I just wanted to get my own interpretation in here before the discussion completely dissipates. I must admit this song means a lot to me because it's my favorite song on the album and I'm pulling away some very different messages from it than others here. Well, maybe not completely different...well, maybe...well, ok, I'll just explain then! Overall I do believe the song is about keeping lonely secrets and shutting everyone out of them. I'm reminded of the Sylvia Plath line "I rocked shut as a seashell. They had to call and call and pick the worms off me like sticky pearls." Plath was making a reference to her suicide attempt in the poem "Lady Lazarus," but this is not to say that I think Tori's song is a reference to suicide...not literally anyway. It's sort of a suicide of the soul..wanting to pull away and hide from everything and be by yourself, wanting to become shy and reclusive. I of course can't back up this theory by explaining every line in the song, but let me show you what I do have... Ok, in the chorus she says "I guess I'm an underwater thing so I guess I can't take it personally." - meaning that perhaps she feels like she's underwater in her own world when everybody else is enjoying eachother on land. In other words, she feels trapped by her own inner world, and won't allow herself to surface and join in with the "regular" world, so she can't take it personally when no one will come and talk to her. I can at least attempt to back this up further with the line "calling for my soul at the corners of the world, I know she's playing poker" - she still won't come back to earth and communicate, her soul's off somewhere else. Then she says "and if your friends don't come back to you and you know this is madness a lilac mess in your prom dress and you say I guess I'm an underwater thing" - again, it seems as if she's saying that she feels abandoned by her friends because she's not quite living in "their world" and she's so off in her own that they up and abandon her. But that's what happens when you're an underwater thing...a mermaid perhaps? Well, whatever the projected fantasy, it's a world all its own. Liquid diamonds could very easily be tears stemmed from this type of lonliness...but then there's *these* lyrics, (that aren't officially in the lyric book mind you, but this is what I make of them): "I go I go inside its shell I see its soul and you're doing oh so well these days you did it again and I say it's coming back again something like that those Saturdays such was it can he bring me those dreams keep it back daddy's down, preaching back into himself and keep it just between us...it's liquid." Suddenly I"m reminded of "Icicle" and the lines about masterbating while "they're all downstairs singing prayers". If you think about it with *those* words as a guide it sounds as if she's resurrecting an old fantasy of a crush she used to have in high school, and how she had to lock herself away in her room in desperate attempt to keep her activities a secret from those who would judge her. So in a way that would put a whole new spin on the image of "liquid diamonds". But you know with Tori, who knows, she could have easily had 4 or 5 metaphors in mind while writing this. ;) I obviously don't have the whole song figured out, I'm just pulling out and analysing pieces of the puzzle. It's difficult to put it all together. Does anyone know of an interview where she perhaps discussed the meaning of this song? I haven't seen anything on it really... Also I'm in total agreement that these songs just take on different meanings to different people based on the individual's personal experiences...it's a sort of projecting. I always had a problem, especially in youth with being reserved and quiet and shy so perhaps that's why I'm wanting to read into it this way. We all want to feel connected and that someone can relate to us, I suppose...but I digress. Thanks to those who had the patience to read this mess! ;) Cynthia Glass http://www.angelfire.com/il/glassasylum "history has recorded some pretty nasty things that have happened to people i think we remember i think it's in our cells and i think it can still hurt sometimes." - Tori Amos "Beware, stale heirs. Apparently, they already have a scheduled list for releases in the forthcoming two months, in which Tori is NOT included. You're referring to ToriCon 99, which is being held this year in Portland, OR, the first weekend in August. ToriCon is the annual gathering of folks from rec.music.tori-amos. It's an excuse for us to get together and meet the people behind the text. ToriCon is not a closed event or by invitation only or anything like that. Anyone who wants to come is welcome. We don't particularly care if you're an rmta'er or not -- it helps, but we've had non-rmta folk come and had it work out wonderfully. Most of them end up becoming rmta'ers later. We just suck 'em in. ;) We have a dinner/dance every year {this year it's going to be at this yummy Greek restaurant}. We're also planning on having another RAINN auction -- last year, we raised $2000 for RAINN through the auction. The auction is available to everyone, not just the attendees of ToriCon, and you can place email bids and watch a website to see how bidding is going. Regardless of the name, ToriCon has very little to do with Tori herself. She doesn't come, although we always send her a tee-shirt and a letter to let her know how much we raised for RAINN. Tori almost never comes up as a topic of conversation. If you've ever went into rmta, you'll see that Tori is only rarely talked about there, so it's only natural that we wouldn't talk much about her when we meet IRL. ;) For more information about ToriCon, including about how much it'll cost and when it is and other nifty stuff, email toricon-info@rmta.org. You'll get a FAQ that tells you more about the event in general, and specific information about Portland's ToriCon. /nad {ToriCon 98 organizer} ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 12:13:09 -0800 (PST) From: Sarah Subject: tori necklace thanx everybody i'm gonna try to get to hot topic this weekend. i hope i find one! i'm still fuming! sarah _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? If your copy of the UtP vinyl is the pink one, it should have a pink sticker on the front saying something like "limited edition pink vinyl". The black vinyl release of UtP does not have this sticker {obviously enough, eh?}. If you're keeping your record wrapped in hopes of it increasing in value, I'd say you're looking at a lost cause. Official promo pictures {they're 8x10s, and they'll have the Atlantic logo and the artist's name in the white space} are given out by Atlantic to radio stations, record stores, magazines, and such to promote a new artist or a new offering by an established artist. These pictures very rarely increase in value -- they're pretty common, and most of them {especially Tori's} are usually available elsewhere. I'd call them $10-$20 each. Unofficial 8x10s, such as one taken by a fan {and I'm assuming that's what the concert one is}, are worth a whole lot less. The fan who took the picture can easily have more made. I wouldn't say that one of those is worth anything beyond the cost of photo processing. Of course, as with any collectible item, it's only worth what someone will pay for it. There's no way to say exactly what such an item is worth {as the author of _Tori Amos Collectibles_ points out in his introduction to the book}. I'm basing the price estimate above on what I've seen press photos go for in the past. If you're interested in press photos, check out used music stores, used book stores {they often have more than just books}, and record shows. Record shows are usually a great place to find them, but you can sometimes get lucky and stumble across them in other places.
