After I got the "Ultra Rare Tori" boot, I was really thrilled to discover that it's not all bad. My first impression was that their fatal mistake was releasing "The Big Picture" as the first single. In my extremely humble opinion, it's the second-worst track on the album, right behin "Heart Attack at 23." However, the vast majority of the rest of the album is quite beautiful. "On the Boundary," "Fire on the Side," and "Etienne" all are incredibly moving. I mean, as far as lyrics go, it is really bad. The lyrics are very weak and are tori pooring her 80's aching heart out to all the "loves" of her life. They are nothing original, and nothing that really strikes anyone as wow. Also, there really isn't much to the songs as far as the accompianoment goes. They're all pretty simple. Anyways, I love it personally. I just think it is fun music. The 80's were a...differnet time for music.I love it tho. Here's more about what Tori said about the song.. "I don't find anything cutting-edge about Smack My Bitch Up," she begins, her voice raised in passion. "The thing that bugged me is that if you're going to say something, you stand by what you say. Or you just be honest and say, Look, I hit my girlfriend and that's my statement, love me or hate me. I think it's honest that all sorts of feelings come up , but you have to stand by your work as a writer. You can't say stuff that's gonna stir people up and then not be willing to stand by it." ~ Tori Amos Yes I understand what David wrote, but does anyone have the album "Killing an Arab" by the Cure? Well the Cure wrote something on the cover of the album that said something that said hey we're not racist blah blah.. Why didn't Prodigy explain that the song isn't about violence towards women on their album cover if the song is not about violence towards women? I'm not into Prodigy or anything, but I've seen the video on MTV and it just seems obvious that the song is about violence towards women from the standpoint of someone who isn't into the band enough to know it was some kind of joke... I was over at my cousin's house the other day looking at his CD single Smack Bitch Up..He's fifteen years old...He doesn't understand that song isn't talking about beating women and I bet a lot of teenage kids out there who are out there singing that song don't know that either... I think Prodigy should at least take responsibility for lyrics that they put in their songs whether it be things they wrote themselves or things they sampled from someone elses work.. As Tricia stated: <> Thanks 4 your time, *Cindy* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 18:43:59 -0700 From: "Megasusİ" Subject: Re: Etienne (was Re: Survey) GonaTwinkl@aol.com wrote: > I think one reason people think it is so bad is because a) it could NEVER > compare to the tori we know now, which is how most people know tori's work > (cause like, only 2500 (?) copies of it were ever released, it never got > airplay, and the band only performed one live gig before breaking up ((I > think. don't quote me)) ). Well, yeah. Tori's stuff since YKTR is ALOT better.. in my opinion. Some people tho think YKTR is the best thing since sliced bread, and that there hasn't been anything that great since. I like YKTR.. but it's not my favorite. Tori's stuff since then has been extremely exceptional. > and b) because it really kinda is. I mean, as far > as lyrics go, it is really bad. The 80's > were a...differnet time for music.I love it tho. The 80's were a fun time, > and this album is the epitome of 80's rock. Yeah.. the 80's were a time where music was trying to find a place again.. the 50's and 70's were a big time in music.. the 60's and 80's were the inbetween times when they tried to catch up musically with the rest of the world. YKTR is a really good 80's album in my opinion. So what if the album flopped? People were stupid in the 80's. :) Alot of new bands flopped in the 80's.. the ones that stuck around are the ones that changed their style quite a bit. I guess what I'm saying is, alot of people say YKTR is so bad, but if you look at the time it was made, it was pretty good compared to other things. At least that's what I think... it reminds me of stuff like Tiffany and Amy Grant... it's rock-ish, yet somewhat mellow.. it's soothing and fun. Overall point -- I think some people just 'agree' that YKTR 'sucks' because it didn't do very well.. if you sit down and listen to it, it's not so bad. It -is- Tori afterall.... :) - -- ^_~Megasus~_^ http://members.xoom.com/Megasus/ ICQ# 14241089 *~The Divine Princess of the Church of Daughter-chan!~* *~List Admin of the Xelloss-Lovers ML!~* "I've been raisin' up my hands, drive another nail in.. got enough guilt to start my own religion.." -Tori Amos "Just when you escape, you have yourself to fear.." -Tori Amos ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #143 *************************************
