I'm thrilled to be reading some meaningful discussion with regard to Tori's amazingly dense and nuanced lyrics. It's wild when you discover that another ToriFreak is interpreting a song in the same manner. Anyway, here are a few "different" thoughts on a few lines. A LITTLE DUST NEVER STOPPED ME NONE I think this fits in with the "cowboy" motif because I associate "the West" with vast expanses of dusty terrain. This is an assertion of "toughness." I can take the rough conditions; I can take the ups and downs of this relationship (and relationships in general). HE LIKED MY SHOES, I KEPT THEM ON This is Tori at her best, with multiple meanings. Yes, I agree with the shoe fetish, i.e., screwing with her shoes on, whether cowboy (cowgirl) boots, platforms (a la Playboy Mommy), or come-fuck-me red pumps. I also agree, however, that keeping her shoes on is a way of keeping an escape route/hatch open. It gives the song a tentative feeling, sort of suspenseful, emphasized (for me) by the guitar triplets (?). - --SKIP-- YOU'RE JUST TOO USED TO MY HONEY (NOW) Somebody wrote that they thought that this referred to her "womanhood". I'd like to get a little more graphic and propose that she's talking about vaginal secretions (pardon my clinical vocabulary)--something sticky and sweet (?) (I wouldn't know, I'm a fag), but also something distinctive and individualistic. It's like, "This is great stuff, I'm proud of it, but you're just getting too used to it, you're getting bored and looking elsewhere." (Makes me think of "warm little diamond" in "Blood Roses".) In any case, bravo to those of you who got this discussion started. THIS is the sort of exchange of ideas that I was looking for when I subscribed. I'd love to get your feedback. What can I say? These three jobs are killing me. I figure that a full-fledged review would be pretty silly at this point, but I'd still like to share with you a few notes that I scribbled down while I was in the throes of our goddess' performance. I've been following the song counts, and I have to laugh. It just so happens that Tori didn't play any of the four songs from Choirgirl that I was dying to hear at the concert: Black-Dove (January), Hotel, Northern Lad, Playboy Mommy. Nevertheless, it was still a fantastic performance. Before "Bells for Her," Tori said something like: "You've probably noticed that I write songs about girls who diss each other." Then she said something about ruining a best-friendship. I could SWEAR that she skipped a verse, though! The one with my favorite line: "Now she seems to be sand under his shoes/There's nothing I can do." Somebody who was there: Am I crazy? When she played with the Teletubby doll before quiet time, she sort of improvised a little diddy about it being "a holy creature with markings of purity...I'm a Dipsy." Hey, Jupiter was a real treat during quiet time. She ROCKETED those high notes. I think the straight teenage boys next to me were crying. I remember thinking, "Yes, there IS hope for the next generation!" Part of her improvised lyrics on the ROCKING version of Waitress went something like: "I'm gonna go where she goes I'm gonna get me one of those I believe in something I believe in that girl I believe she's my Jesus" My only criticism about the "band sound" was that at times, her voice and the piano got lost among all that other sound. It was like you could hear one or the other (voice or piano), but not together. I remember reading some of your reviews where you said the same thing. Sooooo, I hope this has been informative, especially for those lucky shits who will be seeing Tori again on the rest of the tour. - --Teddy Bear P.S. Oops, I forgot the most interesting "added" lyric, during the "Horses" encore: "I'm looking for seraphim." (angels represented as babies in religiously inspired art--could this be a reference to her miscarriage?) If anyone noticed woj with two other guys, I was the one without the glasses. I wish I was one of those people who could give a detailed accounting of every moment, but my memory simply isn't that good. (hopefully someone else has already sent a set list to the other Mike). I'll just share a few impressions. The taping started late (which I'm told is rather the norm), but the long wait on the sidewalk was well worth it. We were seated in the back row, but in this case that meant the fourth row so we were plenty close. I think the studio held about 250 people, but I'm not at all sure of that number. Suffice it to say that it was a very small and intimate setting. As those who have seen the show know, the seating is arranged so that the audience sits in a circle with the performers in the middle, and while we were in the back we were also seated so that Tori was facing us, so those glimpse of her we were able to catch while craning our necks to look over and around those seated in front of us were always very worthwhile glimpses. We were also