First of all the place is not that huge, but the seats are really crammed together and steep. So no matter where you sat, you still had a good seat. Her opening act was okay. They kinda put me to sleep. Well anyways the show was amazing! All of my expectations were met and exceeded. She opened up with Precious Things if im correct, and that was amazing. I was so happy to hear Rassberry Swirl, i felt like i was in a rave or something. The whole place was rockin. She also played-Winter, Cruel, Spark, IIIEEE, Merman, Space Dog(Im pretty sure),The Waitress(It totally shocked me, I didn't even recognize it at first!) Pandora's Aquarium. Im sorry i didnt write down the order. She sang a few other ones too. But there was one song I had never heard before and i still dont know what it was. It was like the fourth or sixth song? And the coolest part about the show was how nice all the fans were. Everyone was polite and helping eachother find thier seats. The only down side to the whole concert was that, about halfway through my right ear was pluging up and it hurt after the concert. The Band was awfully loud. When i plugged my ears you could hear tori's voice way better. But now its fine and Im hoping to got to the show im San Diego if i can find tickets.:) Phillipg ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 13:31:11 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: JS enhanced CD and Quicktime 3.0 (for Windows) Hi all, When I brought home my JS enhanced CD last week I popped it into my computer and it played perfectly, so I was a bit puzzled by all the problems I've seen mentioned here on the list. Puzzled that is until I replaced the older version I had been using (Quicktime for Windows 2.1.1) with the new Quicktime 3.0. When I tried to see the videos again just now I got the message that I needed to get Quicktime, which is of course silly since I had Quicktime 3.0 installed. Anyway, I reloaded my older copy of Quicktime (which actually came on an enhanced CD by a very cool band called Rose Chronicles) and now the JS videos play normally again. So my advice to all of you having problems is to hunt down an older version of Quicktime. Mike | Michael Curry / mcurry@io.com / mcurry@smoe.org | | http://www.io.com/~mcurry | | Am I bitter? Freedom du Lac Bee Pop Music Critic (Published Sept. 18, 1998) The most memorable aspect of a Tori Amos show is usually its stunning intimacy. The quirky, kooky singer-songwriter has proven in previous area appearances that she can carry a concert simply with her multi-octave voice and her beloved Bosendorfer piano. Her Community Center Theater shows in 1994 and 1996 both came off like raw, late-night phone conversations -- all personal disclosures, questions and asides, with every breath and smack of the lips vividly accounted for, every uncomfortable pause or vocal inflection intensely magnified. On Wednesday night at oversized Arco Arena, Amos opted instead to stage a full-blown rock show complete with fog, disco balls, elaborate lighting schemes and, most notably, a three-piece backing band that somehow made its way to the foreground. Amos herself was buried beneath the band's disturbingly dense sound. At times, her graceful, long-lined piano melodies were rendered inaudible -- lost amid the clutter of clacking drums, burping bass lines and wailing guitars, as during "Caught a Lite Sneeze." And her obtuse lyrics, which come off like stream-of-consciousness diary entries and are difficult and dense enough when delivered a cappella, were almost impossible to interpret throughout most of the 17-song set. It was as if a thick, impenetrable wall of sound had suddenly been erected to separate fans from the compelling emotional core of Amos' mystical, mysterious songs about self-discovery, empowerment and the search for universal truths. Fans might even have felt like folkies did when Dylan went electric at Newport, though being served this odd concert concoction probably was more akin to ordering a delicate scallop dish, only to have it served smothered under thick, unwanted barbecue sauce. The old and very much preferable Amos did appear -- albeit far too briefly -- about midway through the show, as the classically trained former piano prodigy kicked her band off the stage and declared to her fans: "This is our time." With the lights finally holding still, she performed a haunting version of her 1994 song "Baker Baker," about yet another unresolved relationship and the desire to feel whole again. She began toying with the tempo of the song, drawing out notes at will, inserting pauses for effect, playing the piano haltingly to create a terrific sense of tension. It was far more dramatic and powerful than anything Amos was able to manage with her overpowering, constantly crescendoing band. Too bad she wasn't able to see this through the fog that kept spilling across the stage during the strangely disappointing show. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 15:11:25 -0400 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: tori's hands At 09:42 AM 9/20/98 -0500, smilin' joe riley wrote: > >hey, all, just wonderin', what does tori always have written on her hands? I would like to know how you get the >things in without being caught...if one brand of tape is better etc... Actually, your seats aren't the best ones available for taping. This is going to sound strange, but they're most likely -too close- to the stage. Unless you're using -really good- mics (I'm talking in the $2000 and up range), they'll overload and the sound will come out muddy. Also, you're probably going to have to stand for the show (people in the front are encouraged to stand and dance by the powers that be), so you're going to have people jostling you, dancing, screaming, etc. You've got the best seats in the house for -seeing- Tori, but not the best ones for booting Tori. I personally recommend seats by the soundboard for good bootlegging. You're generally in the best acoustic spot in the place by the soundboard. Your mics won't overload, you won't get too much bass or too little treble, etcetcetc. As to the rest, your bootlegging setup depends mostly on your price range. At the low end is cassette. Expect to pay $50+ for a recorder. Use Maxell XL-IIS, TDK SA-X, or TDK MA tapes for recording. Keep a very close eye on your watch, or you'll cut off songs (which sucks!). 