The Little Mermaid sold her voice to be human (i.e., what is widely accepted, something she wasn't, trying to be a guitar, y'know) and that's what Tori's talking about. That even though she's sitting there wearing jeans, she's something else. She still hears her voice despite the fact that she sold it long ago. But her voice is still there underneath. :) That's how I think it is...and she also has the quote about sounding like the Little Mermaid on acid. :) Erin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 19:33:44 -0800 From: Frederica Rose Subject: Re: Bt?Pet?Neil? maxine must be missing a bt cd because i have a two cd set that is not an import or even hard to find and blue skies is most definitely on it. i also have a couple of singles. love, freddie Maxine wrote: > Hi! > > I can answer your first question about BT. IOW, if Tori signs a band to Igloo, Atlantic is still the ones who make the discs and such. There is only one band on Tori's label, named Pet. To quote from the authorized biography, _All These Years_, by Kalen Rogers: - -*- begin quote -*- Tori's friendship with Neil Gaiman, the author of _Sandman_, DC Comics' fantastically popular and unusual series, began in a slightly less direct fashion. After including a reference to Neil and to the Dream King, the main character in the _Sandman_ series, in "Tear in Your Hand", Tori had a friend deliver a tape of the song to Neil at a San Diego comic convention. Neil, who receives many tapes from fans which he says usually "magically become blank tapes" remembers, "I listened to the first three or four tracks, and I was in love. It wasn't _Little Earthquakes_, it was sort of half of _Little Earthquakes_ and half what wound up being B-sides -- things like 'Flying Dutchman' and 'Take to the Sky' and 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Upside Down'. But it was very obvious that musically I was a fan by the time I'd finished listening to the first few tracks. In fact it was ages before I spotted the 'me and Neil'll be hangin' out with the Dream King Neil says hi by the way' -- that came much later." After listening to the tape, Neil, who lived in London, called Tori up, and the first of many wonderful conversations commenced. Tori now insists that the two knew each other in a past life. Neil states, "we were old friends immediately. Whether you want to view that as fact or metaphor, that is very much true." ... Gaiman has since used Tori's song lyrics and quotes from their discussions in the _Sandman_ series, and one of the main characters, Delirium, has taken on more than a few mental and physical attributes of Tori's. Neil says, "Delirium was created before I met Tori, but they steal shamelessly from each other." - -*- end quote -*- Neil and Tori haven't been romantically involved. Neil is, IIRC, rather married. :) Most questions like this are answered in the Tori FAQ, available on the rmta website at in the FAQs there. If you want to print up pictures with Tori's likeness on them, you need permission from the person who took the picture as well as Tori's management. If you're using a fan's picture, getting that permission should be trivial; but if you want to use something more "professional" {like something from a single or one of the books}, it'll be next to impossible. Getting permission from Tori's management is a big ole pain in the ass. Trust me on this. :) That said, ToriCon [1] wrangled permission from her management to use her picture on their tee-shirts until ToriCon ceases to exist. The main organizer of ToriCon usually lets those who are printing up shirts say they're with ToriCon so they fall under our umbrella permission. We know that her management is hard to deal with, and the main organizer screens those requests {they can't be personal money-making ventures}, so she figures it's best for all involved to do it this way. PT 5. Nov.12 Rochester We arrived in Rochester after a 2 hour and a half sleep... We were outside the venue at 4 am?? I don't know.. I really wanted to see Tori and talk to her if possible... but sitting in the cold at 4-6 am I don't even remember... but anyway it was really too much for me so I said I'd go sleep in the car. It turned out that they too decided it was crazy that we all stayed out there so minutes later, Richard came to sleep in the car too. After two hours of sleep it was our "waiting shift" so we went there and waited for two hours and later on that morning our friends from the previous concerts started to arrive. I was number ONE for the M&G yes my friends gave me No. one even if I took the second shift there. :) So after hanging out in front of the venue, going in the YMCA ocassionally to go to the bathroom... I guess I should let Jessen write about the bathroom experience :-) His stories were much more fun. So we hung out there, we drew on Jessen's book, we talked and talked and talked... until Steve... my unlucky charm.. came and told us there wasn't going to be a M&G. This time I got pretty frustrated. Rurik and Linda can tell.. I wasn't even saying the famous spanish sentence... My bad luck in terms of M&G kept growing... I've had No.2, No.4, No.1... and No.18... the only time that we had a M&G was when I was 18 and the barricade was so damn narrow only 6 people fit there... so yes I had to release some energy, so I run a couple blocks. After that people disbanded and Linda, Rurik and me went to the hotel to do laundry... We also made a stop at a record store were I found 4 singles I didn't have .. and some posters I should've bought. We went back to the venue and stood