I need to make my "why are you so obsessed with tori?" friend an EWF by tuesday the 31st. Well maybe not an EWF, a fan will do. He's going with me to the concert I didn't know I was going to until today. For as long as I can remember, he's made fun of me for my obsession. However, he had not actually heard a song by tori. Today he heard Bliss on the radio and reported to me, obviously surprised "I actually liked it!" He's promised to sit down and really listen to a tape if I make him one. What songs should I include? Songs like Mr. Zebra, although one of my favorites, are probably not good for this sort of "crash course" in tori. I want this to be a good experience for the both of us. So I'm asking you all, what songs really grabbed you and made you fall in love with tori? Maybe it was the first song you heard, or maybe it was more recent. I don't want this to be a survey type thing that generates hundreds of emails for our poor moderator to deal with, so if you're just sending a list, I recommend writing to me privately. Okay, another thing. I have never been to a concert. Any concert. What should I bring, wear? How hot will it get with all those people? I'm only five feet tall, is it worth it to wear tall but slightly uncomfortable shoes? I've been to about 10 Tori shows since Boys for Pele, and I have to say that the two I've been to on this tour were the least satisfying for me. Dew Drop Inn was terrific, and the shows I went to last summer were completely magical. It just seemed to me that Tori wasn't with this 51/2 weeks tour, if that makes any sense. She just wasn't the same Tori on stage. When she played "Blood Roses" in Charlotte, I had to get up and go out to smoke and cry in the pouring rain. I felt that it was "butchered". I hate to say something that negative, but that's how I felt. Think about it, even in the lyrics of the new album, it's not the same Tori. Most of the lyrics are, I hate to say it, generic. It seems "forced" to me. It all seems forced. Remember, To Venus and Back was going to include Bsides and live stuff... then all of a sudden it was all new material? I don't care if Tori said that the new songs just kept coming... that's probably true... I don't know. It just rubs me the wrong way. Like Atlantic said "No, Tori. Give us new songs so that we can reach the mainstream Lilith Fair teenyboppers. And if you really want to make your old-school fans happy, yes, you can keep the live album. And when you get up on stage, try to behave. Keep the octaves down, okay? Just try to stay "studio" ." >> sorry for quoting so much, but I want you guys to know what I'm referring to :) I agree with you about the tour ... but the new album??? mainstream? I think not. And a live album to keep us happy? I don't know about the rest of you but I would much much rather have a new album anyday over a live album. From what I have heard of the new songs ... they sound amazing ... and much like the stuff from choirgirl but better ... less mainstream (I haven't heard any raspberry swirl type stuff, which IMHO was her most mainstream and "non-tori" song ever). And about atlantic telling her what to do on tour ... they have Nothing to do with this tour - it is sponsored by Mp3 and Best Buy. I do think its weird that she is doing pretty much the same setlist every night, but thats her choice ... if those are the songs that she feels like doing then so be it. Theres really nothing we can do about that. <> Although I agree with you somewhat about the weirdness ...however neither me nor you can say what is "tori" ... she does what she wants to do and she does not need to justify it to anyone. I think that instead of reading more into this than we need to, we should just be grateful that we are getting all of this stuff ... even if you don't like the new songs ... would you rather have nothing? And whats wrong with the merchandise? Some of it is really cool ... even though I think the 1990-ish surfer-boy necklace is tacky and would never wear it (even though I bought one) and that that weird homemade looking t-shirt with the piano and supernova juice on it is hilariously bad ... but the other stuff (and I stress the MAJORITY of the stuff) is really cool. If this came across as rude, I'm sorry - I really don't mean to be ... I just want to get to the root of all of this negativity surrounding tori's current endeavors. I know alot of people that have been disappointed with this tour and that alot of people want her to keep putting out little earthquakes over and over again ... she is a totally different person now, she has evolved and so has her music. Personally I like it but I do respect the opinions of people who don't ... but I think they need to respect Tori's choices a little bit better. (this is not in reference to anyone on