(A) There have been several stories and much speculation about the name change. They go as follows: * Named herself after the Torrey pine -- a small, crooked, and rare tree which grows in Southern California. * Derived her name from the word 'noTORIous,' for always wearing red leather pants when teaching Sunday School for her father's church. * One of her friend's boyfriends, after hearing her play in a club, said to her "You don't look like an 'Ellen,' you look more like a Tori." The most likely story seems to be that the comment from her friend's boyfriend did actually happen. Tori then supposedly found out about the Torrey Pine, and decided to keep the name. woj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 12:10:25 -0400 From: pauly on the shore Subject: Re: Tori on the MTV VMAs also sprach amanda m: >i may be reiterating, but hey...i just thought it was delicious how annoyed >she seemed. To "some" extent perhaps but very damn little extent. Tori made her career by promoting herself. The LE tour was a perfect marketing textbook example of self-promotion. If my facts are correct, Tori and her personal staff set up the entire LE tour with little, if any, help from Atlantic. They had tons of personal appearances in record stores and in person interviews on local radio stations. Her after-the-show meet-'n'greets sometimes lasted five hours; just Tori chatting with her new fans about her music and their lives. She touched a lot of people on a very deep, personal level in a very short time and, in the process, sold over 100,000 copies of LE during that summer. My personal opinion is that eMpTV deserves almost NO credit for Tori's success. They're not going to jump on the Tori-wagon until she being played on every bubble gum radio station in the US, goddess forbid. If that ever happens eMpTV will see dollar signs in place of the notes on Tori's sheet music and then they'll play the hell out of her, dig out all the "old" albums, and produce specials titled, "Just A Girl and Her Piano." Until then disconnect your cable service and shoot your tv; it's such a terrible waste of time. Just MHO valued at .02 cents or less. This video is the complete [1] version of the special Tori did for Lifetime Television on 23 January 1997. It is -not- available in the States; however, it -is- available in Canada. It's not terribly hard to find. My local Tower Records had a couple of copies in stock for $19.99 the last I was in there. If you can't find a store who has it or is willing to order it for you, I'd suggest checking out one of the online music stores to see if they stock it and for how much. I've personally ordered from both CDNow {www.cdnow.com} and Music Boulevard {www.musicblvd.com} and been pleased with them. ISTR both of them having it in stock last I looked, but don't quote me on that. :) HTH. :) /nad [1] Well, it's not actually complete. It's got all the songs that she performed, but comparing that video [a] to my audience boot of the show, it's missing some Tori chitchat.
