There's this one really beautiful Tori quote that I read but can't seem to remember. It was something about falling in love, I'm fairly certain. Does anybody know what I'm talking about? That's really all I remember about it...big torihugs to anybody who can help me out here. :) I also keep having this lyric in my head that I can't place. I don't know if it's in the song or if she just does it live, but all I know is that she sings "and she's flying..." what is this? I can't think of the song! I was looking at my FTCH liner notes today and noticed something I'd wondered before but forgot to ask. Jon Evans didn't play bass...did Tori not know him then or did he not know the songs or what? Or could Justin can't-remember-the-last-name just not tour? I've always thought about a lyric in Black-Dove where she says "how a lion becomes a mouse." Does this remind anybody else about the fable with the lion and the mouse, where the lion saves the mouse's life, sure that the mouse won't return the favor? And the mouse ends up chewing the net that the lion's caught in so he can go free...so I guess in that line she might mean something about how the person that's always on the offensive suddenly becomes the victim? I think of the "january girl line" in terms of tori saying she likes to put records out in the winter when everybody wants to slit their wrists. I think the part about the woods has something to do with how the doctors had just told her she was out of the woods before her miscarriage. Is the tiny, kind of scary house just the uncertainty of her pregnancy? Or was it her baby that was the january girl (she lost her baby Dec. 23, so it was almost Jan.) and the tiny kind of scary house was just whatever went wrong in the! womb? I've had these assorted thoughts on the song, which I really love, btw. One more irrelevant thought. With all the reviews, etc. I've been reading on Jewel lately, I've realized something very important about Tori. You may see reviewers panning her for being kooky or for having such a cult following or for speaking in metaphors or what have you, but I've never heard it said that she was a prima donna or took her fame to her head or any of that. And I think what isn't said means a lot in that case. Just like the controversy now about Jewel and her manager and all that...I remarked to my mother that in so many cases, even the people that preach honesty and kindness end up breaking a lot of toes to be "successful." My mom asked, "Did Tori do that?" I obviously said that I didn't think so. I think in Tori's case she used the old fashioned tricks known as talent and hard work. Archaic to some, but always foolproof solutions. :) I'm (finally) out of words...thanks for reading this far! I just want you all to know I mentioned Tori in the magazine I work for. Let me explain: I am the editor of Reptile Hobbyist (RH for short). In the January 1999 issue, which will be out in a few weeks, I wrote an editorial about new year's resolutions and how people in the reptile hobby should use them as an opportunity to help reptiles or wildlife in general. So, I closed with a quote from Tori "the snakes they are my kin", which is from Black Dove, if I'm not wrong. Just thought you might like to know. If there is a demand for it, I can send the editorial to the list, but I dont' want to bore the non-herpetologically minded folks. Tripp Gwyn tgwyn@infoave.net ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 18:08:13 PST From: "Thomas Mazorlig" Subject: Re: Discuss amongst yourselves There's plenty I would love to hear on the live album. Song for Eric, because I still can't fine the China single and that song is heaven in a voice, Landslide because before I found Tori (and some others) Stevie was the only star in my sky, Playboy Mommy because it breaks my heart, Doughnut Song because it was exactly what I needed when I needed it, Crucify, Yes, Anastasia from the Ithaca show because it was the first time for it and I was there, Cooling so everyone can find it, Raspberry Swirl, Winter, Hotel, Space Dog, Tear in Your Hand also from Ithaca because that was the moment I got over him, Horses (all the Neil songs), Spark because I haven't heard it live, Siren so I don't have to buy a soundtrack I don't really want, Merman so we can all rejoice and for Mat Shepard, not Northern Lad because I did get over him, Cornflake Girl, Pretty Good Year, and last, but not least Take to the Sky. As for covers, again there are many. Shed Your Skin---Indigo Girls (I can't believe no one's mentioned them yet) Touch Me Fall---Indigo Girls The Cool, Cool River---Paul Simon The End---The Doors Kayleigh/Lavender---Marillion Shelter From the Storm---Bob Dylan just about anything by Janis Joplin Lucy in the Sky---Beatles (OK, someone said it but it's a cool idea) Kathy's Song---Simon and Garfunkel Crash---Dave Matthews (suggested line change (that I sing when I sing along): Pull up your shirt a little more and show your world to me) If---Pink Floyd Dance me to the End of Love---Leonard Cohen I'm sorry I don't know who said it, but I'd like to politely disaggree that Tori shouldn't cover current artists. She covered Nirvana when Nirvana was current. And were she to cover Dylan that's current because he's still recording. As are the Stones, who she's covered in the past, and Leonard Cohen. Just my two cents. Enough for now. Sweet dreams everyone. I'm on a posting spree tonight, baby! This makes four. Anyway, my take on the reddish color vs reddest color bit, I noticed when readingsome of Alice Walker's books (Meridian most recently) the phrase "that reddish color" more than once. We know Tori reads Alice Walker, so maybe that's where she got it from. Walker writes a lot of conversation in dialect, so it does follow the Southern expression theme. Maybe some day I'll find a chapter/page location, but right now I'm just happy to have contributed some information, relevant or otherwise. :) love, sonya =Thank you for your squirrel= ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 21:33:23 -0500 From: Giovanni Mantilla Subject: Hmm... Hey guys, This was kind of strange for me but I'll tell you guys about it. Last night I was flipping channels and stopped on TVE International (Spanish International Television) and this show called "Digan Lo Que Digan" was on; it's some sort of talk-show... and there were some girls modeling some weird silicone bras and doing some strange oriental-like dance... they were dancing to some music in the background... which I immeadiately recognized... it was CRUEL! I was like "hmmm... this is REALLY weird"... it was spanish TV and well, it was really strange but cool! The second time I've heard Tori stuff oddly being played on latin american shows, first it was the opening notes of Precious Things on Sabado Gigante and now this. Hehe. Cool. (with the obvious exception of bsides like Frog on my Tongue or Cooling and that boorish 'piggy/peggy' debate. . . ) Sorry, but thats just my two cents. Lord knows I have trouble hearing what Tori is singing and I get some crazy versions of lyrics in my head, but when it gets to me or I am really stumped, I simply. . . you guessed it! I checked the lyrics against the cd/tape/album insert/cover! There's so many wonderful Tori-things to talk about. . . lyrics included. But really, to go on and on over a word or two? Go ahead flame me if you must. But I'm on this list because I like to read & discuss Tori-stuff, and I am so tired of scrolling through half the post because half of it is endless, redundant banter about a word or two! Besides, isnt there a list specifically designed so people can nit-pick over word discrepancies in Tori's lyrics? If not, maybe someone with enough time and hardware on their hands to puzzle over a single word in a song should start one (because I for one don't have the time, hardware or interest - but apparently, some of you might). I know its a free country, this list isn't censored or restricted, blah blah blah. . . my apologies anyways.