precious things - many of my non-internet toriphile friends feel this way) kisses, joanne ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 07:28:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Jennifer Mitts Cypres Subject: Interview review for TVaB I haven't seen it posted, so here it is (Sept. Issue, Interview magazine): Less histrionic [I hate when they use that word when describing Tori] and more atmospheric than her earlier work, To Venus and Back finds the singer-songwriter playing with a whole bag of new tricks. She's got inverted jungle beats that buzz and rattle, sound effects that sift into songs as though from far away, drumming that recalls the stomp of John Bonham, and bubbling synthesizers that percolate like a witch's brew. With experimental production details, textured rhythms, and a seemingly infinite melodic range, Amos trips expansively from teh mournful to the celebratory on this wonderful, moody, and mildly psychedelic outing. Bonus: For listeners ;who still want t o hear her sing a piano ballad, there's an accompanying CD with live performances of her earlier material. - --Dimitri Ehrlich __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thank you for your well thought out and intellegent comeback. :) I really appreciate that. However, I do stand firm in my beliefs. I respect Tori's choices, I do. I respect the fact that she has evolved, as does everyone and everything. But I have heard some fans go to the extreme that we, as loyal EWF's, must stand firmly behind everything she chooses to do just because it's Tori... and that if we disagree with her decision that we are just not good fans, and may very well be left out of the roll books in Tori Heaven and be sent to hell with the rest of the heretics and hypocrites. I don't believe that. Respecting Tori's wishes does not mean we (I) have to like everything she does. That's like saying that if I read Plato I'd be offending Nietzsche, or if I listened to the Cure, I'd offend Peter Gabriel... vice versa and so on and so forth. It doesn't matter that mp3.com and Best Buy are sponsoring the tour. Atlantic still has to make the deal. A lot of folks don't realize that the music industry is run by nazis... lollipop gestapos, if you will. It's all about selling records and making money... they don't care about what the artists themselves really want to do. Sure she made the choice to go along with it, yes, it was her decision... but I for one, will take Pele by the hand and run off to my own little sector of the Tori Universe, far from Alanis tours and the nonsense that meet and greets have turned into ("if I could but touch the hem of her apron, then I shall be healed! and you buddy, I don't care if you've been waiting 15 hours, i've been to more meet and greets than you, me and tori are real tight, so get outta my way") and wait patiently, or let my Tori Karma take it's course. I guess I'm making a big deal out of this, I didn't mean to, and it's not really that big of a deal in my mind. I'm just respecting my right as a Tori fan to say "no, i don't like this, and I don't have to buy this or go there to be a good and decent fan. i can still love her for all that she is and all that she sings about and, yes, even as a person (not a deity, as I once so avidly believed) without the addiction that plagues so many." thanks for your tolerance, hope some of you don't hate me too badly. candy kisses and razorblades, J ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 12:40:06 EDT From: ToriPhileX@aol.com Subject: I am back! +Read Webcast Traders+ Hey everyone. If anything, Tori appears to be pretty happy with touring with Alanis. At the Nashville show (Tori's birthday), after secret time, everyone came out with a big cake for Tori. Tori ran around and gave everyone a hug, then went back to Alanis and gave her a big kiss. That doesn't strike me as the act of someone who's not pleased to be touring, or not pleased to be touring with Alanis. Tori's the one who decided to tour. IMHO, Alanis got lucky and asked Tori to tour at the exact right time: when Tori knew she had new material. Tori's said in interviews that the band was also asking if she wanted to tour, and she did. