C'mon people, help me out!! I thought the show was awesome! A full 5 minutes on Tori. Couldn't get better than that. The posters behind Dr. & Mrs. Amos were the original cover shot for Y Kan't Tori Read and the promotional Under the Pink that Atlantic sent to the record stores. I believe (and Richard can correct me if he knows different) that Tori's folks contributed the high school footage (or it came from her school, or one of her classmates, or...). As far as "Trial by Jury", I used to watch it in the early 80's, tho' I didn't remember the episode they showed. I never knew how deep into acting Tori got, and I certainly didn't expect to find out she did a guest spot on a drama series. I thought the cornflake commercial and a few extra bits were the extent of her acting experiences. And I absolutely loved "Happy, Shiny Ellen" singing Baltimore. What a giggle I got from that! And you know, Tori was so beautiful even then, like she never did have a bad awkward stage during adolecense (or maybe she just had the smarts to stay away from cameras till it was over ;)). Thanks VH1 for hearing us and giving Tori a spotlight. This and Storytellers too! *Sigh* It's about time. btw, how does one go about getting into the audience for Storytellers? Anyone have an idea? Here is the Goldmine article. It was accompanied by a big pic of her. Its her lying on a mirror. FYI, my fiance knows the Associate editor (we all volunteer at the local college radio station) and he said that the issue with tori on the cover was one of (if not the) best seller for them. Anyone read that one? The typos are mine (grumble grumble) but the misquote if lyrics is the authors. For a woman that has no trouble expressing her views in a frank straightforward manner during interviews (the God of Christianity beong a frequent target of her scorn) Tori Amos can be downright inscutable when it comes to putting her stormy emotions into song. Most if not all of the song on Choir girl her fourth effort makes little if any real sense at all. Indeed amos seems utterly incapable of uttering a direct sentance. Though Amos has stated that some of these songs came out the sense of anger, pain and loss that she has felt in the wake of her recent miscarriage her modus operandi is set to specific mood be it anger or sadness without clealy articulating what is underlying that particular emotion. In her favor, the music itself (anchored by Amos expressive piano playing) is often entrancing. She thrives on versitlity. amos voice is is an everchanging multifaceted instument which can soar to a thrilling soprano one minute, or convey a tart edginess the next. Her music constantly suprises--you never know what to expect from track to trackand theres not an ordinary moment within hearing distance. Two of the less cryptic songs apper to address the loss of her child. On the mesmerising opener, "Spark", Amos questions the very existance of the creator ("if the divine masterplan is perfection, maybe I ll give Judas a try here) while the dense exotic iieee (the records best song) find Amos railing against the basic unfairness of her fate (we scream in cathedrals why cant iyt be beautiful why does there gotta be a sacrifice) She cant stiop asking the big question why. Amos songs are rife with high drama On northern lad she laments lost love with a heart rending catch in her voice. Playboy mommy is is a sympathetic look at a trashy womanwhos fiercely committted to donig the best that she can for her child while Rasberry swirl pulses with urgency (though amos hyperventilating vocal sounds erotic the song appears to be a paean to the power of female friendship). Amos slips up only once on Hotel, a noisy mess of a tune that reeks of self indulgence, something that, for all the records high wire emotional intensity, she manages to avoid everywhere else - --Tierney Smith Daisy Melanie & Lenny Green lgreen@coredcs.com "Faeries wear boots & you gotta believe me I saw what I saw and I tell you no lies" "Remember me? I think she's refering to the rush to the hospital (the siren, even though she drove herself, you know, it's a metaphor) and she's also spewing against all those women out there who have children without even wanting them, when she desperately wanted hers. "Almost bravee almost pregnant almost in love VANILLA" This can go two ways. I think she's singing to the aforementioned type of women.. almost feeling things, but not quite... stumbling through life without ever being away of her gifts. But then again Tori was all of those things at the time of the miscarriage. The Vanilla line could be a comfort to herself, sort of like molassas, but I think in reference to the first interpretation, it's more like a retort. Vanilla is sort of the common ingredient to most cakes and such, I think of this as being akin to cornflakes.. the common, everyday, normal girl who doesn't really give a damn about anything. This was very similar to my interpretation. I think it has to do with the expectation that women be perfect and thin and beautiful and there is a fair amount of backstabbing going on and competition. Tori is singing (i'm fairly certain, especially considering the placement of the interview on the LE video) about how she wa when she was in junior high. She was in love with a boy who wouldn't give her the time of day, but she was so shy she wouldn't have a backbone and stand up to him when he was mean to her. This is one of the most heartwrenching Tori moments I've seen,w hen she describes how she felt when he threatend to beat her up if she played a song she wrote for him...sigh.. If you consider the lines before it "...in my peach party dress...no one dared... no one cared to tell me... where the pretty girls are, those demigods... with their nine inch nails.." etc. She was wearing her pretty peach dress trying to impress this boy, all the time unaware that she was losing the competition out of naivete. I actually have a crush on someone right (silly but it hurts sometimes!) and I will listen to this song to purge those feelings... he's used to the whole perfect suburban type of woman... and I feel so inadequate :( I really do think that's what she's singing about here. For one thing, she's open and honest, some thing I think most queer folks appreciate. She bares it all. She puts her pain out there in a sincere fashion and some of the pain she expresses is that of the outcast, the different one, and the betrayed. She's also different than practically everyone else. From my experience, differentness is generally more valued by the queer community than the straight community (this is a big generalization---don't flame me!). I was wondering if anyone had any lyrics or info on the song "Distant Storm". I have a VERY bad Mp3 of Tori singing it and I need to know where it's from. Thanks a bunch! Love always, Melissa And you know and I know I don't know me very well. ~~http://members.tripod.com/~ToriAmosBsides~ ~~The Tori Amos B-side Interpetation Search ~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 18:22:02 -0400 From: Tripp Gwyn Subject: RS Update from EQS I called EQS today to ask them when they would have the RS CD's in stock so they could send them to the people who've pre-ordered. They told me FRI. There's still no real word on the Swedish JS single, except that it's coming in September. NO word on B-sides ..etc. They'll probably just be the same as the US (Never Seen Blue, Beulah Land) but there could be differences, you never know. I think she's refering to the rush to the hospital (the siren, even though she drove herself, you know, it's a metaphor) and she's also spewing against all those women out there who have children without even wanting them, when she desperately wanted hers. >> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 17:16:57 -0700 From: "Ms. Timid" Subject: VH1 Storytellers (Tori episode?) Also, she graduated from high school in 1981 from Richard Montgomery High School in 1981 and was voted most likely to succeed. Hope this settles it. =) Best regards. Your friend might have been confused by the clip they showed of a high school production of "Gypsy" that Tori was in in 1979. I don't recall that the show mentioned when Tori graduated.
