You have to go into the myth of Persephone to really understand what I'm talking about: You have to know that the Lord of the Flies is another word for Hades, and that Hades captured Persephone. It's the rape of Persephone; that is her myth. And she became queen of the underworld and couldn't leave for half the year." ~Tori talking about Pandora's Aquarium in the November 20, 1998 edition of the New Jersey Star Ledger It is Lord of the Flies, not Lord of the Files. I think it's pretty easy to hear "Lord of the Flies" in the song. ~~Kristen ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Working Class Hero-John Lennon 2. Needle & The Damage Done-Neil Young, I think Tori's take on this song would be amazing 3. A Certain Slant Of Light-The Tea Party 4. Something I Can Never Have-NIN 5. Last Goodbye-Jeff Buckley 6. Pendulum-Mark Lanegan 7. Bed Of Roses-Screaming Trees 8. The Wind Cries Mary-Jimi Hendrix 9. Another Lonely Day-Ben Harper 10. The Wind That Shakes The Barley-Dead Can Dance, I think Tori has some very similar vocal qualities to Lisa Gerrard which I noticed when she was singing Song For Eric in both Vegas and Raleigh, and would be cool to hear how she does a very cool DCD song 11. Love Me Two Times-The Doors, Oooh, Tori doing Jim, gives me goosebumps :) 12. Fell On Black Days-Soundgarden, I know some mind find this a bit strange but I'd like to hear how Tori interprets this song as her own 13. My Curse-Afghan Whigs, it's a painful enough song as it is, but w/ Tori's emotion I think it would be extremely powerful I'm sure if I was awake I'd have much more lucent ideas, but off the top of my head I thought these would be very cool to hear Tori redo. Favorite Tori thing this year? - -- Well, I'd have to say From the Choirgirl Hotel, because it reinvolved me back into Toriphile life, cos -- in all honesty -- while Boys for Pele has some of my most favorite songs, it was an extremely challenging album for me. Really hard time with that one. Save for Twinkle and Doughnut Song, I have a really, really hard time listening to anything past Talula... And my favorite television appearance, by far, was Roseanne. I don't think there will ever be anything to top how powerful that show was. 2. Songs I want on the LIVE album? - -- Number one, I want the new version of The Waitress, because it has made it impossible for me to listen to the original version. =) The power of that song just sucks you down, chews you up, spits you back out. Ack! I lerv it! Sugar and Hotel were two of the most powerful songs LIVE for me. Total chills. Tear In Your Hand is a must, as are the LIVE versions of Raspberry Swirl (Matt was so adorable banging away!) and defo the Sweet Leaf-bridge version of She's Your Cocaine. Band version of Precious Things, of course, and Past the Mission. And the new Horses. Defo the new Horses. And Talula with the band was so good, I about wet myself in Raleigh. Oooh...and the band versions of Bells for Her and Father Lucifer are MUSTS.... 3. Songs I would love for Tori to cover? - -- Okay, I don't know if she's ever covered any of these, but here's some of my picks, extremely random: x Sweet Jane or Waiting for the Man by Velvet Underground x Union of the Snake or Save a Prayer by Duran Duran [The entire list shrieks -- no no no!!! Ack! Couldn't you totally see Tori singing these? REALLY. Sit and mull it over for a bit...] x Faith by The Cure x Heart of Glass by Blondie [I swear to Christ, if she doesn't cover this song sooner or later...] x Under My Thumb by The Rolling Stones x Eleanor Rigby or Helter Skelter by The Beatles I'm sure there are more, but it's three in the morning, and I'm thinking the couch is looking pretty good right about now... This isn't purely relevant to Anastasia herself, but it's a nice story for those of you who haven't heard it. Tori was somewhere in eastern VA (VA Beach? Williamsburg? Help me!) and had eaten bad crabs and was out practicing. Anastasia appeared to her as a ghost and asked Tori to tell her story. Thus, Anastasia was born. One interesting addendum to this is that over the summer, I met somebody who was related to a lady that worked the desk at the hotel Tori stayed that night. (I think she actually wrote YA in that hotel room) She said that Tori was really really sick but when she got in she stayed in the lobby and talked to the receptionist for about half an hour anyway. Now that the tour's over, I'll really miss Tori. I mean, she just seems like...more of a mutual friend that we all share. I think that's a good way of describing it because she gives so much to us, but in return we tend to share our own feelings and experiences with her. Which I guess explains why