In Connecticut on August 4, Elyse was number 22 and took her place three rows back at the barricades. In D.C. on the 8th, I don't know what number she was but she was like four rows back. In Knoxville, she was number 10, and I expect she took her place up front as anyone who would have been there that day early enough to have been number 10 deserved to. Elyse is a kind person with a big mouth. She has a strong personality, and I know that rubs some people the wrong way. I see no reason why that earns her a place in some pantheon of Those Who We Are To Collectively Despise. I have some serious problems with a lot of people who go to shows, some of whom might even be on this list, and you won't find *me* complaining publicly about them on a personal basis. If we can't tolerate one another we're in bad shape. Why anyone else feels comfortable with trying to make someone a pariah by dissing them publicly here, as opposed to simply complaining about any objectionable *behavior* they've seen them exhibit I have no idea. I find the typical level of pride I feel in being a Toriphile hugely diminished by this sort of discussion. I've seen elsewhere that people were complaining that Elyse tries to impose her rules on the whole meeting-at-that-barricades thing, when in fact, Tori's security guy Steve Sanchez frequently *asks* her to explain the rules as *he* devised them to the crowd; and as soft as his voice is I think probably four times as many people hear the rules when Elyse yells them out than would, were Steve to speak them in his normal speaking voice, which is all he's ever gonna do. He's not going to raise his voice. (I've heard him say so, lest anyone think I'm making this up.) Steve also was ill for a while recently, and certainly didn't feel like doing it at all, anyway. Thank goodness Elyse was there and was willing to tell the folks "You can get one autograph *or* one photo taken with Tori...Don't pass things up from the back for Tori to sign...Tori has the one magic pen, don't be handing pens up to her, especially ballpoints which are sharp...Don't move away from the barricade once you've spoken to Tori, stay right where you are," etc. I'm paraphrasing, as I don't remember the rules word for word. Elyse does, and thank goodness Steve is smart enough to take advantage of her willingness to help. It is totally backwards if people think she is trying to make folks adhere to her rules when she is merely helping Steve try to preserve order! How goofy! On a related note, before the numbering system was being tried I could well see that this whole thing with ANYONE meeting Tori in the afternoon before a show was on its way to extinction, due to typically high levels of chaos. None of Tori's people are inclined to run a system for all this. It's up to those of us on this side of the barricades to get our collective act together. Were fistfights to start breaking out regularly I can assure everyone that this whole thing would soon be a foggy memory from a distant past--and I think that would suck. Engaging in a cybernautical hate-fest isn't going to make things better for anybody. I think getting people agitated before they even get to the venue to wait several hours in close quarters and in all kinds of weather is a *really* bad idea. Finally, we have no "right" to meet Tori. Tori has decided to go to a lot of trouble and expense (barricades and security people are not free) so that she can meet with folks before almost every show. She came out before the Madison Square Garden show and signed a bunch of stuff for people when, instead, she should have been in the hospital. I think being grateful for what she freely gives us is much more called for than bitching and moaning (and whining) among ourselves. That she bothers with this at all is one reason I love and respect her so much. I wish we exhibited more of an appreciation of it. This may slow down how quickly the song starts however, will help with the skipping a lot. 8> Save changes and enjoy. Well, again, just got back from the second Sunrise Musical Theater show and it was, in my opinion, and that of most of the people I spoke to, one of the best Tori concerts ever! Here's the setlist: Precious Things Spark God Cruel Little Earthquakes Siren Mr. Zebra (acoustic) Flying Dutchman (acoustic) Mother (acoustic) Northern Lad Caught a Lite Sneeze Liquid Diamonds The Waitress ***** Talula Raspberry Swirl ***** Smells Like Teen Spirit Pretty Good Year Whereas in the last show we had some minor problems with the sound, tonight's show was flawless! Tori opened with her amazing Precious Things, sending everyone to their feet, where they would stay for the rest of the show. Next came Spark and then God! I was so suprised that she played God! Little did I know what was in store for all of us. Cruel was next, and I'm glad cause I wanted to hear it live, and then Little Earthquakes. My goddess! It is such an amazing song performed live with the band! After, Tori did a little intro, with what sounded to be some sort of hymn, and then launched into Siren (yet another treat for me!). The band left at this point, and Tori said something like, "Isn't it funny how some songs just decide to come out?" and then sang Mr. Zebra. The surprise of the night, though, was when she started playing the familiar chords to the intro of Flying Dutchman and everyone went up in shouts and claps! Yet another very welcomed suprise; Tori was full of them tonight. Mother was next, and it was beautiful to listen to this song live and with the passion and love she put into it. The band came back and they did Northern Lad and Caught a Lite Sneeze. A very throaty rendition of Liquid Diamonds followed, which only made it all that much sexier. And then came the staple of this Plugged 98 tour, The Waitress. First encore was great, cause no one could figure out what she was gonna play until the last moment, when you could see the realization of the song seconds before she dove into Talula, a better version with the bad than any other I've heard before. Then the crew came from backstage with a little cake and we all sang Happy Birthday to Tori! She actually blushed! For that she rewarded us with Raspberry Swirl, and let me say this song is amazing live! It's charged to the max, very powerful, it'll get your blood pumping 100 miles a second! The second encore was even more of a surprise! She came out alone, first of all, which had everyone wondering, and went to the piano. She played Smells Like Teen Spirit beautifully. Then the band came out and they played probably the most unexpected song, Pretty Good Year; it fits when you consider it is her birthday. All in all, it was the one of the greatests shows I've seen in my life, and definitely one of the best Tori shows ever, which was made all the more special because it was her birthday and she chose to spend it with us. It's a religion without penetration. And subsequently the same believers take their swords and chop the non-believers to pieces, stab babies to death and burn witches at the stake. If anyone recorded this show, I am willing to pay for a copy of it. I went with a friend of mine (it was his birthday as well) and it was an extremely special night and I was wondering if it would be possible if anyone recorded it. I'm willing to pay or trade. Anyway, pretty good year made me cry. But I am making myself a keychain of Tori Amos, one side a picture, and the other a quote of hers. I was wondering if any of you wanted me to make you a keychain, by sending me the quote you have, and describing the pic. I am getting the pictures copied from Kinkos, so It' can't have a copyright. Also, the keychain is a diameter of almost 3 inches, so get back to me if you want one, I would have to charge probably $5.00, I am not exactly sure. Also, I am looking for a good quote for the back of mine, if any of you want to contribute your ideas, please feel free too. Thanks in advance~ jen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 22:48:43 EDT From: Toriamos1@aol.com Subject: Re: BFP videos In a message dated 98-08-21 17:19:47 EDT, you write: I am still looking for any and ALL of Tori's videos in ntsc format... if anyone can help me, please let me know ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 19:51:31 PDT From: "Julia K." If so, I'd be very willing to trade for or buy a copy. Also, if anyone got any pictures from after the show I'd be very grateful if you could contact me, I took some very good ones and would love to trade...