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 16:33:54 EDT From: Cdfreke@aol.com Subject: Songs a while ago ( last week i think ) some one posted a list of all the new songs and where to find them to download if anyone has that could you please send it to me toodles matt the merman a message from the fish tank ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 11:26:33 -0500 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: Bliss single At 06:22 AM 8/27/99 -0700, copperdryad wrote: >four episode lesbian wrote: > > there are two versions of the "bliss" single and it sounds like you bought > > the regular one. > >i am so disappointed in these, or should i say, the lack of content on >the maxi... i can deal with paying the $3 for the single, but usually >maxis have 5 songs (hence, "maxi 5"), and i was grossly disappointed to >see that the bliss maxi not only ONLY has 3 songs on it, but that one of >them is the same bee-side as the single... :( >i understand the marketing behind singles, but this is a little >ridiculous... and of course collector that i am, buys them both >anyway... Actually, "maxi 5" has nothing to do with the number of songs on the single. It has to do with the size of the single. When CDs were first released, many CD singles were released on 3" singles. To distinguish between the 3" singles and the 5" singles, the music industry called them "CD3" and "CD5", and sometimes referred to the 5" singles as "maxi" singles. 3" singles have since fallen out of favor [1], but the designation of "CD5" and "maxi" lives on. /nad [1] There are still a few folks releasing 3" singles. "Rare" is -VERY DEFINITELY- not the right word. There were 800,000 of BfP with the original Talula pressed -- and that's not including promotional material, vinyl, or CDs. This CD is not rare AT ALL. Unless we're going to redefine "rare" as "less than a million made", which I personally ain't willing to do. You can still purchase BfP in a new prepackaged form with the original Talula -- it completely depends on how many your CD store got of the original and how many they sold. However, you can't just take the word of the packaging here: when BfP was re-released with the Tornado mix, the liner notes still said that it was the original Talula. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 14:43:15 EDT From: Skylar2@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: 5 1/2 weeks... hi. sorry i didnt paste. oh well. i agree with jivadiva (cuz what a kick ass name) the the whole alanis tour seems like an unlikely place for tori to be. but let me wholeheartedly disagree that tori's new album is not up to her usual standards. i was lucky enough to be front row at three shows this tour and was amazed at the depth of joy etc that tori was expressing. she absolutely rocked. the band is so tight, the music is evolving , and tori seems to be loving it. as for the new album. what i have heard is unbelievably amazing. i never think tori can best herself, but she has. tvab i think is an amazing acheivement. this woman is genius. absolute genius. i think your opinion is valid, of course, jivadiva, despite the fact that i disagree with it. maybe once the album comes out and you get to listen to it wholly, you;ll feel different. but some people just dont like the directions tori's music is going in,...its all a matter of personal taste. it's not blasphemy to say you dont like it. but i love it!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 22:11:53 +0100 From: "E.L Walker" Subject: Competition Entry It really pisses me off that all Tori Amos related competitions that I've found via such sites as the 5 1/2 weeks site and the Alloy.com poetry competition are only for entry by U.S residents only....the rest of the world does exist, and Tori does have fans in other parts of the world!. I had no choice but to put my stuff on the ground under my chair. But of course, somehow, water, beer and juice got all over everything! And the tour book I got is completely ruined :( *******I have one thing to beware people of: If you are planning to buy stuff at the concerts, bring a bag or a bookbag to put it in!!! At least if shit is spilt all over your bag, your stuff will be protected! Another thing I noticed: there were two completely different crowds for tori and alanis. After tori was done, everyone around my left and a bunch of new people came! This i really don't understand - tori's and alanis' music is very similar IMO. I would have thought some people would have left but not EVERYONE! Especially with tori's 'new sound' it's not worlds different from alanis' music. I could see if tori was touring with jewel (i love jewel and her music but her style of lyrics and music is soooo different than tori's) - then I could see everyone leaving! I just wanted to tell of this observation i made :) Did anyone else notice this? Oh well I love all of their music! Anyway, if anyone is interested in Alanis' setlist (she was also incredible and really seemed to love the audience) here it is: Hand In My Pocket All I Really Want Would Not Come Are You Still Mad Sympathetic Character That I Would Be Good You Learn Forgiven Mary Jane So Pure You Oughta Know Uninvited Thank You Ironic **Thank you krisis for getting the order right for me! lol - -amanda ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #256 *************************************
