This is from Richard Handal (hope he doesn't mind me using this again%^). Here goes: >>Maybe you guys can help me?!?! In "Not the Red Baron" what does the guy >>in the begining say to Tori? It really bothers me I can't understand him. > >I've always wondered about it too. The extent of my knowledge is that there >is not actually a person talking to Tori (that we can hear) but that there >is a recording of two dutch pilots speaking (in dutch). Tori seems to be >talking to someone in the background about the recording (Tori says: "What >Language?" Person who we can't hear suggests something and then Tori says >"No, Dutch."). Has anyone managed to translate the tape or at least figure >out what it is generally about? > > Will It's better than that. When Tori performed live in Den Haag in March this year I managed to speak to Marcel van Limbeek, who assisted in the recording of the CD. The story is as follows: during the recording of the CD, "Red baron" was one of those one-take tracks. They were actually testing a new mike, as an other one had broken down. Marcel and Rob were talking about technical stuff through walkie-talkies. (Are they called that where you live?) They were just discussing the sound level and the compression or something like that. Somehow, Tori picked up the talking in her headphones and asked what language they were using. Marcel replied "Dutch", and asked if they should stop talking. Tori motioned to them to go on, however, and Marcel asked if they should talk in English. Tori answers: "No, Dutch", which is what you hear on the recording. The talking does _sound like_ pilots, but that's just what inspired Tori to the lyrics. "Not the Red Baron" was recorded in one take. I hope this clears up the confusion about this particular question!! Meet&Greet continued... Hi everybody. Beth: Thank you very much for your storytellers report. It is wonderful that you share the privilege of having been a part of it with us. An atmosphere like Tori talking and playing to a lot of friends in a living room - that must have been something incredibly special. I look forward to see the result, eventually. From your words it seems that you all did a very good job in supporting Tori - thank you. Gina: Thank you for your honest report about your Meet&Greet experiences. I think that you certainly have all right to feel like you do and that you write in a very fair and appropriate way. But I do not think there is an easy solution. It would be nice if all people attending a Meet&Greet would sit together and decide who deserves to see Tori most on that particular day. On the day you mention in your post, you would have certainly been one of them. It would really be even more fascinating if it would work like this - I just do not think this is very realistic. Because everybody would have very good reasons to meet Tori - including the ones that have met Tori before (e.g. it might be their last show and they want to say good-bye). Unfortunately, there are not many ways to make sure that you are able to talk to Tori. None of them is comfortable. Either arriving very early for the pre-show Meet&Greet or leaving the show before the last song to be in front for the after-show Meet&Greet. And even this is no guarantee, because although Tori likes to meet us, she might be too tired or too much in a hurry or just not feeling well on that particular day. I absolutely agree with your opinion about people selling pictures at Meet&Greets. If somebody really would ask more for a picture than he paid for making the copy of it himself, this would be at least as bad as selling an audience bootleg for a high price. About selfishness of frequent Meet&Greet participants: I believe that Tori really likes at least some of these people. And if she recognizes them, she also tries to communicate with them even if they are not in the first row. I heard her adressing one of them at a Meet&Greet with the words 'my dear friend'. I believe she gets a lot of energy out of meeting her fans and especially those people that she recognizes and has some kind of distant relationship with. Is it selfish of the frequent M&G participants to try to continue this at the next show? Maybe - but who would really behave differently in this situation, honestly. Is it all fair? Probably not. But how could it be? The alternative might be no Meet&Greets at all - which would be much worse in my opinion. Does anybody have other suggestions? I would be possible to simply form a line and try to approach Tori at the Meet&Greet one after another. But if Tori would only spend 30 seconds on average with each person in line, this would already mean spending 30 minutes at the Meet&Greet with 60 people present. She just cannot do that. Things like this were possible during Dew Drop Inn - it is different now. And I am very happy that Tori gets even more attention and has more fans now. She deserves it. Everybody enjoy 'your' shows, Eric (with a 'c') ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 00:31:23 PST From: "Jacqueline Starr" Subject: thoughts on providence hi everyone :) i should have written this last night but i got lazy. hehe. the providence show was my second tori experience