It seems weird that Tori would tour with anyone as "big" as Alanis > anyway, in the past she's used virtually unknown acts. I've always found this strange. I can understand and respect people's opinions about music (sheesh, I certainly have enough of them), but people's hate for Alanis... I mean one can dislike her music, but to HATE her, seems very odd. She's not a mean person, she doesn't go out trying to hurt people; quite the contrary. She's often trying to heal in her songs. She does have a shrill voice when she hits those high notes, but I find her to be very self-aware and insightful. I realize that most people don't look very deeply into her music; they will hear a few songs on the radio, think "She sucks" and blow her off. But she really explores a variety of different emotions and in some ways, is her own worst critic, which I can respect. "Can't stand" seems a very strong choice of words, though I must say I have a very irrational dislike for Celine Dion. Of course, most of that stems from the fact she is as fake as they get... As for why they would be touring together, I was a little surprised as well, considering Tori's negative reaction to Lilith Fair (particularly her own participation in it). However, Alanis has always been a huge Tori fan and Tori has a lot of respect for Alanis, saying in one article that she had a lot of interesting things to say, even if her music was sonically painful at times, to paraphrase. Personally, I am very happy about the tour, I just hope they come to texas!!! Unlikely, sigh... And what do you think? Thanks, RJ>> I totally agree! I've been waiting for months to see if anyone would bring this up. I have been looking at Madonna's Ray of Light as the sort of inverse of Tori's album; Choirgirl came largely from Tori's miscarriage and Ray came largely from the birth of Madonna's child. The art et all of FTCH is very dark and melancholy, whereas the art for RoL is bright and Madonna is all glittered up. Aside from that, both albums feature a step into the electronic side of things, and both include some of the most prominent displays of guitars in either artist's career. Plus, if you consider Merman as a thirteenth track for Choirgirl [and i do], both albums are the same length and end in the song Mer[man/girl]. Wierd, huh??? In other thoughts... * i was also pondering whether this tour would be a solo or Caton-only outing. Then again, a lot of the Beesides are full band songs [Sugar, Honey, Mary...]. And do you think she'll change up the set [ie: Precious Things and Waitress] very much from the plugged tour, or will this be essentially the same? * has anyone contemplated why Tori didn't use the band for Take to the Sky? Seems darn silly to me... * i did a presentation on the evolution of the folk song in my Global Perspectives class, and my centerpiece was Tori's nite-to-nite improvs, especially in Waitress, which i played three different versions of. * Alanis and Tori have been my two favorite concerts of all time [other than David Bowie, but since he's a living legend i can hardly hold him up against the gals (:], and i am personally psyched beyond belief to see them both in one venue. okay, back into lurk mode for me... - -krisis http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/4755/ PS: has there been any thought of a CDR tree for Storyteller's? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 13:51:32 -0500 (CDT) From: Serra Angel Subject: Re: upcoming tour thoughts... opening/main On Wed, 21 Apr 1999 Emilita3@aol.com wrote: > > I apologize if this has already been mentioned cause I haven't yet sorted > through the masses of mail on this thread, but one thing that occured to me > was that Alanis opened for Liz Phair not too long ago, and I think Liz is not > bigger than Tori really, I actually kind of see her as comparable in fame, > but I could be wrong there. Just a thought. Any Liz fans out there? > > Emily > *raises hand emphatically* ME ME!! I think Liz is a lot older than Alanis, which could lend to her being the headliner... also Liz has three albums and Alanis only hads two. If she let Liz go last, then Tori will definitely go last (Tori has 4 almost 5 albums out)... besides the fact Alanis is a very humble person and I doubt she would want to steal any of Tori's spotlight, considering Tori was such a big influence for her. On the other hand, I could see Tori letting Alanis go second... we're also disounting whatever the record companies have to say about all this. They may insist Tori go second to ensure album sales. I know I've already commented on this, but I would like to say cheers to Richard for pointing out the fan crossover thing. I think both women have a lot to say, and sure Alanis isn't as`"deep" (whatever that means) as Tori.. which I think translates more to sophistication. If fans are drawn to Alanis' probings on relationships, religion, relations with parents and family, etc, then they will eat up Tori if exposed to it. Howver, Alanis is a lot more accessible lyrically, while Tori can baffle people if they don't really think about what she is sayign (and oftentimes, know her background, read interviews, etc.) As far as sophistication goes, though, I find Alanis' new album the difference between high school and college. It was rebellion, thought, sadness, reflection, and disillusionment in Jagged Little Pill. Whereas, Infatuation is all about moving on, experimentation, separating yourself from those influences that had a hold on you. Musically it is a much more interesting album, with lots of neurotic, unsettling melodies, whereas Jagged was much more accessible. I will say (and will probably get flamed for this) that Alanis is a better COMMUNICATER than Tori, in that she is extremely eloquent in describing her feelings in ways that are complex, but easy to understand. Whereas Tori is more about experience and feeling... you may not understand the specifics of the references in her lyrics, but you understand the basic FEELING she's conveying... which I think deters a lot of people. They feel intimidated and condescended to (I certainly did before I really listened!)...which really is more of a challenge than Alanis presents. Their careers are very similar though, both having put out a record initially that was based more on style than depth (Alanis' dance-pop album, Tori's YKTR).. then they broke through that, writing albums about how they REALLY feel, how they are scared to be this open, but here's the story of my life (JLP, LE), and they each got more experimental and complex (SFIJ, everything after LE)... I don't find it strange at all they should be paired together, though I am surprised Tori went for it. Anyway enough babble :) Kahlan ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #120 *************************************
