Actually, this is precisely what Hotel is about (Not Trent Reznor, get off that horse people!). About people you meet in a moment here and then they're gone, and you wonder, Hmm... Or about the people you knew and loved and were very important once, but now they've drifted and you wonder, Hmm... It's about thoughts of the past, about "Could've been's". Remarks about the new video compilation (SPOILER WARNING!) S P O I L E R I got the video compilation on Friday (the 20th) and overall I think it's phenomenal to finally get to see all of her videos I (besides Spark :) ). I have a few Questions though, not about the actual videos but about the look and feel of the 'packaging': First thing: my copy and the one next to it when I got it off the shelf (actually a clerk got it for me because it was too high and I felt like a child reaching for the high shelf :) ) came in a black plastic snapcase with the actual label inserted into the plastic on the outside of the case. Most off the shelf videos come in a sleeve, and the label on the video actually does look like a sleeve cut open and slipped into the plastic on the outer part of the snapcase. Am I being paranoid? it's got the look of a boot except for the Atlantic logo on the label :) But no 'synopsis' on the back. The front shows her name at the top with the 4 CD covers depicted in a square, two on top, two beneath, and the back of the cover shows a still from 4 of the videos. The tape itself looks totally real (I mean like it really did come from Atlantic). Actually viewing the tape: I'm a little suprised that the videos were put together out of chronological order :) And I was hoping to see Professional Widow, and I'm a bit curious about it absence because the info floating around on the net did mention it on the compilation. But the way the videos are put together: play the tape and it jumps right in from the Atlantic logo on the screen to SATY. No title graphic or intro. Between videos the only bumpers are simple disolves showing the cover to each single the video is from. Total silence and no titles or intros to each video. It looks like someone took the videos and put them together on editing equipment, it all looks very basic. For some reason it 'feels' unfinished, like there was supposed to be something with the videos. I say 'put together on editing equipment' because to me it looks and 'feels' like I might be viewing something like one of my episodes when I've had to rush production and the episode ends up being 90 % complete, with the major editing done minus the titles and dubbed audio (narration or intro for example). hard to describe :) But I hate the idea of thinking something like the video compilation might have been rushed, but is that farfetched? Rushed in a technical sense I mean? by no means am I criticising the release itself because I am totally psyched just to have the videos (FINALLY! :) ). But is it just me noticing this or has anyone yes noticed it? I have to admit, I'd love to see someone along the lines of an updated LE-type release. This time my actual comments on the videos themselves :) It's so cool to finally be able to see her videos. I saw God only once on MTV in early 1994 and I was way deep inside the storage area so I didn't try to tape it nor did I get LE or UtP at the time, and I saw Hey Jupiter a couple of times in '96, and again, didn't tape it :( The only other time we know MTV has shown Tori videos have been Spark and JS this year. Did they show CALS in '96? Anyway- Most of the videos (anything post-LE since the LE video was one of the first things from Tori I grabbed up :) ) I was seeing for the first time and I am totally blown away :) The production value of all the videos is beyond excellent and the concept of varied interpretations of her songs enters the visual element when one sees both versions of 'Cornflake Girl'. You get a different feel for the song in each version :) 'Past The Mission' made even more sense after seeing the video. And the video for 'God' makes that song look far less anti-religious than most people seem to think :) Got to ask though, what she thought of all those rats and snakes! I'd love to have seen some sort of documentary footage in between the videos to see her comments about that :) 'Pretty Good Year'- just a well-made video :) Seeing the video makes me wonder if she originally intended it to be last on UtP instead of first. It just has that feel to it when seeing the video. going on- 'Caught A Light Sneeze' was visually intense and after viewing a couple of times I got an impression of the song that was a little darker than what I've gotten just hearing it. Take a look at the way it starts and at how it unfolds from there. Am I the only one thinking that in a very abstract way the video depicts a near-death experience? She seems to tumble between Earth and the air- moving back and forth between 'here' and the afterlife perhaps? The way the images of the ground and the air rotate around each other. Think about it :) Hey Jupiter- the version synched with the video with is the Dakota Mix which to me sounds just as haunting as the album version even with the extra 'punch' added. But seeing the video adds a more errie feeling to it. I found myself wondering what else was going on in the video- how did the fire start? What was going on before the fire? And I've never seen Tori look like that before :) The little girl 'rescuing' her and leading her to safety: could the girl be a representation of Tori as a child, and the 'rescue' symbolizing a return to innocence perhaps? The child