Because in Boston (sneak preview - I have it on tape) she actually enunciated each syllable - to the knee. It's very clear. I will grant that Tori MAY have changed the lyrics when doing the song live. It happens. But I keep listening to the studio version of that song, and I hear it very clearly. The RI show from tonight came out very good. Only problem is although I was told it had automatic reverse (recorder continues to record from one side to the next without having to flip over), it does not. So the end of "Hotel" is cut and I only got the end of "Graveyard" (next song). So side B pretty much starts with Tear in Your Hand. Anyway, its still good, although the songs cut is kind of annoying. So its up for trade if you don't mind those annoyances. I'd like to trade right now only for Plugged shows I don't have though, since I can't get them any other way. Well the Houston meet-and-greet went really well. Since so many people showed up, the group of people I had become aquanted with decided it was time to put the number system into action. Everyone lined up in rows of about 9 across in order of their #'s. There was no one out of place (well not in the first few rows at least!) and there was no pushing and shoving. Everyone was just real calm and it went great. I think Tori and her bodyguards were impressed with the whole thing, which is good. It looks like I was just lucky, I guess, since a lot of the reviews of meet-and-greets I have read have been awful. Basically, the # system works if the right people decide to take the initiative and not stand for pushing, etc. Also, letting everyone know that Tori will be take away if everyone pushes is a good thing! But, hey, this was my only Tori show, so I didn't experience any pushing, etc. However, I briefly attended the night meet-and-greet (with someone who I had met inside and she didn't know these happened) but I left before Tori came since I had already met her, and felt it was unfair for me to be there again. (even though I was basically at the back, but that could mean someone could get that little bit closer) The night one seemed more pushy and uncontrolled from what I saw of it, but that is probably since they had no numbers then. Just thought I would put in my two cents. Marcus ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 11:27:21 PST From: "Homer Simpson" Subject: Evanston goers... I skipped the meet and greet and instead spent the day with my boyfriend exploring Providence. I love that city. If you only saw downtown, you don't know the half of it! :) We went to the park, rode the carousel, saw the "music temple", went to the zoo and saw the baby polar bear, then bummed around the Brown campus. I really thought Tori would have loved the park, but I found out later that they drove straight from NYC. I won't go song by song, but Caught a Lite Sneeze segued into Hurt (NIN) and my mouth dropped wide open. This was part of the song, band and all, and very different from the acapella intro from the DDI tour. If you blinked you missed it. (Can ears blink?) Second mouth on the floor moment - Graveyard. It was absolutely stunning - - acapella. And she sang one line that went something like "I feel you here with me Poppa." Ahhh. Raspberry Swirl seemed to last forever. Very cool. Her stories were cute - she said everyone was "hangaded over" and that she was in a spacey mood (and that the PPAC was spacey - yeah, the security people were EVIL!) and she also said some nasty stuff about VH1 StoryTellers (although after reading Bethey's synopsis, I understand why!). I was able to meet Jon Evans backstage, and he is just the nicest guy ever (next to my boyfriend of course!). For those of you who met/saw me before but not after the show, no, I didn't meet Tori. Last comment - I was extremely excited to hear Hotel, but I realized that it lacks...something that the album version has. Probably the programmed drums, etc. (ha!) It doesn't quite work live, IMHO. But Purple People does, and Talula with the band is ALMOST as good as Talula with the harpischord. What would they do with Blood Roses? I wish I knew... She did a great job of summing up that amazing evening for everyone, not to mention giving those of us that were there a great way of remembering what our feeble minds were already forgetting and blurring together. :) A good time was definitely had by all. I'd just like to add some of my own memories and impressions, for anyone who's interested to read. One thing that definitely struck me was Tori's habit of drinking from her water bottle, and then spitting the water on the stage. I wish I had gotten the chance to ask her why she does that, although I probably wouldn't have anyway. She did make a comment to Kevin Aucoin about not wanting to have bladder problems though, so perhaps that was why. It was cute. Another comment that struck me was that when she was talking about her reasons for writing Hey Jupiter, she mentioned that she had called John (her tour manager) during the Under the Pink tour and told him that she felt she had to end the tour, because her heart was broken. It was heartbreaking to hear her talk about it. She answered the question very abstractly though, evidently because she was not entirely comfortable talking about it. When the question was asked, she kind of hesitated, and then made a hilarious gesture in which she pretended to stick her finger down her throat. Also, when introducing Northern Lad (the first time around), she was talking about how when a relationship gets to a certain point of intensity, she starts to have trouble with words, so she writes songs instead to express how she feels. She said something like, "You know, when it gets to be like peanut butter and jelly between adults," while smashing her hands together. I'll never think of peanut butter and jelly the same way! I also loved the part when she was talking about her past jobs playing in Mariott lounges. She began playing some lounge-style music, while laying her head down on the piano and pretending to fall asleep, only to be woken up in a start by someone warning her that the boss was coming. I know that the experience was extremely draining for her (At one point, she was backstage having a little pow-wow with John and the director, and she kept repeating melodramatically "I'm going to kill myself when this is over. I'm going to kill myself when this is over!"), but she pulled it off perfectly. She has the ability to just capture the attention of everyone in the room, and have them hanging on her every word. She sure knows how to keep everyone laughing too! So there you have it, some of my lasting impressions of the taping. I wish that all of her fans could have been there, because it really was for the fans before anyone else. Not like a talk show appearance, or even MTV Unplugged, which are meant to appeal to a broader audience. It was an experience that I will never forget, and feel lucky to have been a part of. Oh, I'd also love to talk to anyone else who was there, so if you get a chance, drop me a line. :) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 19:12:04 EST From: Sandylion1@aol.com Subject: Nov 24th Delaware Show!!! Second, i'm not disappointed anymore. I'm not sure whether it was the crowd, or the venue, or the gorgeous day in providence (I was the guy who sat outside the theatre reading all day) Anyways, this was definitely one of the best performances i've ever seen. The crowd seemed to be of a more *mature* fashion, perhaps the big thrill of the new album has gone away, and some of the newer 13 year old fans aren't there anymore, but nonetheless, i'd like to personally thank everyone who was at the show for being respectful, and not screaming and yelling and acting like children :) Last review i had complained that i felt the emotional part wasn't there for me anymore, well, when she started playing Never Seen Blue, it came back =) Probably one of my personal best experiences, the entire day really. The people i met were unbelievably nice, and the guy who i sat next to that sold me the ticket was great too (i didn't have one before the show) So anyways, thats my rant, i don't remember the setlist even remotely close, but the experience is one i will always treasure. And thats a big huge thank you to not just Tori, but to the rest of you in the crowd too.