in line for a couple hours so we could get tickets. None of us had tickets so we were hoping for some seats. The theatre was beautiful, but our seats were the worst we had, since out Tori tour started. We were at the 18th row on the left. We couldn't see Jon during the whole set. We tried to walk closer to the stage but the security people prevented us form doing so. The show was great, but I was still hyper from the show the day before so this one seemed to be more quiet... the energy I can't describe it. I do remember Tori saying "Wait, I fucked up. I'm sorry, I fucked up." and then starting over Past the Mission. We were all laughing and then she altered the lyrics to a "I don't belive I just did that". Too cute. It was a big surprise to hear "Famous Blue Raincoat".. especially after all that happened to Jeremy the day before with those girls.. I guess that Jeremy's story was read by Tori and it gave her some hints on what to play at this show :-) As I lost all my hopes to see Tori before a show, that afternoon, I wrote a little note and put it in a parcel with a CD I had brought for her. Right after the last song Rurik and I decided to give the M&G a try, so we run to the barricades. We weren't in such a good place so I handed my parcel to Michael who as *always* got to the first row. So Rurik handed him the parcel and we stayed there in 5th and 6th row, until a father (that fell from heaven) came looking for his daughters who were right in front of us. Magically Rurik ended up in second row and I was right behind him. Actually there was a really short girl in betwween him and the person in first row...I guess being taller than her was the bsat that could have happened. Mr.Puppethead made several appearences through a window, and each time he got quite an ovation. When Tori came out Rurik gave me his place so I could get a chance to talk to Tori. That was just so nice of him. I just don't have enough words to thank him. What was about to happen is one of the most memorable moments and as I scribbled somewhere "Fuckin' A!!! this is one of the best days of my life".... So I was there in (almost) second row and I didn't want to scream at her to get her attention.... So I handed her over my ticket stub for my first concert...(Pittsburgh on my 25th birthday) and when she handed it back to me I murmured: "I hope you like the CD I brought for you" T-"what honey" she said while getting closer and making a face like "speak up I can't hear you" so I said " I I I hopppe you you like the the CD I brought for for you" T-"what is it" "it's a Tango CD" T- "what CD?" "a Tango (now pronnunced with and american accent :-) ) CD I hope you like it. T- (silence) she just stared at me for a couple seconds and then her face lit up and she had this big smile and said "OOHH YOU ARE **HER**!!!" and she walked a couple steps back and blew a kiss at me in a way I can't describe... but I was just so astonished by the fact she remembered I was coming.. I don't remember exactly what she said to me.. but the last part of the "conversation" was her asking me if the CD was backstage and I said that Michael had it and pointed at him... she gave me a big wave goddbye and talked to Michael .. I am still smiling... everytime I remember that moment I can't hold back the smiles. So Richard you are guilty for all that happened there.. :-) I mean thank you for letting her know I was coming to see her :-) Anyhow.. even though she doesn't know my name or whatever... I *am* "HER" :-D So, I am thanking everyone for everything that day...I guess then, I should also thank the India buffet for some great spicy food :-) One more thing... during one afternoon in Rochester I learnt that there were 3 more concerts that weren't that far away from were we were going to be.. meaning poughkeepsie. So I figured I could wait a couple days to go to NY and visit with my cousin.... I talked to Linda and Richard and *YAY* they say they'd go too :-) So I came to the US thinking of seeing 2 shows and I had already seen 5... and there were 5 more to come!!!!!!!!!! woooooooooohoooooooooooooo... No luck at pre show M&G but I *cant* complain about anything else... well I didn't get one of the Tori trademark hugs.... but hey... someother EWF that needed more than me probably got it :-) gnight, besos HER :-)                \\|//                (O-O) - ----------oOO--(_)--OOo------------------------------------------------- ldamico@adinet.com.uy (at home) laura@redfacil.com.uy (at work) http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/lot/3373/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:47:47 -0500 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: BT+ ima At 11:43 PM 1/27/99 -0500, Talulagrl1@aol.com wrote: > >please dont flame this. >and no disrespect. >but i dont think that tori would like. >her music played in strip clubs. >thoughts? Since the "Winter" single is still - -very- commonly available more than 6 years after its release, it's about as rare as your average cockroach. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:07:04 EST From: XMN93@aol.com Subject: Purple People In a message dated 1/25/99 10:32:42 PM Eastern Standard Time, robgueli@sprintmail.com writes: << does anyone know the story behind 'purple people', 'bachelorette' or any others? >> ummm, ok, "purple people." i tell EVERYONE this interpretation to everybody, but that's only because people think that "purple people" is about like, aliens, and that's just wrong (i know Tori has said her songs are open to interpretations, but still...). you know how when baby's are born they are slightly miscolored, like a blue purplish? well i'm guessing during a miscarriage this is amplified, so Tori is singing about all the lost babies. and in the part, "if i marooned o'er where the purple people go" she's questioning where her baby's spirit is. I think the song was made up as she was playing it for the first time because i remeber reading something about the "hey do you do judo" part coming from a girlfriend's childhood, but anyway, i thought i'd toss my thought on it to you guys and see what you had to say... luke ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:31:39 -0500 From: Beth Coulter Subject: Re: BT+ ima At 11:43 PM 1/27/99 EST, Talulagrl1@aol.com wrote: > >please dont flame this. >and no disrespect. >but i dont think that tori would like. >her music played in strip clubs. >thoughts? > > I think Tori would love it! When playing the bars in and around DC, she made friends with hookers and found them to be excellent people. Tori believes in extreme tolerance for everyone. There is no one path to take, there are many, and whether one makes their money singing, or writing, or stripping, it doesn't matter. I think Tori would most whole heartedly approve. just my opinion, of course. Y Kant Tori Read is the name of the band and the album. Many bands do a self-titled release, especially as their first one. A legitimate copy of the album goes for $100 and up these days. However, bootlegs of it abound, and they're commonly available on CD for $20-$30. I'd be happy to make a cassette copy of YKTR for you for the cost of the blank tape and shipping. My complete list is at . {Since this offer is posted publicly, it's open to everyone, and it's not limited to just YKTR. I do newbie trades for any tape on my list. I'm also open to trades, and have around 400 cassettes to trade.} /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:54:09 -0500 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: eBay At 11:31 PM 1/27/99 +0000, Ray wrote: >I don't know about all of the CD's on eBay, but some of the CD's that are >auctioned off there aren't CDR. Many of the bootlegs auctioned off on eBay are CD-Rs. They may originally have been pressed CDs {such as the "Under the Covers" you referenced}, but unless the advertisement says that you're getting the actual commercial bootleg, you're probably getting a CD-R copy. If you're bidding on something like that and it's not specified, it's best to email the buyer to ensure which it is. Most bootlegs aren't worth terribly much more than the $20-$30 that a single new CD commercial boot fetches. Some have increased in value, including "Tori Stories" {the original issue, not the icky reprints} and "Dew Drop Inn Boulder". For the most part, though, commercial bootlegs don't increase in value -- this was true before CD-Rs became available, and is doubly true now. /nad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 20:34:56 -0600 From: "David Mobley" Subject: RE: Album Covers > I want to commend that person on that! Anyway, just a few > thoughts... let me know if any of this makes sense. you know, personally I'm wondering if Tori will even HAVE another proper album for quite a while. I mean they're not even releasing that double/triple live thing till DECEMBER, which means that Tori seems to want at least some time off. I'm gonna assume that she's ready to "settle down" and have a kid, and once she has the kid, I doubt she'll be in any big hurry to get to touring again, and with a new album comes new touring, and I don't know that Tori's the kind who will want to take a small child on tour, or send the kid off to not see mommy for a few months while she's on Tour. Anyone else think the same thing, or am I just speculating too much? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 19:26:06 -0600 (CST) From: Serra Angel Subject: Re: BT+ ima On Wed, 27 Jan 1999 Talulagrl1@aol.com wrote: > please dont flame this. > and no disrespect. > but i dont think that tori would like. > her music played in strip clubs. > thoughts? > Hmm I'm not sure. I could see her liking something like "Professional Widow" in that context... that's basically what that song is about. And as someone else pointed out, she was doing something evry similar in the YKTR days... exploitation is exploitation. I've noticed actually that the sex industry is very similar to the music industry and to Hollywood... it's all about who you know, what you look like, and whether or not you can preform when the chips come down. Who's scratching who's back and what not. I think Tori understands that and doesn't want to be a part of it anymore, with quotes like "I am not in this industry, I will never be in this industry." So it's a good question. There's an element of freedom of expression in a dance, and choosing the music you are going to dance to, whether you have the sexual element or not. I know Tori has mentioned that she tries to tap into the SENSUAL as opposed to her old image, which she felt was purely sexual. So I think she may be upset and being taken out of context. But on the other hand. I see it as this nice little subversion. A lot of the dancer like to dance to these totally ironic song (sometimes I think they do it on purpose). WLike "baker Street" by jerry Raferty, which is about a woman who can't keep her husband at home and faithul. And I always laugh when they dance to marilyn Manson, who set out to mock all the fake "beautiful people" out there. So, to a certain extent, I think it is good that her voice is being heard in unlikely places; hopefully someone is listening.
