very folkish. It definitely has an 80's sound. I love the way everything just flows on top of everything. Layer upon layer. Lust: Reminds me of some kind of B-side, but I can't put my finger on it. I like this one a lot. The piano chords are very spooky, yet conforting. Suede: I love the way she sings here, it's like there are no rules. Just spilling everything out. Very moody, and lusty. I can see myself singing this to someone I find attractive from across the room. The guitar is active here also, adds much beauty to it. The line that convinced me... "My fear is greater than my faith, but I walk the missionary way" ... and "Anybody knows you can conjure anything by the dark of the moon" Josephine: This song does nothing for me. I'm still waiting for it to hit me. We'll see what happens. Riot Poof: I am severely attached to this song. I can completely see the Matthew Shepherd connection. She's telling him "Blossom, riot poof" Poof being slang for gay, and all the craziness that came along after his death, the marches, the picketers and homophobes, you can say it was a riot. And she's telling him to blossom. I can totally see it. And "Break the terror of the urban spell" That explains itself. Most of society is an urban spell, and we're always trying to find the reverse spell. This song makes sense to me, period. I love it. I love the way her voice flows, when she says "Blossom..... Riot Poof... " and then that synthesizer beat that zigzags right in back of her. Datura: This is a song I would love to get high to, and then listen to. First of all, I love her persistence of 'Get out of my garden" the way she spits that out drives me crazy. She's like "This is my shit, if you want it you better go through me, and even if you do there is no guarantee" The song enchants me. All these ingredients ... herbs, flowers, cherry, chocolate, shrimp, spices etc. My God, I want some. I want to experience all of them. The smells, the tastes, the feelings. I just feel like I'm floating into this song, like enwrapped by it. The way the percussion hits around the second or third verse of Dividing Canan. An emotional bomb, utilizing all your senses. Spring Haze: Sounds like a B-side off of LE that we never knew about. The background drums sound a lot like what she used to play in between songs on the plugged, and 5.5 weeks tours. That tribal beating of drums, with piano sneaking in. I like this one a lot. 1000 oceans: I didn't like it when I got the single, but it grew on me. It's very gut-wrenching. Pouring out ones heart to the point where they are drained. 1000 oceans, filled with ones tears, will stop at no limit. I get the feel of true affection in this song. A nice closing. Overall, I'm very happy with the new music. We needed it. I just have one issue that just annoys me to death. Why can't I hardly hear my dear Tori's voice in some of these songs, why is she do drowned out, why is there so much staticy synthesizer overpowering her. I don't like it. Choirgirl WAS SO CRISP. I mean, each song was so sharp. TVAB is so staticy. Am I the only person who sees this? Guys post some more reviews. I wanna see what everyone thinks. - -Gus Silver Dollar Eucalyptus Give me peace, love and a hard cock. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 18:57:01 GMT From: zoey68@mindspring.com (pani) Subject: questions what is a digi pack? what is a jewel case? anyone, please? pani "threads that are golden don't break easily" - -Tori Amos ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 14:24:09 EDT From: Icicle1139@aol.com Subject: still trying... (hehehe) but JAY LENO doesnt prowl around tori-web and read all of her interviews and care about all that cute tori-ism things. hes there for the salary and fame. he doesnt make up his jokes, i doubt he makes up his own questions... the point is, i think that hes just as socially mysterious as tori in a way, and i think you misunderstood his facial expressions when she said something wierd. maybe you were looking for something to complain about? anyways, not flaming i swear!!! jsut disagreeing. - -courtney http://www.angelfire.com/bc/rapideye ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 1999 07:47:09 GMT From: zoey68@mindspring.com (pani) Subject: Re: question about jewel case version please? what is a jewel case and what is a digi pack? panifrangipani On Fri, 24 Sep 1999 00:00:57 GMT, you wrote: > > > > >>From: "1 bugle boy model saying 'baby, it's a freebie you sure look >>deprived'" >>Reply-To: "1 bugle boy model saying 'baby, it's a freebie you sure look >>deprived'" >>To: "Precious Things: A Tori Amos Mailing List" >>Subject: question about jewel case version >>Date: Thu, 23 Sep 1999 01:31:13 -0700 >> >> >>has anyone actually seen tvab in the jewel case that some have been talking >>about? >> >>someone mentioned that best buy and target have tvab in jewel case form and >>someone else said wal-mart has it.........but has anyone actually seen it? >> >>thanks >> >>trent. >> >>"If you believe in the spirit world, you believe in it, if you don't, >>that's your arrogance. Guess who was on? RIGHT! Tori. Hehe. It was some kind of interview... she was looking really pretty. I caught like 5 minutes of it... I don't know how long it was. I only caught like perhaps 3 or 4 questions... the rest was just beautiful footage of, I'm guessing, England... an ocean view (while they played "1,000 Oceans" on the background). They did the same with "Bliss" and I think (haven't heard the song yet) "Glory Of The 80s". I'm not home right now (I'm in the Uni) so this is not a transcript but what I can remember is that, regarding "commercial success" and going mainstream and all that: "They can suck my dick!". She also talked about success and how her conception of it is basically about "getting to know your well" and "freedom of spirit". The other question I caught was something like "What's the nicest thing you could think of that someone could say to you after listening to "to venus and back"?". She