90 minute tapes actually have around 47 minutes per side, 100 minute tapes have 52 minutes per side. If your watch or pager has an alarm on it, set it to go off 40 minutes (assuming 90 minute tapes) later -- she'll most likely be in the middle of a song when it goes off, so you'll have time to let her finish the song, then flip it during the applause. When you make a copy of your cassette, you introduce additional noise into the copy you made, so each subsequent recording loses sound quality. In the middle is minidisc. A recorder will cost you $250 and up. Not too many choices on taping media for you here. You can either choose to record in mono or stereo. If you record in stereo, you get 74 minutes of music per minidisc, mono is twice that. If you do the stereo, you get better sound quality but, again, you've gotta keep your eye on your watch so you know when to swap discs. One -really- good thing about minidisc is that a lot of people don't realise you can record on minidisc, so if they search you on the way in and find it, they mightn't realise it's a recorder. The recorders are also pretty small and light, which also make them good for booting. Although it's digital, you do not make a digital copy ("clone") when you copy from minidisc to minidisc -- thus, like cassette, sound quality degenerates the further you get away from the original. Top end is DAT. A new recorder will cost you $550 and up. KAO Gold DATs are considered very good, although I don't think there's any sort of agreement on that in the DAT arena. ;) You can get 2-3 hours on DAT (depending on which length you buy), and you never have to flip the tape (so no more worries about cutting songs). When you copy from one DAT to another, you're making an exact digital copy -- thus, the sound quality on the copy and the original is exactly the same. No degradation of quality! Woohoo! :) IMHO, when you're booting the show itself, the mics are the most important thing. You need a mic that's going to be able to handle the extra sound that the band is putting out -- a cheap mic (or, even worse, the mic that's built into your recorder) probably isn't going to cut it. For a low-end ($100 or so) mic, Core Sounds Binaurals are highly recommended. >Also has anyone had a press-pass for this tour. My friend has one and from >the info they gave him he will be able to take pictures during the show and >I thought it was only at the sound-check before the show. They just said no >flash photog. during the first three songs...so has anyone noticed any >picture taking going on during the show or is this something they are doing >just at Little Rock. The press is generally allowed to take pictures during the show. Thankfully, the press is usually bright enough to not to use flash photography (unlike many members of the audience). :) HTH. :) /nad ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 21:50:33 EDT From: PRTCLMAGIC@aol.com Subject: Time Sensitive- Tues @ the Greek Dear Beautiful EWF I would be undoubtedly grateful if any fellow EWF could point me in the right direction for the meet~n~greet on tuesday at the Greek in los angeles. There is the Mad @ Chris "This" mixes, which use "so I must...get out of this..." over and over. There is the Salt Tank/Eugenia (which is the mixer, and which is the "song"?) mix that uses "Carolina" (i think, unless there's a third) But none of these are "Atlantic Records" remixes. They're not even really "me and a gun" mixes - although for a while I was putting the Mad @ Chris mix on mix tapes and calling it that, and I saw it show up named "me and a gun mix" after a while. They're just samples. And IMHO they're separate songs, and have nothing to do with and don't take away from me and a gun. :) marlantigone (I bought the Mad @ Chris vinyl in London even though - duh - - my record player is broken - but someone else taped one of the mixes for me long ago...that's how I know about that one) - --------------------------------------------------------------------- Today's grammar lesson... ~~*~*~*~*~You're=You Are~*~*~Your=the possessive~*~*~ ~~*~*~*~*~You're cute, and so is your cat.~*~*~*~ http://members.tripod.com/~marlantigone (random home page) http://members.tripod.com/~marlantigone/toriboot.htm (trade list) http://members.tripod.com/~marlantigone/ockle.htm (Ockle zine page) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Sep 1998 18:46:34 -0700 From: "Chloe" Subject: Re: San Jose setlist.. [9.19] Hmm...Tori did American Pie -->SLTS, and PGY last time she was in San Jose. It made me think about how she's said that she draws on the energy of an area to form the setlist. Has anyone else noticed that she's played songs in your city that she played on previous tours that she hasn't really played very much on the current tour? (Did that make sense? =D) Various comments on SJ show...I was thrilled to hear the premiere of Hotel! It was wonderful! And when she came dancing out for the encore she was wearing this adorable leopard suit that had a tail, hood with ears on it, and little paw mittens! It was soo cute! - -----Original Message----- From: Shaquiqua L'Tallalanda To: torinews@smoe.org Date: Sunday, September 20, 1998 12:48 AM Subject: San Jose setlist.. Is nothing sacred, or am I mis-interpreting the use of "remix" in this, since I really thought last time I checked that the song has always been a capella. - -Rob ~~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Robert Reynolds rreynol3@utk.edu UT Hodges Library Serials Dept.
