It was only the first show, too. A lot of songs have been majorly reworked and I approved of all of that. The whole show is very oriented toward forward motion. It was amazing to see her come out again and play. She was having a hell of a good time. It was moving and wonderful. Almost all the folks I know who've seen a lot of shows in their time were quite impressed. As a sign of things to come on the tour it was most confidence-inspiring. Here are the times-- Greta Gaines: 7:33 - 7:59 (She tried to do one more song but they gave her the hook, if nicely.) Tori: 8:19 - 8:32 Alanis: 10:03 - 11:30 It took the crew half an hour to get the stage ready for Alanis. Here's hoping they can get that pared down soon or it's gonna get ugly out there for all the outdoor shows where they will HAVE to stop at 11pm because of noise curfews. As it was, I imagine that last night they had to pay penalties for running past 11pm. Tori's set seemed an entity unto itself. It really didn't seem short to me, but I was expecting a 75 minute set so I guess I was prepared for that. But honestly, to me it seemed like an entire concept, not a regular solo length show cut off in the middle. I was pretty surprised to see her do an encore at all. I can't understand anyone who would not have been pleased to hear some of the older more popular songs in this manner as they were so *thoroughly* reworked in some cases as to have been entirely unrecognizable from the introductions. Crucify was amazing. The new arrangements seem to have turned the songs inside out in some instances. And, boy, was I ever not expecting Blood Roses and Professional Widow! She really knocked us on our ears, and had a great time while doing it. It always touches a special place in my heart to see her come out onstage and sit at the piano and play, but this tour seems to be at a fairly high level of communication and tightness already. If this is where they're starting off from, I can only imagine where they'll be by the end of this tour. I hope I can find a way to see for myself. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #245 *************************************
