Someone asked about Jon Evans and I wanted to let everyone know that I did an email interview with him (and met him AFTER I did the interview - how strange!) and it will appear in my zine, Rats Live On No Evil Star (#10) when I finally get it finished - probably within a month or so. He's a great guy and he had a lot of interesting things to say. Subject: Re: Jon Evans To expound on the info given by the encyclopedic mind of Richard Handal... I talked to Caton, Matt, Matt's Critters Buggin' bandmate Skerik, and Skerik's sometime touring buddy Stanton Moore (of the New Orleans funk-jazz group Galactic) about Jon working with Tori. Basically it's one of those person A knew someone who knew someone who knew person B kinds of things. Matt, as you should all know by now, plays in a band called Critters Buggin. One of their albums was produced by Eric Rosse. Skerik is the sax player in Critters Buggin, and also plays with the New Legends, a conglomerate of amazing jazz-funk musicians under the guidance of Fog City productions (Galactic's old label). The bassist of the new legends is Jon Evans. Hence, when Tori needed a bassist to fill the slot that neither Justin Medal-Johnson or George "I'm funkier than you" Porter Jr. could occupy, Matt suggested Jon as someone who could blend very well with Matt's "groove first" style of playing. And speaking of Matt, Caton told me that he was the one who first suggested Matt to Tori, and then she talked to Eric about him who seconded the reccommendation. As far as recordings with Jon on them, they're hard to come by (try checking out his band in the San Fran), but something should come out on Fog City records soon. Nadyne said: > As I understand it, EastWest is Atlantic's overseas "branch", if you will. > They're one and the same. Atlantic only covers the US, EastWest covers > everything else {including Canada}. Not exactly. my understanding of how it works is that it's an affiliate of WEA International (WEA is Warner, Elektra, Atlantic -- all 3 record companies come under this larger umbrella). Bands on Elektra (Metallica and Pantera for instance (I'm actually having trouble remembering if Pantera is on Elektra, someone correct me if I'm wrong) will have their albums released by East/West in other parts of the world -- the UK, Australia, etc. I also have to say -- I don't think "Bells" is about Beene because it's about a friendship that has died, and her friendship with Beene is alive and well. (Also I don't think the "brothers and lovers" line is meant to be taken literally -- it's like when you play house as 2 girls, one has to be the man, you know?) I Justin Meldal-Johnson is in Beck's regular band, and Tori used him for her record, I assume, because she liked working with him. But no, he couldn't tour with her -- he probably was already slated to start work on Beck's "Mutations" album around the time Tori wanted to start touring. I can't help but say I hope Jon stays a part of her band. :) Beth - -- "There's a devil lying by your side. You might think he's asleep but look at his eyes. He wants you, baby, to be his bride.
