I haven't read many of his > books myself, but I'm wondering if this is covered in any of them at any > length. Might be interesting to look into... :) I definitely thought of Campbell's teachings when I first heard the song title Bliss. If one considers the amount of mythological references Tori uses in her life and music, let alone that she has mentioned Campbell in interviews, one can't stress enough that it's highly worthwhile to check out anything associated with Campbell if one wants deeper understanding of Tori's music and thoughts. There's a handy if somewhat less than professionally done web site kept by the Joseph Campbell Foundation at: http://www.jcf.org. The site contains a complete videography, as well as bibliography, list of Campbell audiotapes, etc. I never read any of his books, but the idea of following one's bliss is definitely one of the main ideas behind, if not *the* main thrust behind Joseph Campbell's studies. It's kind of the the fruit one ends up with if one climbs the tree of knowledge of the history of myths around the world, and is brought to a head by the grail romances. Episode 4 of the six part series of Campbell interviews done by Bill Moyers for PBS in 1988 is titled "Sacrifice and Bliss," and I've also seen those lectures Violet's talking about. The 1987 documentary done by a San Diego PBS station titled "The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work" shows Campbell speaking of following one's own bliss, too. The mythological basis for it which he cites is how the grail romance legends, Parzival being chief among them, introduced the idea of "true love" into a society which had been dealing with arranged marriages and blindly following into one's family business without questioning it. The idea that one might be able to choose one's own mate after having fallen in love with them was a new one back in the 1,100s in England, specifically Cornwall, where the Arthur romances are set. Cornwall. What a coincidence, huh? Campbell goes on to say in that Hero's Journey doc that if one follows what is deep in one's own heart, what one is most passionately interested in, the world has a way of getting behind a person to help them get where they're trying to go. This is where George Lucas got the concept of The Force for the Star Wars series; and in fact, Lucas is featured in that Hero's Journey doc, as well as in a new Moyers PBS interview special a few months ago titled "The Mythology Of Star Wars With George Lucas And Bill Moyers." He's already been shown to be one of the most influential figures in art over the last few decades, and I think his teachings will only continue to grow in popularity as more and more people discover the archetypically pan-cultural themes used as the bases of his books and lectures. It's a shame he isn't around to see it, as he died in 1987 at age 83. I suspect that a number of public libraries carry not only his books, but his lectures, and some of the other videotapes as well. If your local public library doesn't have them then college libraries in your area might. The lecture series Violet alluded to had been playing here recently in Maryland on the UMUC (University of Maryland University College) cable station, but it's not on during the summer. I hope they start it over again in the fall. The lecture Violet saw is from the series titled "Transformations of Myth Through Time." The episode was one of the final three of the series and was probably the one titled "Where There Was No Path: Arthurian Legends and the Western Way." The limited edition singles were printed in limited quantities in the first place, so they're even more rare. I wanted to post the entirety of a couple of texts on the list here, since some of it is very interesting in light of some of Tori's past comments about her drug use. Unfortunately, the list owner has asked me not to post the information, since it is quite lengthy. I'm not comfortable cutting it down, so I just wanted to let you all know if you're interested, please email me and I will send you the information, including some URLs where you can get more information if you have web access.
