The beginning of Precious Things. I was very surprised but I thought it was the coolest thing. The show was Foxfiles. They just played the beginning piano intro over and over again. She started to sing a little, but then they cut to the beginning again. It was a segment about sex in college. They played PT while a woman talked about when she got raped, which is fitting I suppose. Well, maybe not the song, but the fact that it was Tori. With the Skeeter thing, I really don't know much about it, but I was watching the Video collection with a friend a few months ago. She's not a total fan, but she likes tori. Anyways, when the Skeeter thing came up, she said something about Skeeter being a Muppet Baby from that cartoon. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but the fact that it might be a nickname for her baby and Skeeter is a Muppet Baby might mean something. Okay, just thought I'd throw that in. :-) Jeremy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 23:33:26 EST From: Freque79@aol.com Subject: Re: Sister Janet In a message dated 3/22/99 10:30:19 PM Central Standard Time, ChaosSong@aol.com writes: > Sister Janet is easily one of my all time favorites. I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but interesting... In the March issue of Q magazine (with Shirley Manson on the cover), there is an interview with Alanis Morissette. Readers sent in their own questions and one of them is as follows: Q: Tori Amos said Jagged Little Pill would make a dog's ears hurt. Is that a crushing disappointment since she was your saviour? A: I didn't really consider her my saviour, but I was very inspired by her. Inspired by her empowerment through her vulnerability. I'm still a fan of hers, I'll always be a fan. Everyone has their own opinion. Whether they love my record or hate it, I just think being in the public eye and sharing music is an amazing way for people to define themselves and we define ourselves in accordance. We define who we are by what we love and what we hate. People loving it or hating it, I just take it in the same way. Other people's relationship to what I do doesn't really affect me that much, although I love inspiring people or [laughs] repulsing them. So, I'm pretty sure that Tori quote was a mis-quote, but, nevertheless, I think Alanis handled it very well and very graciously. Could someone please provide any quotes Tori has regarding Alanis Morissette, and/or resolve the issue of the above quote? I know it's been a little while since I made this post and everyone sent their responses, but thanks to all who answered my question about the Tori lyric... I can't believe I made such a dorky mistake, but everyone was very nice and didn't make me feel like an idiot. ;) Thanks you guys! I'd just like to post a ~special~ thank you to Lissa, who has made TWO most genius posts in the past few days. And yes, believe it or not folks, the one was written in the early morning. =) First of all, your recent comments about the piano being so important in Tori's music was VERY interesting because I thought I was the only one that gave it that much importance. For example, the musical arrangement of the song LE is VITAL to that song- it's amazing. The music itself actually IS a little earthquake, because it begins with just a slow yet steady motion, the beat being almost a pre-tremor of sorts, or some kinda foreshadowing. Then the music reaches it's height with the "I can't reach you...," where the real earthquake kicks in. Afterwards, "give me life, give me pain..." is sorta the aftershock, leaving the final part of the song to serve as the quiet and almost overwhelming peace following such an extreme event. Does anyone think I have a valid point here, or am I just overanalyzing? Naturally, the feeling that comes from the entire song- words and all- is what's important, I just think it's interesting. Anyways, back to the other post I'd like to thank Lissa for- your Tour Story was very beautiful. I really appreciate hearing that; it was kinda moving and stuff. Made me smile anyways. =) On the BfP thread... this album was probably the hardest for me to connect with. I really had a struggle with some of the songs on the record (Little Amsterdam, Horses if you can believe it...), but I have certainly come to appreciate it as a GREAT record. I don't think by any means that this isn't a good album. I mean, even if you like it less than anything else Tori's done, it's STILL a great album. Here's the order in which I like 'em (for the week): LE, CGH, BfP, UtP. The order usually remains the same, but BfP and CGH tend to swap places depending on my mood. Anyways, for those of you who think BfP isn't great, where would Tori be without Proffessional Widow? How about Hey Jupiter? How about Voodoo? The list goes on; I think you know what I mean. BfP is a wonderful album, hard for some to reach, and the most understandable to others. Last, but certainly not least, I think that the HJ remix is awesome. I can't really think of another word, except maybe beautiful, breathtaking, and captivating. I can see where some people would think that it was a change from the wonderful album version, but the remix is wonderful in its own way. Have you guys ever heard "Over It"? From the first moment I heard it, I became entranced by it. I think that is one of the most powerful and moving songs ever writen by Tori. I practically start crying to this day, every time I hear it. I cannot honestly say what why it affects me so, but somehow it seems to be descriptive of all my feelings which I cannot put to words. That is why it works: I can't physically use words to describe some of my thoughts or feelings, and "Over It" does the same through the piano. Furthermore, the piece is simply ingenious, musically speaking. Anyway, this is just one example of a time when I could see how the two could separate and work perfectly. There is one song of Paula's that I get so irritated at the end of it (she's is wailing, and wailing, and wailing), I scream "Shut Up" before hitting "skip". Yet at times, she is also unsure and she wants her mother to be there for her, and she wants to be able to come running home ("somebody leave the light on")--she's kinda saying hey dont leave me in the dark here, i know you still want me around!! I also think that the mother in the song is sort of throwing it in the girls face when she does come home (" dont cry, you raised your hand for the assignment") yet at the same time wants her daughter to be independent. I think the line "poison me against the moon" is a major reference to female sexuality. Sometimes mothers (esp. in the 50s i believe) didn't really talk to thier daughters opening about sexual things, and made it seem sinful, and really emphasized modesty. the moon is a sort of a representation of 'woman' (the sun being male) so i think that the line is tori's railing against the fact that sexuality was made to be a sinful thing and not elevated to be something beautiful.