saving the adult Tori. Talula: I love this video! The scientists 'studying' her just gave it a neat, weird-but-cool look, and seeing her separated from the harpsichord with both of them inside their own plastic enclosures was a really neat touch, and the look of determination on her face when she cuts her way out of the plastic was just priceless :) Cuts her way out and just steps over to the harpsichord and starts playing, no big deal :) Spark: rare example of one I had actually seen before the compilation :) Raspberry Swirl: Wow! totally visually abstract and yet it fits the song perfectly. The start was paced perfectly with the start of the song (love the 'crunch-crunch-crunch' of the opening of the song anyway). Synched up perfectly with her 'Let's go'. The only thing I couldn't quite figure out was the running through the field, but the dance floor shots fit perfectly. And is it just me or does the man on the dance floor look like an older version of John Cage on 'Ally McBeal'? :) Jackie's Strength: Even more fitting that I happened to see this video for the first time just two days prior to the anniversary of the assasination. I really liked the way the video made her taxi ride look like a trip through her life leading up to that moment. Black and white filming really added to the look of the video. my comments of the compilation, yours may vary :) you can find me on icq: :) phoenyxx 23284355 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Nov 1998 14:11:33 EST From: Freque79@aol.com Subject: War? Can anyone verify if this is true or not? * Secondly, I do not have a ticket for the NJ show, so i am planning to go early in the hope that the Box Office is releasing tickets the morning of the show. Does anyone know, or can find out if, this is or is not going to happen. Someone has told me she thinks they may be releasing any extra tickets right before the show, in the evening and not in the morning? Handley" Subject: Re: Northern Lad I like these interpretations, always did like Beth's when she first posted it! But one thing confuses me about that. Throughout the song, she expresses sadness and loneliness, and it sounds to me as if she still loves the Northern Lad, so why would she be advising us to go when we know the things that are special in a relationship are over? But, then I can answer my own question. Perhaps it's advice that when you know you are not loved back the way you love someone, you have to realize that you deserve better and need to gather all your strength to leave the relationship to find someone who *does* love you as you deserve to be loved.... I also agree with Ken Tough, who feels Northern Lad is not just one guy, but a combination of men that she has had relationships with. Or she could be putting herself in the position of 'How would I feel if this were the way it was with Mark?" or that it was written at a bad time in their relationship. Remember, they were together for what, at least 3 years, so you know they definately had their ups and downs. One thing about the first line "Had a northern lad, well not exactly had" could also be harking back to BfP days where she learned that she was stealing other men's fire instead of creating her own. Maybe she means that she has learned that you never "have" any one. Of course, this song has it's own special meaning to me and it's different than the things I've offered here :) Thanks, Stephanie Stephanie Master Guru wrote: > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Kristen M Felicetti > To: > Sent: Saturday, November 21, 1998 11:13 AM > Subject: Northern Lad > > > > >"when you're only wet because of the rain". > >I've always had my own meaning for that line. Its a great book, but very dark and symbolic--so give it a try if you havent yet. Anyway, i came across the following quote on page 85 (of my book anyway): "'If only they could get a message to us,' cried Ralph desperately. 'If only they could send us something grownup a sign or something.'" Now, Cooling mentions a message to Piggy, and not Ralph, but Ralph is talking to Piggy in this quote. And Piggy gets killed in a horrible way--murdered actually. Its part of the symbolism of the loss of innocence and the degradation into savagery by the boys on the island. Perhaps this murder is the message passed on from Jesus. I wish I could elaborate more, but I dont know the lyrics to Cooling very well. And then there is Pandora's Aquarium..."the Lord of the Flies was diagnosed as sound." Well, in the book the lord of the flies (aka the devil) was symbolized as a boar's head on a stick. Maybe this is the "piggy" that got the message fom Jesus through Tori (or whoever "me" happens to be in the song). Well, the boar's head talks to a kid named Simon and tells him that the evil on the island is not an external monster, but the dark side of the boys themselves. More thoughts on this anyone? Then, in i i e e e, (this one is a little farfetched) Tori mentions "theres no sign of a parachute". Well, the "monster" on the island was actually a dead paratrooper animated by wind blowing his parachute so that he seemed to be sitting up and looking around. In i i e e e this could mean that dead is dead and there isnt even a parachute to make it seem alive. AND ONE MORE THING...im sure this is a coincidence, but the cover art for my book LOTF and the cover art for the single that Cooling is on (Spark, UK) look very similar! The book has a boy with his hands on his head and Tori has her hands above her head, but jeez, it freaked me out... Just my thoughts. Input would be appreciated.
