Pruitt / C. Minter" Subject: RE: frog on my toe I have always said, and I still say, that she says "reddest." Tori adds the "sh" sound on the ends of her s's a lot. For example, in "pandora's aquarium" when she says "Pandora's" it sounds like "Pandorash." This is at the beginning of the song. She also does it a lot when she sings, "yes." Sometimes she'll say, "yesh." For someone to say, "you paint them toes that reddish color" just sounds silly to me. Her grandfather is telling her how to be a "haughty" woman. Haughty women will wear the "REDDEST" color of nail polish, not the reddish. I don't know why no one else gets this. Every time I raise this point, someone always says, "yeah, but it SOUNDS like reddish." Well, if you've listened to Tori sing, you know that she does not always phonetically pronounce everything correctly. So basically, that's my opinion, but then, there are still those that think Tori says "Lord of the Files." cristina ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Dec 1998 23:27:54 -0500 From: Giovanni Mantilla Subject: Re: poorly promoted?? Hi all, In regards of this situation, I am actually quite pleased with the way Atlantic has promoted ftcgh so far. I mean, *so far* we've gotten 3 singles, one of which was an enhanced disc with 2 Tori videos plus 2 new b-sides, a Tori video collection, plenty of TV appeareances (Storytellers, Sessions At West 54th, Leno, Letterman, Conan, Revue, Ultrasound, Rosie, and *even* the MTV Awards thing), presence on the written media (Rolling Stone, Spin, and LOTS of papers/magazines) and the confirmation of a live/b-side record. For me, that's enough to call it *great* promotion. Plus, the US/European EWF got a tour. Atlantic has done very very very well. I assume you are referring to EastWest... and reasonably so since European EWF have only gotten the Spark singles. But in America, I think the promotion has been excellent. And this is coming from a South American kid who has to make an extra effort to get anything Tori-related, since it's fairly impossible to get anything here locally just by waiting... meaning I have to import everything that's available for importing (albums, singles, videos, magazines). So, umm... yeah, I think Atlantic has done a great job. You guys can disagree with me of course. :) Giovanni http://come.to/corncity At 10:26 AM 7/12/1998 -0500, you wrote: > >Hola, hola, > >I was just wondering what Vanessa meant by "poorly promoted"... > >I think that before getting together and writing to AtRec we should really >try to figure out what would be "greatly promoted" and what exactly is being >a "nice record label" mean. > >A few days ago I came across the Underground, Sophie B. Fiona never said that about Tori. That quote is misinterpreted by a lot of people. Here is the quote: Interviewer: I wonder if Alanis and Tori-who you're forever being compared to-were as clever. What do you think of that comparison anyway? Fiona Apple: I can explain that right here, right now. Alanis-were both white, have long hair parted down the middle, and we're young people who get angry sometimes. It ends there. Tori Amos-two words: piano, rape. They're unintelligent comparisons. So Fiona Apple never said, "tori is nothing but rape and piano." From that quote it says the only things she has in common with Tori are they were both raped and both play piano. In addition, for those on the digest version, it absolutely sucks to have to scroll through a message you've already read the original of.] Here is exactly why I think that Tori is poorly promoted: 1) Several items are released only to select markets. Examples: * More Pink (Australia) * UtP promo video (Australia) * all the UK limited edition singles * Live in NY video (Europe, Australia, Canada) [1] * Compilation video (US, Canada) That means that Atlantic is forcing the considerable Tori fanbase to have to pay through the nose to get these items. And not a penny of that extra money is going into Atlantic's pockets. 2) The absolute lamest stuff gets released in the US. Almost without exception, the UK/Euro releases simply kick the ass of the comparable US release {if there even -is- a comparable US release}. So Tori's considerable US fanbase gets to again pay through the nose to import items: more money that doesn't go into Atlantic's coffers. 3) {This is an offshoot of (1) and (2)} Atlantic has bloody well nearly forced the creation of a market for bootleg compilation discs because a lot of people simply can't afford to import the singles. Atlantic whines about it, but they're obviously not doing a damned thing about it. Tori's got nearly 150 commercial boots to her name right now -- name me another artist with four solo albums out with that many bootlegs. A good number of them are compilations of studio material. They could kill the bootleg compilation market in one fell swoop with a well-thought-out bee-sides compilation that we can find someplace outside Australia. 4) The UK simply got screwed on ftch. They did get the two Spark singles, but then they didn't get -anything- afterwards. RS did get released in the rest of Europe, but not in the UK -- so yet again, Torifans had to pay through the nose to import another item. 5) While that Tower Records promotion before the album looked kinda good on the surface, I'd be willing to say it absolutely sucked. For fans outside the US who wanted to hear "Merman", they either had to wait for a bootleg to arrive (and the song was available on MP3 and wav within a day) or yet again pay a whole lot of money for the US import of the album plus shipping. For fans not using Win95, they were even more screwed -- Atlantic told them to sign up for a "special goodie", but it appears they never delivered [2]. 6) And then there was the "limited edition lithograph" that was available through certain independent music stores with the release of ftch. Again, if you were overseas, you either had to find a store in the US that was willing to ship to you or pay way too much at eBay for it. If you'd already ordered the CD through Tower to get Merman, you had to choose between not getting the lithograph or buying another copy. 7) The website! It simply rocked during the club tour. And then... it died. They made an "official Tori newsgroup" {an obvious slap in the face to the already-existing rec.music.tori-amos}, which they closed down suddenly. For awhile, they were the first to tell us anything: tour dates, television appearances, etc. We got pictures, soundfiles, videos. Then they just stopped updating it. It's no better than what they did to us with the website during the BfP era. 8) The Compilation video should've been complete. While Tori's not terribly pleased with YKTR as a whole, she has performed certain songs live as well as including sheet music in her books. They could've made the video for "The Big Picture" a special hidden track {say, after the credits had run}. I would've loved to see the PW video on there too, although I more understand why that one wasn't included. 9) Merman. There is no reason for that song to languish, available only on the Internet. It might be released on the rumored bee-sides compilation, but it might not. We don't know. Regardless, we're stuck with a bootleg of it or listening to it through shitty computer speakers. Atlantic has a highly marketable artist on its hands, with a fanbase with a whole lot of disposable income they're just waiting to hand over to Atlantic. Instead of taking advantage of this, they force us to pay a lot of money for imported items -- and that money doesn't go to them. /nad [1] Before someone tries to correct me, I'll say this again: the "Live in NY" video has NOTNOTNOT been released in the States. Look at your copy, it's an import from Canada. It's -available- in the States, but it has not been released here. That's part of the reason that it's a bit on the expensive side. My -guess- as to why Atlantic did it this way is that Lifetime television holds the rights to the video in the US. [2] I haven't heard a single report of those users who couldn't listen to Merman getting anything. Anyone? ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #422 *************************************
