I was a little upset and my tone was a tad inappropriate. I should have put a little more effort into expressing my thoughts without being so hostile. > statements regarding bfp;i don't necessarily > look at the song's "I" as tori.i was just confused by the way tori changes > perspectives from talking in third or > second person, and ends up in first. This is a very hard thing to grasp. It was for me, and I'm a native English speaker. I can imagine that for those people who have learned English as a second (or even third or fourth) language that Tori's tense shifts can be confusing. I think, though, that from what Tori continues to say in her interviews (this happened a LOT, especially when Choirgirl was released) is that the songs are NOT autobiographical. > now, everything you write is ,at one point,autobiographical,-cause > it,simply, comes from your head.but, you can make the most saddest-hopeless > song ever written for,and inspired by,your boyfriend with who you have ,like > ,the most understanding and happiest relationship. This is where it comes to channeling the muse. As I understand it (both from Tori's words and my own experiences with it) the muse visits with a story, or a situation that must be examined. However, we can only examine that situation, or tell that story based on what WE, the conduit, have experienced. Thus, Spark gives us insight into what it takes to make a person whole. Is it about the miscarriage? It touches on it, yes, but I think it's vastly unfair to sum up the song into such a neat little package. > i strongly believe tori's lyrics can be interpreted in million levels and > layers;that's the beauty of it,tori doesn't ,actually, know what the song is > *about* in the moment she's writing it.channeling I think here you've hit the nail exactly on the head. Tori has mentioned that the songs, her girls, don't really come into their own until she has played them live and let them grow. We have seen some girls - Precious Things and The Waitress, for example, grow from the shy but angry little one with something to say to full grown women who stand up for themselves and make themselves known. And we have seen some songs (Baker Baker, Pretty Good Year, Bells For Her) flesh out and blossom. However, I digress. Everyone will have their own interpretation of a song. Our different life experiences guarentee that. Let's just take a moment and examine other possible meanings before assuming that a literal, autobiographical approach is the best that we can come up with. Keith S. Expect to pay around $100 for a vinyl or CD in good condition. {Promos are worth less than commercial releases here, there are more promos and cut-outs than commercial non-cut-outs.} As for the tape, the sky's the limit. Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 18:25:36 -0600 (CST) From: Serra Angel Subject: BfP progression I'm trying to piece together the pattern of the songs on BfP and this is what I think of the first few. Let me know what you guys think! Beauty Queen - nostalgia, melancholy, regret for who she used to be.. this ties in with Talula "Say goodbye to the glitter grrrl" Horses - this song always felt so clean and sequential.. it feels like numbing, like anesthesia. Freeform nostalgia, some regret in there, some hope "if Neil makes me a tree"... and having some Horses to ride on is in better shape than she was in "Winter", where theyd all passed her up. So she's lost Eric, but there are opportunities for her to move on, the horses have come for her at last, and I think in the form of these songs. Blood Roses - The real juice of the matter. The pain of betrayal, and sacrifice for love. The feeling of being used up and bitter. Woman is merely a vehicle for pleasure, with the blood roses and the bound feet. Tori seems to be sympathisizng here, but then you realize it's about her too "I shaved every place where you've BEEN boy". No more numb, this cannot be held back. Father Lucifer - back into nostalgia, with a bit of whimsy. Teasing her dark side, accepting it into the family, "How're the Lizzies? How's your Jesus Christ been hanging?" as if this is normal catching up talk. The song is very comforting "eat pizza and never gain weight" but unsettling at the same time. Provocative without confrontation. PW - Where is her place now without with relationship? She has to produce her own album, has to sell herself, has to become the ball-busting bitch. She is invoking Courtney here, as someone else pointed out, but she is recognizing it in herself. She's taking the reins and looking for new meat "Give me peace and a hard cock." She's in her Waitress mood, taking no prisoners. Mr. Zebra - she's feeling playful after her confidence with PW.. but as we see with the unresolved ending that leads into Marianne, things are notquite right in this fairy tale land: "Too bad her burial was premature, she said, and smiled" Marianne - Confidence is all very well, but what about the loss of innocence and beauty? You can be cynical and ruthless, but inside is this flowering child, and she invokes Marianne here to draw new life to her. The sadness is clear, as if she is going through the cycle again of new love, but she already knows the pain of loss going into it. CALS - She runs out and seeks new boys to steal the fire from (one in particular, we think)... everything is extremes for Tori, and she wants the flu, but somehow Marianne has gone wrong, the magic isn't there, and everything is falling apart without the foundation of that special other whom she has lost. Was Tori ever on Storytellers in the past? Tori was on Storytellers a few years ago (I don't remember the exact dates). This is the session where she performed a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire" which was released as a radio promo at one point and appears on the Storytellers CD. Hope this helps!