on this tour and ever. i was *not* disapointed! the meet and greet was chaotic. my friend and i got there on the late side and there looked to be aproximately 130-150 people. i did see some people with red numbers on their hands but the whole numbering system seemed to fall apart...per usual so it seems. (hi to the fellow RDT list member from right near the venue that i met at the m & g :) i never caught your name. nice to meet someone familiar with what's been going on on the list!) *Precious Things*- What can i saw about this song that hasn't been said a thousand times over? the friend i went with (a tori concert virgin) turned to me after this song and said "This is the best show i've ever been to." (she's seen Rush, Barenaked Ladies, Lollapalooza '93...among others) this just amused the hell out of me. hehe. *She's Your Cocaine*- I wasn't expecting to hear this song, for some reason. It's never really been a favorite of mine but live...it was amazing. *Space Dog*- my friend in i were talking about this song in the car! i really like this one with the band. the breaks sound great. *Caught a Lite Sneeze*- i miss the harpischord on this one. granted, i would never turn my back on the band playing it, but the harpischord is just...it belongs with it! *Horses*- again...everything that could describe this has already been said. *iieee*- i'm glad i got to see this one again. it wasn't as long as the one at the Fleet in August, but i think i prefered it that way. *Never Seen Blue (solo)*- she talked for a bit before this one. it was a nice change from the last show where she said next to nothing. she mentioned how a guy had mentioned to her that she played part of this at some New England show years ago before it was finished so she wanted to play it for him. i really liked it. *nods* *Baker Baker (solo)*- i was so glad to hear this one! it was beautifully done and she seemed to be really immersed in it. *Purple People*- yay!! this and Upside Down are my favorite bsides. when i heard the intro i just about died. hehe. it was wonderful! *Hotel*- i've just recently begun to appreciate the studio version of this song. this will definately help me along. the lights were fun and the end was amazing. *Graveyard (acapella)*- this one seemed to come out of right field. it took me a sec to figure out what it was. her voice sounded perfect. i dare anyone who says she doesn't have a voice to listen to her sing this one. *Tear In Your Hand*- not a song i was really expecting to hear. (you ever just get your mind set of what you think you're gonna hear and then when it's something else, it just throws you off?...) *Waitress*- was glad to see this one come up. (though it usually does...) i really enjoyed this song at the fleet and i wanted my friend to experience it. :) i love the way the crowd seems to get so absorbed into it. *Talula*- yay! another one from boy for pele! this song was fun with the band. it's so much better than it was with the canned music it had on the ddi tour. *Raspberry Swirl*- it's all already been said. although, the other i went to, i was sitting next to the stage and i didn't really experience the lights as i should have been. all i can say is wow. they were kick ass during this song. i loved the raspberry/green lights bouncing rythmically all over the place... *Landslide(solo)*- ahh...perfect. when i saw her walking on stage alone, i was secretly hoping she'd do this song. her version of it is great and i just wanted to see this one. it was everything i hoped it would be. *nods to herself* *Pandora's Aquarium*- a wonderful way to draw the evening to a close. she seemed to be holding on to this one in the end...drawing the notes out beautifully... overall, i was extremely pleased with the entire show. the crowd seemed very well behaved (taking into consideration some of the stories i've heard!), the sound was good and everything seemed to fall into place. tori seemed much more animated than she was in Boston. she talked much more and seemed to be having a great time. the after show meet and greet was PACKED. my friend and i drove by it and half the audience looked to be out there. the place was a mob scene. *shrugs* i guess that's about it from here. happy concert going! -jackie ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 14:36:41 PST From: "Honey Drops" Subject: Re: atlanta 8/17 & 8/18 boots hello EWF .. i know this might sound dumb but what exactly is : 2:1 ? i just wrote someone to make a trade and i assumed 2:1 meant 2 for 1 .. meaning i get 2 ? if i am wrong please correct me ... i know i'm a geek .. lol " Sugar Queen " ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 14:10:33 PST From: "Honey Drops" Subject: Re: China Single i would like a copy too = ) >From: Katapilla7@aol.com >Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 17:42:15 EST >To: tori-boot@world.std.com, precious-things@smoe.org >Subject: China Single >Reply-To: Katapilla7@aol.com > > >Hello every one I want ot find a unopened or opened but in perfect condition >china single. I've never heard the song, but it seems really interesting from what y'all have been saying. In that vein, I really like the song interpretations that