in front of the sound board and got to hear Mark tapping his foot and making other noises during many of the songs. Tori was in great spirits and seemed to really be enjoying herself, and that was reflected in her performance. Prior to last night I had only seen three shows on this tour, more because I didn't want to deal with Tori's audiences than because I didn't want to see Tori, and this show easily surpassed all of them. I think this was because of the combination of a brilliant performance by Tori (and the band) and the quiet that was enforced by the setting. The audience expressed it's appreciation enthusiastically between the songs, but was hushed during the songs themselves and while Tori was talking. As for the set list, as I said I don't trust my memory enough to try to give a complete listing, but I will share some of the highlights, which for me were those songs she did without the band. She apparently hadn't decided in advance what songs she was going to do (a fact reflected by the set the camera woman behind me had), so after some thought she started out with "Take To The Sky"!!! When that was done she talked a bit about how it seemed her favorite songs didn't make the albums (as "Take" hadn't made LE) and then launched into a wonderful performance of "Hey, Jupiter." I was a bit sad that she only did two solo songs (since the set list had her down as doing "3 or 4"), but when she came back at the end of the show she played one of the songs I had most wanted to hear, "Cooling". All the songs with the band were great too, but those are the ones I'm not 100% sure on, so I'll let someone else (maybe woj) talk about those. In effect the taping was just like a regular (though of course extremely intimate) concert. There were a couple of short breaks that wouldn't have happened at a regular show, with Tori getting her makeup touched up and a few technical changes being made, but there were no retakes or anything like that. During one of the breaks Tori offered to take a couple of questions from the audience, and fortunately there were a couple of people whose brains didn't freeze up. The first question was, "How are you enjoying married life?" and after saying that her husband didn't want her to talk about it she whispered into the mike, "It's fantastic!" The second question was about what she would be doing is she wasn't doing music, and after some thought Tori said that it would probably be something with sewage or wine and then went on to explain what she meant. It was pretty amusing and I'm really looking forward to seeing what she had to say to David Byrne during the interview segments (which had been taped earlier in the day). It was a really amazing evening and I feel very lucky to have had the chance to be there. My grandma actually FOUND the leaflet that was handed out on her street when they filmed "Jackie's Strength" there!! Many of you may not know my story about the video, but here goes again in case any of you are interested: Well, Tori chose (I still have NO idea how she found it!) my grandmother's street in Calne, Wiltshire, England (where I spent a HUGE chunk of my childhood) to film the "Jackie's Strength" video! The street is called Wansdyke Drive. Tori thought the street looked like a typical american street (which is weird since it is a retirement community in ENGLAND!?) Anyway, somehow Tori found Curzon Park (the name of the subdivision) and they transformed it into an american looking street! My grandmother said they used an abandoned house that was for sale JUST ACROSS THE STREET from her house to film the indoor scenes!! They bought in americn cars to park in the driveways, covered up the street sign and gave it an american name, (something like Montrose ave? not really sure what my grandmother said!) and they handed out these leaflets telling who Tori was and what the production crew would be doing there. Anyway, my grandmother found it!! I'm so excited because this is probably REALLY rare! I go to England this Thursday and plan to bring it back and scan it so you all can see what it is about. I wish I hadn't moved to the US now since Tori was right were I spent my childhood, AND she was in a wedding dress!! Man, I truly missed out! Oh well, I'm just so happy my grandma found the leaflet! (she must keep everything since the video was filmed earlier this year) What makes me really mad though, is that I was there in March and apparently the video was filmed in April or May! If ONLY I stayed longer! ARRRGGGHHH!! Oh well, just thought I'd let you all know, and I'll take pictures of the street and maybe scan them too! Unfortuanately, I have yet to see my grandmother's house in the video, but it's weird 'coz I KNOW where everything is when I see the video. It really is a strange feeling. Anyway, gotta go! I hope you all didn't get bored with this rambling message, but I'm just real hyped right now and had to get it out!!
