What you're quoting is from the _Collectibles_ book, which says that there are approximately ten -in circulation-. "In circulation" is very different than how many were made. "In circulation" means that, at the time of the printing of that book, there were ten copies of the vinyl that were -known- to be in the hands of collectors. Actually, it's not that surprising that more copies have turned up. I think it's a safe assumption that more than 10 were actually made -- usually print runs are in increments of 500 or 1000 {there's no reason to do only ten, the cost differential between 10 and 500 is trivial -- the biggest expense is setting up the equipment to press the CD, but once you've got it going, the cost of the materials is next to nothing}. When someone who's had something like that finds out that it's rare as all hell and they have no use for it {IE they lived in Baltimore at the time, got it from a friend or even one of the Amoses, never listened to it}, they're going to get rid of it. When one sells for a large sum, more tend to enter the market because people didn't know that they had this rarity sitting in their basement that's worth $1000 or more. So yes, be careful. But I don't think that these are bootlegs. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 16:16:44 EST From: NerrrdGirl@aol.com Subject: marianne and angie dickenson who is angie dickinson from putting the damage on and what significance does it have to the song? also, is marianne a real person? Some of you know that I live in Germany. However, I spent last week in California on a business trip (and I might actually end up to live there within the next months if some things turn out well) - and just before leaving again, I spotted a Tori picture in a magazine at a newsstand on the San Francisco airport. To my big surprise it was not another music magazine - it was Wine X, a magazine dedicated to wine and lifestyle. In this magazine (Dec-Jan '99), you will find an interview with Tori (as well as pictures from the interview and some other pictures that I had already seen elsewhere before) that was done before last year's show in San Diego. In the interview Tori reveals her attitude towards wine and some experiences that are related to wine. She likes California's Silver Oak '92 and is 'really getting into Chablis' while she 'had started out with Chardonnay'. Another interesting part is: 'I don't buy flashy cars. I don't buy watches. I don't buy jewelry. I'm not into all that. I paid my house off. I did it because I'm so nervous about losing it all. I've been working since I was thirteen years old. It's about balance - it's being able to spend some and still have some.' I guess we will all try to make sure that this woman who gives us so much will never 'lose it all'. For all we know, there are 400 of them in Tori's attic. This happens a lot when a local band or artist presses a record, and no one buys it. Usually you have to press records in fairly large quantities (most places will do 500, although some will press only 100, but charge more), so there are lots of copies, just not floating around. And i've noticed with eBay that often when someone puts something rare up, and it goes for a lot of money, other people with that same item get the idea and put it up for sale. So i don't think it's too weird that two Baltimores should come up for sale within the same time period. That being said, i wouldn't bid on either of these. :) -=-laurie <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> the one person who really knows me best says i'm like a cat the kind of cat that you just can't pick up and throw into your lap no, the kind that doesn't mind being held only when it's her idea yeah, the kind that feels what she decides to feel when she good and ready to feel it -=-ani d ani da <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 22:56:26 -0500 From: Jenelle Campion Subject: Re: Album Covers/The Album Progression Another way to look at the dircetional thing is by elements. if you think in terms that Le=earth UTP=Air BFP=Fire FCH=Water and since in pagan systems of belif earth=north air=east fire=south water=west then you can assume LE=North UTP=east BFP=south FCH=west Its just another way to think about it, thats all. It may not be what Tori "meant" when she wrote the song, but it's still valid. 2) "Jackie" is Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis, the wife of John F. Kennedy. "Mama laid me on the front lawn" is exactly what happened when Tori's mom found out about the assassination of JFK: she laid her young daughter down on the lawn and prayed. Many people, after his death, watched Jackie and drew upon her strength. She was incredible during that time period, and many say that the country could not have gotten through that period so well were it not for Jackie Kennedy. In the beginning of the song, Tori talks about praying that Jackie would have the strength to get through this tragedy. Towards the end, though, she's praying that -she- has the strength that Jackie showed. Note: "she" here doesn't necessarily have to mean "Tori", it's just convenient. Just because a song is written in first person doesn't mean that the singer is intending themselves to be that person. I believe more in (1) than in (2). You don't have to know what a song "means" to get your own meaning out of it. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Feb 1999 21:36:44 EST From: Freque79@aol.com Subject: Re: Why did he say "what will Tori Amos do now" In a message dated 2/2/99 6:12:52 PM Central Standard Time, robinfairy@yahoo.com writes: > aah! (from the song marianne) Maryanne Curtis was a girl who Tori went to junior high school with who died of a drug overdose when she was 16. By all accounts (and I know a number of people who went to junior high with Maryanne and Tori), she was an amazing, beautiful person. People who knew her back then still strongly and fondly remember Maryanne to this day, even if they never heard of Tori's song about her. Here's what Tori said about Maryanne on the WHFS radio program "Just Passin' Thru," which originally aired on February 11, 1996. You really have to hear the depth of feeling in her voice to get the full impact of it, but here's a transcript of what Tori said about Maryanne in that radio interview: "Umm, Maryanne came to visit me--the spirit of Maryanne. Maryanne Curtis was a girl that I went to school with. And uh, some say she killed herself, some say she died over an O.D. I choose to believe that Maryanne just umm--to me she was kind of like a young Mary Magdalene. She... it just wasn't... the world couldn't *hold* her anymore, it couldn't, umm, understand her energy." "I think anybody that knew Maryanne, would tell you that she reflected the best parts of you back. So when you'd look into Maryanne's eyes, yes, of course she was beautiful, but *you* felt beautiful, because Maryanne never hated *any*thing--*any*body. And so when she died, you felt like this thing that reflected the best part of **you**, had died. So for Maryanne to come back again, was umm... it was uh... like the second coming for me, really." _____________________________________________________________________ Here's something which was printed about Maryanne. It was in the fan magazine Upside Down, Issue #4, from 1994 in the QT section on page 22-- The interviewer asked: "Who is Maryanne, mentioned in 'Sister Janet'?" Tori replied: "Maryanne Curtis is a girl I went to school with in junior high. She was the kind of person everyone adored, she was just magical. I had written a song about her years ago which I used to play in the bars sometimes. It never went any further than being performed, I didn't record it. Since then I have always wanted to have Maryanne in a song. She died from a drug overdose when she was 15. It is not known, but I don't believe it was a suicide. I think she took the wrong things together. She is very special to me, and comes to visit in my songs sometimes." Maryanne's death served as a major wake-up call to a lot of girls who knew her and were, like Maryanne, doing a lot of drugs. Maybe it still can. Tori's song is a wonderful memorial to sweet Maryanne. People now who never knew her feel warmly toward her. Tori did that. Tori is an astonishing person. If you have ever seen her on any interviews, you'd see she is _obviously_ a devoting, loyal, loving wife. I think that's the significance of her name being in the song "Putting the Damage On". I always took it the song was about Eric leaving Tori and how she was hoping he would see how loving and devoted she could be and was to him so that he wouldn't leave her. Thus, putting on her "best impression of (my ) best Angie Dickinson". I hope that helps _.-'''-._ 14 McDaniel Dr. Box 2110 .' .-'``|'.