I can mis! s her so much....I think I need to go comb all the cafes for a little redheaded girl. :) Erin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Dec 1998 12:00:22 -0800 From: "J. Pruitt / C. Minter" Subject: atlantic promotion Okay, I may be alone on this, but I think that Atlantic did a fantastic job of promoting Tori's latest album. Would you rather them doTori/Wal-Mart promotional commercials like the in your face crap that they are doing with Garth Brooks? In early May, every record store I went to had a poster or cardboard cut out of FTCH displayed for everyone to see. Tower even had a special promotion going with the "Merman" song. Remember? Now granted, Atlantic has been slow to respond to Tori's enormous fan base. Yet the number of singles, imports, limited editions, and so ons are overwhelming to any amateur collector. It took a few years but Atlantic now understands the ever expanding girth of Tori's EWF's. They have responded to it with a video collection (for which I was extremely grateful considering I do not have cable) and they released a live video performance as well. Now they are going to give every EWF what he or she has been wishing for: a DOUBLE live CD. That's quite a bit of music. They might even release a video, too. I personally don't want Tori's name SATURATED all over the airwaves like Mariah Carey or any others of her (Mariah's) "caliber." I know I don't want her name to become synonomous with Wal-Mart. Tori is doing fine financially. She has complete control over the production of her albums, where and how they are recorded, and what musicians she's working with. I don't know what more you want Atlantic to do. What exactly would we say to them by organizing a mass "emailing" to let them know we are holding our breath? They know we are out here and they know that we are eagerly awaiting another release from Tori. Give her a break. She JUST got off a very long tour. There is a plethora of Tori music out there and I'm sure you have almost everything she's released. Just keep listening to what you have, watch your videos, and be patient. Let Tori have a life. Cristina ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 00:37:33 -0500 From: Erin Martin Subject: Plugged Tape Tree! OK, now with the tour over, fond memories are dancing in our heads as we crave !!MORE.NOW !! and seek out remembrances of concerts past. The best way that I can think of to do this, aside from cloning Tori and having her tour even more constantly, is to share the music with a tape tree from this tour. I've brought up this idea once and got responses from very kind volunteers, but I'm afraid I'll need more help than I have. What I need in order to get this going is more people to serve as "branches" and more shows. Please write if you are willing to be a branch (copy tapes for people in return for postage and blanks) or if you have a Plugged show, preferably CD-R, DAT, minidisc, etc. (I'd rather not use analog for the branch tapes, but if that's all I can find, I certainly won't be picky!) and you're willing to copy that (again, in return for blanks and postage) for the branches, please write for that too. I know that we all want to share this tour and relive it, or in man! y cases, live it at all. We can't bring this experience to other people if we don't make an effort to share it with them. I think it's a fairly safe assumption that the majority of people on the lists have a tape recorder with which they can copy tapes, and that they have a few minutes (how long does it take to hit the record button?) in which they can copy these. I don't mean to sound...preachy or self-righteous over this, I just really want this to work. This tour has meant a lot to all of us,and I want to keep that alive. What do you get from being a branch? Well, you get good copies of shows before others do. And Tori herself was once a tree, lest we forget. :) And you get to bring that music to them and meet Tori fans...who knows, your soul mate could be one of your leaves?! Think about it! OK, this is getting all weird and stuff, but my point is that many of us have the capacity, either by virtue of shows we have recorded or by having time to copy them, to help ou! t the EWF who deserve to share these experiences. If you! 're wil please just reply to me with a completed version of the below questions, and accept my big tori hugs and thanks!!!! Name: Location: YES or NO: I would be willing to be a branch. Shows I have: Date Location Format Quality etc. setlists are great if you can include them, but we can get them from websites, etc. so don't worry too much about them. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!
