Hi Guys, Owing to a thoughtful friend, I have in my posession an article entitled "A Bride Stripped Bare" from the London Times (Sept 21st 1999 ) P.41 (of the Arts secition (3)) - eek, long reference. Some of you in the US may well be able to get this today if you know somewhere that sells international newspapers. Nothing majorly new, and as I'm moving to university I don't have time to type it up, but there's a couple of choice quotes... "I'm a daughter of a minister and I love chasing the dark. That which is hidden. I like licking it like an ice-cream." "It's so easy to create soundbites. It's really hard to create beauty"... If you have access to a copy, someone, please type it up? The problem I have with the new stuff is it *doesn't* > sound new to me. It's going over the same ground as Choirgirl, not really > exploring any new directions. Um...no. The programming work on Choirgirl was very different from that of Venus. Venus has gone in a more industrial direction rather than rock. The samples used and drum loops and programming on Venus are much more jungle/techno than rock, as in Choirgirl. Just go listen to iieee then to Juarez and see if you can't tell a VERY distinct difference. The songs have a very similar feel in general, but the actual composition of them is remarkably different. It's a completely new direction. Matthew I don't care what they think. I don't care what they say. what do they know about this love anyway? I am no regular poster. God, I'm a grade one teacher, lucky if I have time to go pee during the day. Yesterday the gods were on my side because we had a day off and I marched myself to the downtown HMV to pick up Tori and NIN. For all of you lucky Americans who complain about the prices of CD's, try living in Canada. I picked it up for 24.99 and the funny thing is that it cost 29.99 at the local mall down the street. When did music get so expensive? Anyhow, this one is a dream to listen to. I was shell-shocked when I bought FTCH because it was so different. Of course a couple of million runs through the album and I couldn't turn it off. I find this one so similar that it was amazing to listen to the first time through. I can't get over the fact that she doesn't have Merman on any of these albums. My god, it is an absolutely beautiful song. The live stuff is great, feels like I'm back at her concert again. I'm so happy she did a double CD. If only I could start playing this in my class. I don't think the principal would be too happy about that. Well, best get back to marking. Just my 2 cents. Her sixth recording, the double disc To Venus and Back, testifies to just how wide and deep her river runs. The two CDs -- Venus Orbiting, an unplanned studio effort that Amos recorded suddenly this summer, and Venus Live, Still Orbiting, a set of thirteen live songs from her recent world tour -- are not exactly opposites, but they are far from twins. Venus Orbiting is Amos at her most surreal, dreaming of her past, her pain and her desires in supersaturated musical and lyrical color. The CD's first words, trademark Amos phantasma -- "Father, I killed my monkey/I let it out to taste the sweet of spring" -- function as its mission statement: Autobiographical as ever, Amos aims to simultaneously uncover her inner history and cloak it in the wildest symbols she can find. Venus' music is equally ornate, flush with technology: mystery-ridden keyboardscapes and sample-and-loop witchery. Amos' stock in trade, her voice and piano, are often mere bit players on Venus. But just when it seems Amos has given herself over to the seductions of electronics, she pulls out a heart stopper: "Josephine," a stunning, regret-strewn Cowboy Junkies-sounding quickie that's just Amos, a drum, a bass and her ivories. Perhaps for balance, or simply for the sake of completeness, Venus Live, Still Orbiting spotlights Amos' more acoustic material, most of it performed with her crackerjack touring band. It's Amos' first live recording, long overdue, and it works equally well as a greatest-hits collection. Crowd faves like "Cornflake Girl," "Waitress" and "Cooling" -- which has never before surfaced on an album -- make showstopping appearances. With To Venus and Back, Amos pays herself the ultimate compliment: She's good and complicated.
