Very astute, Shelley! :) That's really good. Yeats was a great believer in the Fae and wrote several poems about them. So yes, I wouldn't doubt for a second that Tori has read this poem at some point. Even if that specific poem didn't play a part, there are so many legends of human children being stolen by the Folk and taken to Otherworld that it makes sense she would build something around that theme. Even though he is her husband, he is always mentioned in the credits on the same level with Marcel. He is just one of the "team". It seemd to me like Eric Rosse wanted to get more credit than that. He always stood out in the credits, and he is put on the same level of producer as Tori on a lot of her singles and the first two albums. I get that feeling that no matter how much help Mark gave Tori, he still respects that this is her music, so he doesn't want any more credit than the other sound engineers. I think this is great for Tori. Eric seemed to consider Tori's music as "their" creation, rather than just hers. I don't know any of them personally, so this is all speculation on my part. I just wondered if others had similar impressions. Well, I can see where the red-headed boy as the rabbit makes total sense as a direct reference, and also the elevator as the hole that Alice keeps falling down, but I'm not sure about that picture thing...I haven't figured it out yet, but the eating the cookie thing just doesn't fit for me...no pun intended. >now shes at the caucus race. all the people within the rope circle that are dancing up a go-go are the caucus race participants. i havent yet figured out who the old man is though. Iggy Pop? (heh heh...couldn't resist, sorry...) Actually that old man was dancing around like the midget from Twin Peaks, but that could've just been an influence on the guy's dancing style, and nothing more... >in the caucus race scene he would be the dodo, but that doesnt fit with the rest of the video. ah well. all around the table is the tea party, of course. in the book, and not in the movie though, there is a duchess whose baby turns into a pig because of her piggish behaviour. and all the messy girls around the table turn into pigs, too. Now that most definately makes sense to me. That actually would explain that last bit of imagery... >so i say without a doubt it is alice in wonderland. but...i havent read lord of the flies and perhaps they put the pigs in as a double reference since we know everything that can be connecter with lord of the flies with pandora and cooling. I have a tendency to believe, (as do many other Toriphiles as well), that Tori is a master at double metaphors, meanings and references. In fact I have a theory that quite often she'll start out meaning one thing and it will somehow morph right into another while she's writing it...I kind of do the same thing when I write, maybe that's why. But the point is that sometimes you have to figure that all these little references, even in the videos, are probably coming from a lot of different sources and not just one. Now we all probably know by now that Rasberry Swirl the *song* is actually supposed to be a love song from Tori to her best friend Beenie, and makes reference to certain lesbian sexual activity...(it's not hard to guess ;) So the first few times I watched the video, along *with* the Alice in Wonderland type references, I was thinking along the lines of the meaning of the song itself as well. Now a few of these things may seem far-fetched, but this is just my own personal interpretation now: I think the little boy may represent the little boy in herself at a precocious and sexually curious age, about 10 to 12. And that little boy is trying to lure her into that underworld into herself (her bisexual curiousity, or the male side of her sexuality). So she takes the elevator down, but she has to force her way out because she still has some inhibitions (hence her rattling around the elevator as in a cage...or like Madonna, your choice). Perhaps the old man is the experienced side of it telling her that there is nothing to fear in exploration? Again, I haven't figured that one out again, either. So she goes into the dancing circle and she does bounce around and dance with a few girls in the process, getting a little closer to letting go of her fear. At the end at the dinner table, there are all these little girls perhaps representing little versions of herself when she was young, and all the "proper" behavior that was taught to her at that age as well. Then when they start letting go is obviously when they start eating like pigs, acting like pigs by having the food fight, and having fun *together as girls*. I think that's key. They turn into the pigs, enjoying completely excessive behavior and displaying probably an obvious sexual innuendo that's associated with "eating." I think my point is obvious. Then by the end when the little boy is sitting in her lap, it is her accepting that part of her sexuality and literally sitting well with it. The end. ;) So there ya go...a probably more psychoanalytical theory than the others, but again, it could be just *one* of the intended messages that Tori is giving. If someone else offered up this theory and I missed it, I'm sorry, and I'm not trying to steal. ;) I think my new favorite video in a close tie with "Spark" is the "Hey Jupiter" video, which could not more appropriately fit with the message of the song. I think the metaphors are beautifully simple and appropriate, (as I said), and if you're not touched by it in some way while watching it, well then you watch too much TV. Having gone through a similar breakup situation when Boys For Pele was released, this song was already on speed-dial to my spirit, and everytime I see this video now I bust out in tears instantly. I unfortunately never saw the video before, but now it puts a whole new dimension on it. I think the symbology is fairly obvious. She sits in the chair and watches the room (her world) burn down around her because she is so in despair from her loss, her loss being that joyful, hopeful and playful spirit in all of us that I think the child represents. The child represents the tiny little part of herself that can save her, and make her help herself, and it literally leads a woman to safety that is too blinded with grief to help herself anymore. That child did a great fucking job conveying that to me, she looked concerned and determined to keep her innocence all at the same time....it was beautiful. And especially when they panned back to Tori sitting in the chair, as if part of her is still up there burning down with that world, even though she's now safe in the car. Another thing I noticed is that it appeared to be a *hotel* that was burning down, it was hard to be sure from the outside, but judging from the hallways they were running through it sure looked like it from the inside. I thought there might be a connection, that perhaps there was a breakup that went down in that "hotel" experience that she said the song was about...I'd never name names because I know there would be those who would strongly disagree with me, but just saying there could be a connection. I don't want to get into a whole "Hotel" discussion now, but I just wanted to say that I enjoyed the latest theory on it that it could be about brief acquaintances and how they can profoundly affect our lives even in their brevity. However, as I said before, it could be about this and *other* things as well. I doubt any of her songs are ever about just *one* thing.
