Anyways, the CD case was just sorda sitting on my dresser, and my dad brought my computer up to dorm room today, and while he was waiting for something to load, he picked up the case for Little Earthquakes, and made this noise. I looked over and he held it up and said, "There's some subtle imagery for you." Me, kinda flushed, said, "You have to see the video for Silent All These Years to get it, Dad." "What's to get?" said my father. "It's pure shock value. Downright pornographic." Me: "No, Dad. If it was for shock value, there would just be phalluses on the back, but there isn't, is there? Besides, let's not get into that sort of thing, because if memory serves, there's a copy of Starland Vocal Band's Afternoon Delight in your guys' record collection..." Dad: "So anyways, about your computer..." Me and my dad have had other hilarious incidents with Tori, the first being when she performed Precious Things on Letterman, and it was two days before I was set to see her at Raleigh Memorial on the Pink Tour (my first Tori show) and my dad came home from work, paused, came back, looked at the TV, looked at me, and said in this funny, tight voice, "Did she just say 'fascist panties'?" And the other one that really sticks out is the poster I bought at said concert, which is from the Winter photo shoot, and it's black and white with Tori on the white horse, and it has a certain area of the horse's anatomy...um, *highlighted*, shall we say? =) I had it up on my wall, my dad comes in, looks at it a moment, and says, "Why did they do that?" Me: "Do what Dad?" "They made sure you'd notice the horse's...um..." Me: "DAD...it's just the shadows, jeez..." Dad: "I don't know how I feel about this..." Like I'm going to get into a discussion about horsey schlongs with my dad, puh-LEEZE... I was a little disappointed with The Tori Philes. It reminded me sort of the official biography, just video version with the fans summarizing it up. It was kind of cool for me, cause I'm a relatively new Tori Fan to see all the clips from the music videos. Though I definetly have to say they should play em more often! I watch MTV every now and then and I've seen a Tori video once, "Spark". And my friend watches MTV CONSTANTLY and she's only seen "Spark" also, maybe "Jackies' Strength". MTV kind of reminds me of magazines like Teen they put on what's "hot" right now. And then will turn their back on them right away the second they're not so popular to the public anymore. >Plus, they sorda lumped her fans into this "obsessive" category that >pissed me off. I think fans of almost any music star(mainstream or not) has some sort of obsessive group and it shows. Like today on Total Request, I saw these girls screaming over NSYNC every two seconds and when NSYNC came on you could just almost see them drooling(this is no offense to anyone on this list that likes NSYNC, though Toriphiles don't seem to be the type loving NSYNC). They looked obsessive. And while they didn't look cult obsessive like the way MTV sort of made the Toriphiles look the girls drooling over NSYNC came out looking a lot stupider. An in-depth look at Tori's fans would've been alot better. It would've been something that hasn't really been done much before. Let's hope Revue is better. It seems like it'll just be a Tori interview. Not a summarization of her life. Oh by the way, I'll just introduce myself. My name's Kristen. I'm 13. Well, I'd also be happy to tape any of the Tori cd's or tapes that I have. Email me :) - -HG ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 19:32:13 EDT From: PoetGrrlAC@aol.com Subject: Re: 'Rents and Tori <> just last night! my sister was in my room, and i had finally put on forgotten earthquakes (i couldn't take another second of her backstreet bastards), and crucify came on. she semi-likes Tori, not that she'll admit it to her teeny- bopper friends, and started singing into my lipstick (i know, it shoulda been a hairbrush, but she couldn't find one), "every day i crucify myself",and stepped out into the hall singing it. my mom, coming out of the bathroom heard, and demanded to know what she was singing. she happily said crucify, and mom asked where she heard it. "it's amanda's." she proclaimed, and went skipping down the hall, and mom demanded to know who sang "everyday i crucify myself". I sheepishly told her Tori Amos, knowing my chances of going to the concert would be decreased. she was like, amanda! that's blasphemous! i pretended not to know why, asking why. she said, "think. who was crucified?" now we're catholic, and my parents are republican. i am borderline christian/atheist, but haven't told them. they think i don't curse (my friend mila calls me dirtymandamouth, some weird play on dirtydishyfish), am gonna be a virgin till marriage (hahaha) , etc. i quickly started explaining it was about people trying to be everything, kinda improvising and (i admit it) lying a bit. she's like, "i think i should read some of her lyrics before you go to that concert". which terrified me. i knew if she read le,she'd object to pt, leather, and maybe me and a gun (i explained it was about her rape, and she's very against that, but still, i don't know how she'd feel about reading those lyrics). with utp, it would be god, waitress, and icicle. and bfthe booklet piglet pic would set her off. and then blood roses, father lucifer, pw, muhammad my friend, hye jupiter, way down, little amsterdam, maybe talula. and choirgirl, she'd be upset about rs, jackie's strength, northern lad, playboy mommy, she's your cocaine. i quickly explained crucify, pointing out that one night i had le on, and she didn't mind it. she plays piano, so she thought she must be nice. then i said she's a minister's daughter, she believes in the christian god (which is partly true), and she was like, amanda, minister'skids are sometimes the wildest. and i knew Tori was no angel. :) so i quickly got out of that mess. i just never play even remotely questionable Tori songs around my sister. i was so scared i'd get all my Tori stuff taken away. Lord! glad i'm not the only one whose parents can act weird about Tori. peace, manda c p.s. i told her i didn't think she'd like the concert. she agreed. i didn't want her to go, lest she play pw, little amsterdam, etc. whew! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Sep 1998 20:05:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Richard Handal Subject: Re: tori quote that is very important Kat posted a Tori quote from Ultra Sound, and then spoke: > "The most exciting thing I can do is to connect with somebody who has > something intelligent to say. So now I guess it isn't just us never met > tori people whining about it. Tori thinks the same thing. I find it interesting that none of the folks I've heard people complain about by name *ever* ask for an autograph, and that Tori said nothing in the above quote about folks who have seen her at multiple shows. And if anyone out there on this list thinks it means nothing to Tori to see familiar faces before the shows, I suggest you think again. She's out there on the road going from one town to the next day after day, and seeing a few people she knows here and there does her heart good, believe me. I don't think it's cool for the same people to monopolize her time at tons of shows one after the other, but neither do I think it's cool to hate people because they manage to get to a bunch of shows, and for them getting to the venues early enough to be up front at the barricades having come from maybe 300 miles away, when someone who lives less than an hour from the venue couldn't manage to get there until 2pm, and they then decide to complain about all the people up front at the barricades who were there since 10am because they met Tori before, and to blame a handful of regulars for their ending up five rows back at the barricades. I have to say, I've seen a lot of shows on this tour, and with luck, will see many more. I have no need to speak with her before every show, but things come up from time to time and I do want to interact with her sometimes. Most of the time I don't make a special effort to be early enough to be up front at the barricades because if I need to get a note to her or something that day I can give it to someone who's gonna be up front and let them give it to her for me. I do like hanging out with friends at the barricades and going to eat dinner after Tori's left to do the soundcheck, and if Tori sees me four or five rows back she's gonna say *something* to me, even if it's just, "Hi, Richard, how are you?" Am I to be hated for responding to her when she addresses me first? And things come up sometimes and Tori has expected me to see her at the venue at a specific show for a specific reason, and I'll be *damned* if I'm going to feel bad about being able to talk some to her at a show-- especially if she *wants* me to see her that day! That's just plain goofy. I modestly propose a little more perspective and a little less hatred and jealousy. I don't usually talk about my own stuff like this but this is starting to really grate on my nerves.
