I thought this video was so metaphorically meaningful. The part where she is saying "Some things only she knows" as she stares down the priest is amazing. The glare she gives him and the complete change of expression his face shows is so powerful. Maybe it's just a girl thing, but I thought it was intense. I thought this was one of the better videos. They're voted upon by members of the Recording Academy. This is a lotta people, and you just pay a membership fee and you get a pretty newsletter and invitations to parties and all sorts of things in the mail. I'm assuming it's something like the Broadcasting socitety I'm in, and they handle the grammys, in the same way that the Oscars are handled. All the eligible members get a ballot with the nominees on them, they send it back in, they count the votes, they announce the winner. Here's why Tori won't win the best alternative record category. The Beastie Boys have an absolute ton of exposure to the recording industry on every single level. They're the best selling rap act of all time, period. They put Def Jam on the map with their debut album (which has sold more copies by itself than Tori has for all her albums combined I'm willing to bet), and then they made history yet again, by being one of the first groups to start their OWN label, all on their own. They're wildly respected in the music industry by pretty much everyone for continuously being innovative and creative on every single thing they do. Adam (one of those wacky beasties) has this neat thing, the Tibetan Freedom Concert that he's been doing for the last 3 years that he personally invites a LOT of very prominent artists to appear at. (Pretty much everyone who matters in the music industry that wasn't busy, and even U2 and R.E.M. decided to change their plans to be there one year). This gives them soooo much influence in the recording industry that most artists couldn't hope to compete. Sure Tori does her things, with RAINN, and she does a few things now and then, but she's not exactly the most popular of artists. The voting is probably SUPPOSED to be based on the quality of the record and how creative and innovative and stuff it is, but lets be honest here, everyone's biased. Not to mention, tori's album got more than it's fair share of bad reviews, and even a good chunk of the Tori fans didn't like it too much. Conversely, most of the known world that had any interest in the album, loved hello nasty. Spin magazine even made 3 special covers for the Beastie boys, just for their album. Sure, Tori's great to US, the Tori fans, but she's never really been a headliner for the entire music industry like the Beasties. > does anyone out there have any more insights as to what they use for > criteria for these awards?????????????????????? it's all just a big popularity contest. You get a ballot, you pick the one you like, you send it back. There aren't any criteria, it's just a vote for the thing you think is the best. The voters are supposedly supposed to judge the entries on creativity and all that, but really it's who they like, or at the least, who they've heard before and didn't change the station. Unless they send each voter a copy of all the songs and albums nominated (that would be near impossible, but who knows) then you have to rely on normal exposure to the music, and in that category, most, if not all, of the artists got a lot more airplay, and sold more copies (exposure) than Tori. You can't vote for what you didn't hear, and the likelyhood of Tori being heard more than the Beasties isn't too good. This is why all the "adult contemporary" artists tend to win the big categories like Record of the Year and Album of the Year. The voters aren't primarily the alternative 20something crowd, they're by my guesses usually 30 somethings and up, and that's why artists like Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams, and Bonnie Raitt win the big cagetories. The voters have heard them before, not necessarily cause it's the best. I'm going to bet that Sheryl Crow is going to win a good number of the awards she's up for. I don't consider her best by any means in most of the categories, but I just think of what my parents would like, and she sticks out. I don't expect everyone to agree with what I'm saying, but if you'll look at past years, you'll see what I'm talking about, and know that even though Tori is great, she's probably not going to win, just like another of my favorite artists, Bjork, never wins any of the awards either. (she didn't even get nominated this year, and I'm none too pleased about that). > my outlook on the whole awards things is to hope for the best and of > course to expect the worst. :) well, the grammies are all a crock of crap anyway, same for most of the awards out there. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 09:37:19 -0800 (PST) From: Jen Subject: New Club for Trading I said this before, but there is a club called TORI AMOS TRADES for people who need to trade or want to trade boots, It is at yahoo.com, under trades. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Maybe it is a habit, a >joke....who knows....It's Tori. > It was probably just a cue. I just don't get >it. i posted this to RDTRN a while back... um so since you asked... hope this helps i've read a few quotes here and there about what tori has to say about PTM, and she refers a few times to a book called "Holy Blood, Holy Grail." this is a neat book about how Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married at the wedding at Cana, and she was carrying his child of the davidic line, she ends up in france, and the gist of the rest of the book is that the merrovingin line of kings in france is the holy line of david. there's lots about how the bible was written in a kind of code, and stuff about the black madannas strewn about france. anyway... so this is where the song kinda comes from. i think i should just put the quote here.... "Of course I believe they [Jesus and Mary Magdalene] were together. Of course I believe they were a couple and that she understood things. She represents the Goddess, the female, the feminine, the joining, the equality. Some things only she knows. And until we acknowledge that there are some things only she knows; and there's some things only he knows, too; and until we have mutual respect, there's that prison tower, and there's that mission (church), and the hot girl got lost somewhere in between." (obtained from the torphoria webpage). i think that quote really summs up the song... well ok then Erika why continue the rest of the post... good question... well, i've come this far i might add what i think cus hey, someone might find it interesting, doubtful there's always a chance. some of the lines.... "she said she knew what my book did not" - mary magadalene knows what's not in the bible, she knows the real story. she knows the story that poeple have been trying to hide for centuries. some people have been seeking this truth out, but that's a whole other thing all together... "she said they all think they know him well she knew him better," - the book goes