The resulting double-album, "to venus and back," Amos' fifth project on Atlantic, is set for release Sept. 21. It features live renditions from the recent tour supporting her "from the choirgirl hotel" album and 12 new self-penned/produced tracks, which are tagged with the intense, soul-searching lyrical textures and complex melodies that the platinum artist's steadfast base of fans has come to live and breathe. For the unexpected studio album, Amos says that she found herself confronted with a free flow of inspiration and decided to run with it. "I had originally thought we were tracking stuff for the B-sides album, and all of these songs kept coming," she says. "The writing gods decided to stop by, and you try and be there when the muse decides she wants to hang out with you." "To venus and back" will be previewed with an as-yet-undetermined track to hit radio Aug. 6, with a commercial single likely to follow. Both are aimed to coincide with Amos' 25-date, co-headlining tour with Alanis Morissette, opening Aug. 18 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and wrapping Sept. 25 in Los Angeles. Fans and proponents of the artist have long held her live gigs to be the benchmark of Amos' full creative sense of expression, particularly given her signature rhythm-and-writhe performance style, which must be seen to be fully appreciated. "The show that we did was about an hour and 40 minutes every night. We're trying to get the people that have come to the show a semblance of what they saw," Amos says of the album, though she acknowledges that it's a tough task picking which performances best fit the project. "I hope to get 11 or 12 songs on the album, but 'Waitress' is 9&fraction minutes long, and 'Precious' is seven minutes long. We'll have to see which ones make the semifinals." A BAND IN TOW The new studio album marks the first time Amos has recorded with her road band, in this case a team of four musicians she shared a bus with for nine months. The five play on the live album, as well. "You get to know who likes the pizza crust and which one likes 'Teletubbies' at that point," Amos says. "Something happens when you spend that much time with people. "It became quite exciting, because we had no idea we were cutting a new record. It just grabbed me by the throat, really," she adds. "We ended up working around the clock and putting it together pretty quickly." Themes on "venus" range from a troubling anthem about unavoidable father and daughter ties on "Bliss" to a whirlwind Los Angeles-based fantasy about the decade past in "Glory Of The '80s," from which the album title is derived. "Looking back, I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else in the '80s than as a working musician in L.A.," Amos notes. "You just can't match that kind of decadence." HIDDEN BEHIND THE HEART "No one event shaped this record," she says of the full body of the project. "I sort of just let my observations take over. I realized that as a songwriter, you're not always going to have those moments where you're flying over Afghanistan and seeing fires and being told it's a war. You have to keep taking adventures and exposing yourself, but there are things in daily living that hide behind everybody's heart, and that's always fascinated me." Instrumental sounds are even more experimental than with previous efforts, bordering on industrial in some cases, alongside the traditional mass of sometimes joyous, often deliberately chaotic, vocal layers that define Amos. That stamp is all the stronger with her behind the boards as producer of the project. "Being my own producer, no one can buy me to turn on my artist," she says wryly. "I also understand how they work with budgets, so I realize how not to get ripped off that way." Amos contends that making a record is very much a group effort that, for her, is not a single-minded mode of thinking. "It's not like I don't have a team of musicians and engineers around me that I respect," she says. When one of them has a suggestion, "I will literally change my shoes and let the artist leave the room," she adds. "There's the one side who writes songs and spills her guts out. Then she leaves, and we have to make it good on the other side." She will have the opportunity to present much of the new material during the upcoming tour with Morissette, which Amos finds an appropriate pairing -- but for reasons that have little to do with musical matchmaking. "I've never done a tour like this before -- with somebody," Amos says. "It was actually [Morissette's] idea. She had come to see me at Jones Beach [in Long Island, N.Y.], and we had a cup of tea and a giggle and got along really well. "We share a lot of the same philosophies of putting on a show, which is important. I'm talking about the semantics of it, not just the music. Having all of these people on the road together is like a little town on the road, where you're all part of the same tribe. People do it differently, and it's difficult to pull it off with someone who doesn't hold the same priorities. "I do think we're going to draw people that want an exciting evening," she says. With her work on the albums nearly done and a tour on the books, Amos says she's ready to present her new testaments to her public, hoping they'll enjoy it, but with no particular mandate. "I have no idea what people think about when they listen to my work," she says. "It's one of those things where if I was a fly, I probably wouldn't want to be in the room. I just put it out there, and people can think what they want." Copyright © 1999 Billboard Magazine and BPI Communications Inc. All rights reserved. Hosted by Telescan Inc. I also apologize to you guys and gals about my random spurt about Courtney Love that came a little late. I've been away to the ocean and was trying to catch up. Tori, on Storytellers told the story about the little boy that would come and sing to her, so, check that out a little further. "need