just said that a nice bottle of wine... would do it. She actually didn't said that it "would do it" but she made this really cute gesture. It was really pretty. Oh, regarding the question about commercial success she also mentioned her grandfather, how he had had Cherokee blood and how she remembers him telling her that you had to be true to your blood and roots. This is all if I remember well, I probably don't! Hehe. I don't know how long it was originally but I'll try to catch it again, hopefully they will put it on again sometime soon. It was called "Documentaire". Take care, Giovanni (desperately waiting for CDNOW to ship his CDs, next Tuesday) http://come.to/corncity ********************************************************* "Boys on my left side, "If I ran away, boys on my right side, I'd never have the strength, boys in the middle, to go very far..." and you're not here..." -Madonna - -Tori Amos "Take this man to your bed, "Time cast a spell on you, maybe his hands but you won't forget me will help you forget I know I could have loved you Please be stronger than your past, but you would not let me the future may still give you I'll follow you down 'til a chance..." the sound of my voice will haunt you - -George Michael you'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you..." I won't post it now. It has some new insights about life in Cornwall, and nice photos, but much of it is the standard "spot the minor factual blunder" bio and RAINN information. Here's a couple of snippets: - - - - - SOUL SURVIVOR The past is a painful place for Tori Amos, but, as Jennifer Asiama reports, the singer who suffered rape, miscarriage and heartache, has finally found peace in a remote corner of Cornwall. Photographs by Derrick Santini [double-page photo of T sitting by small wooden shack near shingle/stone beach] [snip ...] Today, Amos is in a talkative mood. As we bundle into the back of her four-wheel drive, she asks Nat, her PA, who is in the driver's seat, to take us to her 'secret place by that cliff' in a remote part of her adopted Cornwall. Then, as if someone had pressed play on the 'Tori machine', she's off. In the five-minute drive, she talks about how little time she has left to work on her new album, -To Venus And Back-. In less than a month, she'll be on the road in the States, headlining a tour with Alanis Morrisette, entitled -Five 1/2 Weeks-. Actually, the tour is a bit longer than that, she explains, but this is her 'Mickey Rourke reference'. "I wanted to do something sexy on this tour--the feminist fist-in- the-air thing has been done. I'm hoping to blindfold the piano and rub down Alanis with ice cubes," she says, grinning mischievously. "But I'm not sure if she'll find it funny." Amos goes silent and peers out of the window as Nat turns off a winding country lane. The car draws to a halt and Amos gets out and begins to clamber down the hill. She stops suddenly, remembering to ask if I'm OK with the steep climb. I say yes, but she holds out a hand and leads me towards her cliff. Amos' hands are tiny, childlike, warm and very, very soft. Definitely not the dishwashing kind, I muse--more those of an artist, a creator, the kind that are usually insured for a few million. "This is where I come to think," says Amos, sitting down and crossing her legs. "This is where I take all the information I've been given, and walk it through. It's where I talk to the artist in me." We are perched at some 300 ft above sea level. The ocean lies before us like a huge blanket, and other than the seagulls cruising noisily above our heads, there is not a living soul in sight. [quarter page flash-lit profle at dusk on beach] I am curious to know what it is about Cornwall--or, more to the point, the tiny town of Bude (population 7,000)--that has captivated her. There is not a designer store in sight and Buffalo Bill's is the only place you can get a meal after 9pm on a Sunday. Even then, last orders must be in by 10pm. This town is probably as far away from rock 'n' roll as it gets. Yet it is where Tori and her British husband of eighteen months, Mark Hawsley [sic], have decided to set up home. Against the signs for clotted cream and deck chairs, she is as exotic as a rare bird in Trafalgar Square. They met while Mark was working as a sound engineer on one of her tours. "I looked up to see who was responsible for this amazing sound and saw the beautiful calves that went with it." She knew instantly that "he was the one", but the timing was out-- they were both "in lives with other people". So she decided to let things run their course. Eventually he proposed and they were married last year in a medieval theme wedding. They live in a farmhouse, with a state-of-the-art studio built by local craftsmen in a 300-year-old barn. "What I like about it here is that the people are pretty direct," she says. "You don't have to walk around constantly editing yourself. In some cities you visit, the people are just simply too cool for the room. Cornwall isn't like that--here, no one puts on masks." She also loves the history of the area. "Places speak to you, and I think the land holds its secrets here. Sometimes it gets really foggy and the locals might speculate about whether there has been a shipwreck. You start fantasising that maybe the Guatemalans got lost, and there's a kilo stranded out on Midriff Bay and maybe we should check it out just in case..." [snip] You get the feeling that Tori's OK, that she's getting to where she needs to be in her life. She still does great rock, but is relishing the rustic existence she and Mark have made for themselves. The one that allows her to eat homemade bread in her kitchen daily and run around in her green wellies and old shorts talking out loud to flowers. An existence that allows her to be artistic, kooky, complex. We wouldn't want her any other way. ===== RAINN can be contacted at: 635b Pennsylvania Avenue, South East Washington, DC 20003, USA (00 1 202 544 1032; fax: 00 1 202 544 3556).