crop up on the list. I'd like to get some input into UtP. To me, it is Tori's most unfathomable material. So if you have any thoughts on the songs, I'd like to hear them, especially PGY (I"m so close to understanding this one but not quite there), PtM, SD, and Y,A. I'm working on ComT myself and reaching a point where I feel I can discuss it intelligently. Tori's little clue was: "This piano-pounding singer went from pretty in pink to Under the Pink after she was crowned in 1981." just thought it was cute. later, Ula ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 21:28:09 -0500 From: *Blue~Faerie* Subject: binghamton hey, is anyone going to the binghamton show, or been to the broome county arena??? i was wondering where my seats were located. jenn - -- ************************************************* Rivers of milk are running dry, Can't you hear the dolphins crying? I had a couple questions. First, I was wondering what happened to the Quote of the Day list. I think the server changed and I didn't quite change with it. If anybody can tell me how to resubscribe, I'd...give you virtual cookies or something.:) My second question is about a lyric in "Honey". I'm not sure I fully understand its meaning, so what do you all think it means when she says "and I think I could leave your world/if she was the better girl/so when we died/I tried to bribe the undertaker"? I assume "we" refers to her and the guy, but I could be wrong on that...thoughts right now on this? I haven't been to a Tori show yet, but I hear about the folks who have met her a zillion times and I think give the rest of us a chance. I will be seeing her at the Ithaca show. I posted to this list last week asking about the meet'n'greets. I didn't recieve a lot of help and not much specific info (those of you who did contribute, thank you and I am grateful, though still confused). So, here's Gina who's tried to meet Tori 3 or 4 times and has not been able to and I have to think to myself, gee, I'll have one shot at one meet'n'greet, so why bother? Do you think all of you meet'n'greet veterans could just give us a good and specific guide to getting our two minutes with Tori? We are all on this list because something about Tori has touched our lives, all of our lives. No one here has any more valid connection to her or her work than any other one of us (unless you happen to be someone in one of her songs or a freind of hers which I have to believe is not true for 90% of us). And we'd like the opportunity to tell her and thank her. That's all. And now that I've made enemies, I'll sign off Tom "the snakes they are my kin." ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 22:40:48 -0500 From: Erin Martin Subject: Golden Gun Hi! I was going through some copies of interviews that were emailed to me and I found this reference to the much-discussed "man with the golden gun" lyric, which , imho, confirms that this man is God. This article is from Hot Press, Feb. 23, 1994. Tori says: "The idea that God is sexless is a brilliant form of control because it means we can never be in the image of Gun unless we're sexless too." I assume the article I've received is accurate and that's no typo or anything. So she's saying that God thinks he knows so much, yet lets women do this to each other? And God thinks he knows all about hatred and betrayal but has no idea what it's like among women? And God supposedly is such a pure man (golden gun) but has overlooked this tragedy during creation? I don't know. I just thought that was interesting... Yeah, it was as nuts as I'd seen it. I was glad I had nothing pressing to do with her that day, since when I arrived at 11:15am I was assigned number 50. > i did see some people with red numbers on their hands but the whole > numbering system seemed to fall apart...per usual so it seems. This is confusing to me. I was like six rows back, and surely there were around 50 people in those six rows. Clearly, you were pretty far back, Jackie. What was it that makes you say it fell apart? > overall, i was extremely pleased with the entire show. The shows have really developed into a fine, mellowed wine. I told one fellow after this show that it was kinda laid back for her and he thought I was nuts. But if she really wants to hit you with all she's got, you better get outta the way. The band is quite organic these days, and the songs come easily from all of them. It's wonderful seeing shows these days. And I'm so relieved that she seems to be getting *happier* as time passes rather than the reverse, which was what last tour did to her. Believe me, I loved the last tour and was sad when it ended, but this time I'm more concerned for her state of mind *after* the tour ends. She said she was lonely on the last tour. If she doesn't have other things with which to occupy herself after this one ends, having come to be as integrated with those guys as she's become, when they all go off on their other projects and she's by herself again, that's when she's *really* gonna need to stave off loneliness. Let's all hope she will by finding other cool things to do. :-) Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #376 *************************************
