Singer/Musician Tori Amos, whose album "from the choirgirl hostel" was recorded last year in her studio near Bude, will be bringing her collection of "girls" to Truro this May Day. No, the "girls" aren't her backing singers, they're her songs. "My songs are definitely beings--I see them as females, even though a lot might be boys, you know, lady boys. They're all different, but incredibly loved and this year they've all managed to band together to form this fabulous choir. We've woven all the B-sides from my four albums into a tapestry--I suppose they've woven it themselves, really--this rich flowing carpet of joy, sorrow, energy, and rejoicing." Ms. Amos is most famous for her pounding piano rock and immense vocal energy, first heard on these shores with her 1991 release, Little Earthquakes. Four albums and thousands of tour dates later, she has assembled a new album of live and remixed studio versions of her non- album songs. Those are the B-sides, songs loved very dearly by her most dedicated fans. Some go to great lengths to buy rare or limited edition singles just to hear them. "That's the real reason we've done this project. We want people to have access to the music, and to breathe some new life into these songs that are central to Tori's live concert experience, but which didn't make the main albums. It's always a source of regret," says her sound engineer, and husband, Mark. "B's in my Bosendorfer" is released by East/West records in June. Tickets for the Saturday 1 May "B-B Queen Tour" date at £14, go on sale at the box office today, 1 April 1999. - -- Ken Tough ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 05:32:53 -0500 (EST) From: Richard Handal Subject: Tori tour? Yes, seemingly. Hello, Folks: [I'm going to post a version of this on ToriNews and RDT(RN), too.] I'm sorry I can't quote any sources on this. Feel free to blow off this post for lack of accountability. I won't be naming names in private either, so it would be best for folks not to ask me where I heard all this. I heard different parts of and/or pieced together all of the following tidbits from different places--*many* *reliable* places. Actually, I'm astonished at the number of completely unrelated sources I have on this thing. I seem to have a pretty good reputation around here and I wouldn't risk it by talking about this if I felt unsure of my sources. When the rumors of a tour got to be too much to ignore a few days ago I started doing some digging with various sources I have who are close to different parts of this thing, and I've come to some conclusions about what *seems* to be in the works. Basically, there *are* some *fairly* definite plans for there to be a tour of around two months duration to promote the next album. Atlantic is looking for a September/October release date on the album, possibly as late as November but they're hoping it won't be that late. The tour would probably begin about two weeks before the record is released, so until a hard date for the album release is fixed, the tour's start and end dates will probably remain tentative as well. Assuming the accuracy of a post from a couple days ago on Precious Things is correct and there are plans for Tori to play in the Riverport Amphitheatre in St. Louis, this won't be a small-venue club tour, although in the bigger metropolitan areas I wouldn't be surprised to see some venues larger than that, such as the arenas in which she performed last year. (That's personal speculation on my part.) Whether any countries outside of North America are to be included in this is nothing about which I've heard any information. This tour was not Tori's idea, clearly, as she told multiple friends of mine near the end of the previous tour that she did not intend to tour in support of this upcoming record, and Joel was apparently telling folks she probably wouldn't tour again until 2001, if not 2002. I'll leave it to you to figure out the impetus behind this likely tour. The record will be two discs: one live and one with b-sides, with possibly some previously unreleased stuff which Tori held back from, say, Pele. Tori wanted three discs, Atlantic wants two. I think that's dumb, but who am *I*. That's all I "know" now. I imagine it's gonna be AT LEAST a few weeks if not ten or twelve weeks before a release date for this live/b-sides record becomes solid, so we're likely to be up in the air about most tour details until AT LEAST around then, and most of the folks who might come to know more about this as time passes are unlikely to tell what they know publicly before an official announcement is made. As I expressed recently in a post on Precious Things, I think that sitting on information is bullshit unless someone's specific confidence is being broken. My personal feelings about this are that I'm not ready for a tour, and it's hard to imagine I *will* be ready for it as early as it's likely to happen--but who knows. To me, she toured to support choirgirl, the band grew into a tight unit over the course of time, the music continued to improve as the tour progressed (which is why Tori was expecting most of the live tracks on the album to be from the last three incredible weeks of the plugged tour), and then the tour came to an end. A brief tour which would be pretty much the same as the plugged '98 tour *does* seem redundant to me. Is there much else that can be said in that vein musically-- especially with the same band members, with whom it *appears* the tour will be conducted? Since this is April first I feel I have to add a disclaimer: This is NOT an April Fools joke. I'm completely serious about all of this. One last thing. If anyone has any bright ideas how I can see all the shows on this tour and make money while doing it, I'd love to hear about it. Hey--*I'm* not proud. :-) And now, I'm going to try to relax about this and wait until things solidify. Good luck to all of us. You know, if this rumor does end up being valid, I'm gonna have to say that I understand the logic. Yes, Tori went through a lot physically . . . who wouldn't? But, she did have her husband on tour, who's job is that of a sound engineer, and she had her brothers backing her up. As an actor, I know how hard it is to give up something that you've been doing for months - working on it and always improving on it, spending your days with a wonderful group of people. She and Mark are possibly pretty idle and miss being on the road. Anyway, just another angle to think about, becky ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 15:48:24 -0500 From: "strange as angels" Subject: rumors about Canada, also? I think she was interviewed by Hot Press a couple of times. I have one hotpress magazine with Tori on the cover. You don't want to have > to go through the chatter of tour "stuff"? Hell, I'd like to > experience it for once. Oh, if you were reading the lists a year ago you heard plenty of chatter about the tour. If, in anticipation of a tour for the next six months we get three pointless posts per day asking if anyone knows anything would they please send in info, that's 540 posts total! I should think everyone would want to avoid that. I'm hoping those kinds of posts don't see light of day, though, so maybe it'll be all right. I never mentioned this publicly before, but it's late enough after the fact that I feel okay about doing it. I was waiting at the Letterman studios when Tori arrived for the soundcheck the day of the first ever public appearance with the band, April 9, 1998. She saw me and came over, and we spoke for a minute or two. After I told her how I felt about the songs I'd heard from the as yet unreleased album and we talked briefly about something else, I asked her if she was going to tour Australia on that tour. Her response: "We're going to try." My two points are that plans can change even though the intentions may be there; and that I feel your pain. It genuinely hurts me that folks in so much of the world didn't get a chance to see her last year, and I spent irreplacable moments talking with her trying to get something out of her I could post to give hope to you folks in Oz. I asked her if I could have her comment for the record, and she must have thought I was asking her to repeat what she'd just said into a recorder because she touched her throat and said something about a problem with her voice, so I didn't manage to get her permission to tell folks about that. And of course, it turned out that she didn't make it to Oz, anyhow. I've said many times that I've been incredibly lucky and blessed to have been able to have seen an insane number of shows. I admit that. Nothing would make me happier than if Tori toured Australia again.
