So, i settled back and fired up the VCR. a few minutes into the show she went to a tape at madison square garden and clips were shown of fans talking, (if you were at the orlando show and you are from the NY area and you talked to a tall girl with a sheep backpack from coral springs you were on the show). They cut and you see steve (one of tori's security guys) direct them to plug into the soundboard thing for sound check, then tori's up on stage singing "baker baker" then goes on to explain about sound checks, anyway to make a long decription even longer, they go backstage and tori comes out and the woman asks tori about her first concert (elton john, she was 11) and where tori went to college, which as we all know she didnt , but tori went on to talk about how the gay waiters at the bar she sang at taught her how to kiss and give blowjobs. the segment only lasted about 3 minutes (shorter than this write up). If a lot of you saw this and this is a major waste of mail i apologize, but i found it to be really random and wanted to share. I would like to know how you get the >things in without being caught...if one brand of tape is better etc... regarding sneaking your recording equipment into the venue, the *most* important thing, i've found, is to appear innocuous. security people zoom in on nervousness. if you are emanating uncertainty, they'll likely notice it and pay more attention to you. by the same token, being over-confident and brash won't help much either. just be cool and calm and careful. the second most important thing: for heaven's sake, DON'T PUT YOUR DECK IN A BAG OR BACKPACK! that's the *first* place which is searched and, unless you have a concealed section of your satchel, your deck will most certainly be found. a coat pocket is the second most likely place, so that's not a terribly better option. what i do is put it in my back pocket, behind my wallet (i have a rather small cassette deck, so perhaps not everyone will be able to pull this off). it's never been found there. in fact, i've never been frisked thoroughly enough that they even asked about my wallet. bringing a bag could be an effective decoy -- a sacrifical offering to the security folks who will find nothing therein (since you've stashed your deck elsewhere), let you by and feel like they've done their job. also, some comments on nad's reply: >At the low end is cassette. Expect to pay $50+ for a recorder. Use Maxell >XL-IIS, TDK SA-X, or TDK MA tapes for recording. for a decent cassette deck, expect to pay a little more than $50. however, don't pay too much since you'll be able to get a more durable and somewhat higher quality recording with a minidisc for not too much more incremental cost. plus, the microphones that most people will have available to them are not that great, so a higher priced cassette deck won't make a difference in terms of sound quality. as for tape type, only bother with the metal (tdk ma) tapes if your deck actually supports the type iv setting. maxell xl-ii or tdk sa should be more than sufficient for recording life music. normal tapes (maxell ur or tdk d) are probably sufficient, but they will wear out quicker with repeated playback, which is why you should at least spring for chrome tapes. >Keep a very close eye on >your watch, or you'll cut off songs (which sucks!). tori's running a pretty tight ship on this tour, so you'll be flipping a cassette either right after quiet time or in between the quiet time songs - -- depends on how long the band jams in the first half of the show. >IMHO, when you're booting the show itself, the mics are the most important >thing. You need a mic that's going to be able to handle the extra sound >that the band is putting out -- a cheap mic (or, even worse, the mic that's >built into your recorder) probably isn't going to cut it. this is, by far, the most important point. you could have the best recording equipment possible, but a bad mic will totally ruin it for you. i've been fortunate: the lapel mic that came with my aiwa cassette deck has performed excellently. however, most people will not be so lucky. for more information about microphones, check out the microphone faq at or the microphone section of the dat-heads faq at (that's an old edition of the faq, but i can't find a more recent version right now; this edition should still be useful). woj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 11:54:26 -0400 From: Beth Coulter Subject: Re: San Jose setlist.. Just letting you know there is a Tori snippet and pic in the new issue of Link: a College Television Network publication (August/September 1998). It is just a magazine that shows up in random college students mailboxes as junk mail. anyway, there is a small pic of Tori (from cover of Illinois Entertainer) and the article as follows: (pg. 55) FROM THE CHIORGIRL ARENA We caught Tori Amos a few years back at New York City's Beacon Theater, and she shook us all night long--right down to our spiritual and sexual foundations--like, we imagined, Prince used to do when he was Prince. Now touring behind her latest, From the Chiorgirl Hotel, he Cornflake Girl faces the daunting task of connecting on a personal level in impersonal arenas. Amos acknowledges that she's not playing "somebody's living room" anymore. And while she is performing a few acoustic numbers for intimacy's sake, the shows are, for the most part, "a buckle-your-seat-belt kind of thing." "It's a girl and her piano that found some boys who she digs and the wine is good," she says cryptically. Translation: You;ve gotta see the show because Amos has got a brand new band, which beats a solo, harpsicord-humming babe anyday. Check out Tori and her boys at these venus: *goes on to list tour schedule from 9/11-10/10* Im not sure how easy it is to get these mags, but if anybody wants to trade some 98 shows for this magazine, I might be able to scrounge up a few copies from my friends. Tori *needs* people up close to her when she plays, and if the front row of any given venue is more than a few feet back from the stage, indeed, expect it to be a "standing" show where Joel goes out to tell folks in the first few rows that they can stand/dance right up in front of the stage if they like. I'm not real pleased to have to stand for an entire show to see from close up, and there may even be some loudly-voiced feelings against all the standing folks coming from those immediately behind them which can make for a lot of tension, but Tori needs faces up close and it's gonna happen--period. I suggest either resigning yourself to standing at those shows or prepare to ask for a refund to assuage your level of upset if you had what seemed to have been really great seats, only to have them turn into "obstructed view" ones. If a good floor plan of the venue is available (and many of them are available on the internet), try to determine if the front row is more than a few feet back from the stage to try to get a feel for the chances that it'll be a standing show. > >Also has anyone had a press-pass for this tour. In fact, in Manchester on May 21, a photographer continued taking photos well past the allotted two songs, and I heard she had her film confiscated. I suggest making sure of exactly how many songs this is really supposed to be allowed. And yes, it's a common practice. On the inside of one of the inserts, it also has listed the UPC Number for the CD, and the other does not. And on the CD Itself, one lists made in Germany and the other does not, which led me to believe it was a german pressing, but BOTH list Made In Germany on the back cover? Any ideas? (Nad?) It's a live album, taken from the Plugged tour. I found it in a store for $45. And I was wondering if anyone who's heard it, thinks it's a good buy. And how are the quality recordings of the songs? If anyone can help me, please e-mail me privately. I can't even get to the point where the cd icon appears on >my desktop. :( > >- --Michael Okay here is what I know about these things. I do not actually have the JS single yet. But I can make some educated guesses. First of all QuickTime 2.1.2 and Quicktime 3.0 install themselves in different places. So I've noticed that if something was made with/for quicktime 2.1.2. But is played on a computer that only has 3.0 it doesn't work. I discovered this when I got QuickTime 3.0 installed it and uninstalled quicktime 2.1.2 right away. I thought I wouldn't need it anymore, then I tried to load the LAUNCH CD with Tori on it. This disc was distributed with 2.1.2. And it wouldn't work until i reinstalled 2.1.2. I don't know why Apple would make a new version of Quicktime that wouldn't automatically work with all old software, but for some reason they did. So I would have to say that the program on the JS single automatically assumes the program locations for 2.1.2. I don't know if this makes much sense to anybody. But I'm pretty sure this is what is going on with some people. As for unreadable discs. CD-ROM drives are in my experience notriously unreliable with enhanced CD's and other hybrid formats. Sametimes there is just a slight idiosyncracy in a disc that makes it not work in 1 out of 10 drives but otherwise it would work perfectly. Ultimately an enhanced portion is only offered as an extra. It's a nice freebie throw in for fun. If you play the disc on a regular audio CD player all extra data is ignored so I imagein there is no implied promise from any record company that the enhanced portion of a disc will work, or that a computer will even read the disc at all. The only way I was able to see the movies was by saving them to my hard drive. When just viewing them by the cd, the picture just jumped and there was no sound at all except a very loud noise in the beginning. So you might want to give that a try. The sound jumped a little bit but there was a big improvement. bye jennifer ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 16:46:24 PDT From: "Kevin Myra" Subject: help? ri show hi everyone. Just a random thought that I had. Early on when FtCGH was released people were speculating that "She's Your Cocaine" could possible be a comment on the relationship of Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain. Then seeing that Tori came on stage for the encore in a leopard skin outfit. If I remember right the song was cocaine. Then thinking about the new song entitled "Celebrity Skin" made me wonder if Tori was saying something or hinting to us that the song is indeed about Ms. Love. Just wanted to throw this thought out there. I make no claim that I actually know what I am talking about. For all that matters Tori might have just been Tori and wanted to wear it for fun. Unfortunately, I have never been able to attend one of Tori's concerts (for various reasons). I would really like to attend one this year, and I am trying to do so. I would also REALLY like to get Tori's autograph, if I can. I have heard mention of the "meet and greet" sessions. What, exactly, are these? Are they done at every venue/date of the tour? Are they generally before of after the concert (or both)? (And if, for whatever reason, I cannot get tickets again,) are you required to be a ticket holder of the concert in order to attend the meet and greet? Sorry for all the questions. But I have been severely disappointed in the past, and I do not want to miss out this time around. As I said, I would like to attend a concert, and I would REALLY like to get Tori's autograph as well. Any help or information anyone can give me would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks in advance. If you do have adequate mics, you're going to get a faithful recording. The only issue is what it's faithful of. From the front row, you're going to get a recording that sounds like the front row, including all of the talking, jostling, etc. While this may be great for you (as a memory), most often traders REALLY dislike shows "interrupted" with this sort of thing. > I personally recommend seats by the soundboard for good bootlegging. It costs a little more, but the overall sound response is a LOT better. I paid $230, and it included the mics, battery box, and a switchable bass roll-off filter.