on to explain that Mary came first within the group following him, so she would know him best, and this angered some of the other apostles. "hey they found a body not sure it was his still their using his name" - it wasnt jesus who was on the cross, someone esle dies in his place (note these are theories in a book, and may or may not be my own). "she gave him shelter" - she hid him so he may appear to rise again "somewhere i know she knows, somethings only she knows" - again there are only things Mary can know, about Jesus and the about the world, she is the other half of the coin, you cant have one with out the other, and PTM is about the misson, or church, denying the feminine or "other." if you think of mission as a idea, rather than a place it makes more sense, ( forever i thought the mission was an actual place) so in the video, tori is with the two girls, and they go through the street and collect all the women, and the men watch, finally they reach a preist and she confronts him, "Some things only she knows," then they lay down and the preist walks over them, just as the church has been walking over women since its inception (we can thank paul for that). they have supressed the feminine. in some "occult" groups they worship Sophia, who they beleive to be the feminine side of god or wisdom. ok, if you've made it this far, thanks for reading.... i hope it made sense and was interesting, i dont wanna clutter with boring stuff to read... It was the 6th of November 1998 -my 25th birthday- and I was on a train to Pittsburgh(the longest trip I ever took...I left when I was 24 and arrived at 25.. bad joke I know :) ). My friend Richard was waiting for me at the Station and I was waiting to give him a hug that I owed him for a couple years. He drove me to the outside of an Arena, it was 8am freezing cold, a girl named Phillys came and suddenly I found myself with a number written on my hand. It was number 2 for the meet and greet with TORI AMOS! what was I doing there? I didn't belong there. People weren't even speaking my language.. Then another person with another different language arrived. The only difference between Rurik and I, was that the people knew where he came from when he told them "Germany"... I, on the other hand, had to show the map on my passport to them, after saying " I came from Uruguay...South America.. on the Atlantic coast...right in between Brazil, Argentina" :-D other than that, we both were the crazy people that came from more than 5.000 thousand miles away, east and south of the world. But more people were arriving to this wonderful place... Maria (the "blue keetcha") and her friends, Jeremy, Melissa and Marian, Paul, Joey and his friend, Matt P. Then I was introduced to the wonderful trio: Carolyn, Gina and Emy. It was a lot of people from a lot different places... but somehow I was just like them. That was something that never happened to me before... I was surrounded by people that loved Tori as much as I did... wow.. amazing! I was with EWF's !!! I *was* dreaming. So we talked and froze together for hours, and I was as happy as I could be... then someone came with the sort of bad news, there wasn't going to be a Meet & Greet that day, as Tori was having a photo shoot for the live album. Well, that didn't bother me too much...I was hanging out with great Tori people, and I was still going to see the first Tori concert of my life... And I did. It was a great show and as like in every dream when you want to run and you can't move your legs... well, from my seat I couldn't see Tori's face during most of the concert because of the Bösendorfer (I never hated a piano before... not even when my brother started playing). I saw her hair and her upper body, and her face once in a while... there were some technical problems and so she was joking and laughing... she played everybody's fav songs (family and friends from Uruguay)... Past the Mission (my mother's), Little earthquakes (my sister's), Precious Things (Gonzalos's), Talula (Dario's), Caught a Lite Sneeze (my brother's) and Iieee and Spark, two of my faves from FTCGH and Iieee being one of the songs I *really* wanted to hear live. She also played Northern Lad and Pandora.. (until that concert) my least fav songs from FTCGH.. but seeing them live was awesome, especially Northern Lad, that was like a whole new song to me. Merman was hauntingly beautiful. As I said, there were some technical problems... which reminds me of something .... While being in England, Richard got a poster signed for me and told Tori it was for his friend in Uruguay that was planning to go to the USA to see her... Then in August after a M&G Richard send me this message in reply to my message where I confirmed that I was going to the USA before the end of the tour. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Laura> I'll be booking a seat for the 15th Oct to Miami... Richard> Wow--that's amazing. Tori will be expecting to see you in mid-November. She said she'd try to be sick for those shows. No joke--I told her you were definitely planning to come up for at least three shows in mid-November and that's exactly what she said. How hilarious. :-D - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ------------------------------------------------------------------- Hilarious?!?! you bet :-D, especially after hearing her say during my first concert, that the piano was sick and that "she just needs a Margarita". What can I say?...it was a very fun/crazy show. Tori left me speechless for what seemed days. I think it was after Rochester that I could actually speak after a concert... actually I screamed in Spanish after the concert in Ithaca, but I still wasn't able to "speak" as *nobody* understood what I was screaming... But mm yes dreams always go back and forth so lets go back to the after concert scene in Pittsburgh, PA. After the concert me and Richard were walking to the barricades. There were a lot of people there, but somehow there was this spot that nobody had taken yet... it was a column and a step, so I stood there and I was standing a bit higher than the three rows of heads, and therefore I was able to see Tori when she came out. She was signing stuff for people and I was there with the biggest smile on my face, just looking at Her signing, talking to people and then doing the same thing with the next person. I was just happy for being there able to see Her from such a short distance... and then when She was right in front of me She looked up for a second and waved at me. If I had a big smile before that moment, then after *that* my lips stretched even more till they reached my ears ;-) Yes, I was walking on clouds after the show. Part II coming soon. I haven't been online for months so I am posting what I should've posted a while ago ... \\|// (O-O) - ----------oOO--(_)--OOo------------------------------------------------- ldamico@adinet.com.uy (at home) laura@redfacil.com.uy (at work) http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/lot/3373/index.html ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V4 #7 ***********************************