a lip gloss boost in your America" - losing her baby was a terrible ordeal and having her lip gloss helps her out. Saying "your" makes this country ours and not hers. Her family's here and a few friends, who probably helps her out and her fans are always steadfastly hers and here. "is it God's; is it yours: sweet saliva" - Who's baby is it? God's? Her's? "I know we're dying" - the baby's dying and she's connected to it, so .. . . you know. "and there's no sign of a parachute" - I liked the Lord of the Flies interp to this one. The story involved sacrifice of the civilized soul as well as the characters. A random war pilot was shot down and fell to the island, dead, in his parachute, which the boys thought was a beastie. "why does there have to be a sacrifice" - Childbirth is one of the most beautiful things that humans do. Some consider it a gift from god. She's pissed off at the whole thing and, possibly, blames the church a little bit. Her child was sacrificed, for some reason, unbeknownst to her. "just say yes, you little arsonist" - Tori's a famous arsonist, so she says. "you're so sure you can save every hair on my chest" - This, I think, goes back to the Spark line "She's convince she could hold back a glacier". Tori always thought that she was a strong woman and could take care of herself, but she still lost her baby. Hair on chests reminds one of a male - strongness in basic terms if you want to think that way. She wishes that she could have handled it with a little more grace and elegance. But, like all natural mothers, it's a hellish price to pay and one of the most painful that any human being would ever have to suffer. This is an interp. Nothing more. So, read it or don't. It's just an opinion. Have a lipglossy day - I probably won't because I'm not a big fan of the stuff, becky ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 14:18:57 EDT From: XXXPandora@aol.com Subject: Re: Just a thought... This is from my boyfriend ... I always turn to him to help us out with stuff like this :) In a message dated 99-07-14 13:12:30 EDT, you write: << If they couldn't get out of their contracts then I don't understand how Tori might "buy out" *her* contract. >> This is not question of buying out a contract. This is a question of someone who is still under contract buying back the ownership of her first album, which is fairly common practice in the industry. It's very simple. The label fronted the cash for YKTR to be recorded, promoted, etc. Seeing as the label spends on average $500,000 just to 'break' a new artist, this is not pocket change. As it stands, let's say the album cost $125K to record. That's an advance, not free money for Tori. That money will be paid back to the label out of her percentage of mechanical (sales, not songwriting) royalties- this is called 'recoupable' costs. Since YKTR sold all of 5 copies , if the record didn't recoup the initial costs (out of Tori's mechs, not the label's), technically she owes the label the difference, and the ownership of the physical album is retained by the label. No, they're not gonna charge her, but one of a few things may happen: A) She's dropped and becomes a tax writeoff. B) She's given a second album, and second chance. C) She's given a second album, but that album must recoup its own costs AS WELL as the cost of the first album. This is called 'cross-collaterization.' It's up to the label then to decide if they will allow the artist to purchase the album for the remaining amount owed, and they usually will. It satnds to reason that Atlantic must be treating Tori well, as by industry standard she would've been able to renegotiate by now, and they probably would just give her YKTR in good faith, or to satisfy an option. As for Prince, the label felt he wanted to put out too much material in too short an amount of time, saturating the market. He'd signed a contract stipulating the time periods for delivery of his albums, and he attempted to violate that agreement. >>so I really see that she might try to work out a way to have her own label, or otherwise figure out a way so she ends up with much more control than she's got right now once her Atlantic contract runs out.<< I would think it would be far too difficult at this stage for her to 'go indy.' Tours are very expensive to put on, distribution and airplay, promotion and manufacturing as well at her level. Why would she want to? Atlantic has been with her this whole time, and by time scale alone it's obvious she could've left by now. Now you guys can see how you can sell a million records and end up with $20,000 in your pocket!:) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 16:14:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Jennifer Mitts Cypres Subject: Tori Yahoo Chat summarized Well, the Tori & Steve Madden chat tonight on Yahoo was pretty much uneventful. She just basically answered a lot of shoe questions. BTW, she's a size 7-7-1/2, of course we knew that. The name of the new album according to Tori is "Venus. Orbiting." for the studio album and "Venus. Live. Still Orbiting." for the live album. She's doing the master of the studio album tomorrow morning. There's 11 new tracks. She described the music this way: she's doing a few sound experiments to show how her character is forming and reforming, like particles shifting. The music will be with a full band, the guys who toured with her last time. She's mixing the live album after the master of the studio. She was asked about the duet with Michael Stipe, and her answer was simply: "It's in the vaults." That's it. She mentioned one wine she likes, that she thinks will go well with the Steve Madden shoes, if you buy the red shoes: Tinto Pesquera, 1995 (a red Spanish wine). The rest of the chat was uneventful, a big disappointment. The moderator only let through about 2-3 questions that were non-shoe related. Oh well. - -jen _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
