Circus Magazine Well, I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but the promised Tori interview in Circus magazine appears in this month's issue (date says: display til September 22) with Billy Corigan on the cover. There is a small Tori blurb on the cover. Inside there is a 2 page interview with a black and white pic (the one from EW's It List) as well as a full page color pic of her at the mic. I'd have more details, but I left it in my friend's car. I did skim over some of it and noticed that they mistakenly mentioned God as one of the tracks from Chiorgirl. smiles! shawn.the.little.masochist... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 10:32:25 +0200 From: Luciano Ferreira Subject: RE: Tori not trendy enough? Hiya Melissa I think it was very sweet of you to say those things about Tori, yeah, you're right Fame has been one of Tori's greatest dreams, and if we really love Tori then we'd want Tori to be famous too, right? If Tori had to get a lot of airplay on the radios, and I think this is possible because Cruel and Raspberry Swirl kick ass, why should we get mad and frustrated if they play Tori every 3 hours or something to that effect... why, we'd just switch off the radios, but I know that I'd eagerly anticipate to hear any song from Tori on the radio. I first heard Tori on the radio, late one night, the radio was playing Caught A Lite Sneeze, this was back in the Leap Year ,1996 and that song was (excuse the really tackey-cliched imagery here:) a message sent from the divine... and from that song I asked around, and a friend had LE and UtP, she taped me some of these songs, and now History is made... ok, I'll stop with the dump session, but yanno I'm tellin' you EWF this because Tori needs airplay and more coverage so, well she can save more souls... so yeah... nothing's gonna stop me from floating LUCIano FERreira > ---------- > From: SalrMoonS@aol.com[SMTP:SalrMoonS@aol.com] > Reply To: SalrMoonS@aol.com > Sent: Sunday, August 16, 1998 10:25 PM > To: precious-things@smoe.org > Subject: Re: Tori not trendy enough? > > > In a message dated 8/16/98 4:58:04 PM !!!First Boot!!!, > veegman@qed.net > writes: > > << I'd much rather see Tori get minimal airplay and remain less > popular than > the Spice Girls. But I found it to be stirringly beautiful and with so many layers to understand and dig through. But here are some of my impressions of the video: I got the impression that the "bride" was viewing the different stages of a womans life (I'm gonna assume her own-past, present and future); the child, the mother, the teen with the boy in her bed. There was a sense of surrender, in the old woman deciding not to take her pills, to Tori giving her young self the veil. Surrender is not always bad when it is the realization that events will occur outside of our control, that control is a self-delusion. And in my opinion, Jackie O did show grace in the face of surrender. The stoic expression she wore during JFK's funeral--even showing grace in her bloodstained suit while Johnson was sworn into office on Air Force One, that was strength in the midst of surrender. I think the video captured Tori's longing for strength in all the situations where surrender is immanent (surrendering herself to become a "wife", surrendering to the boy in her room, surrendering her *dream* of a white wedding to cling to *she who used to be*). (btw-surrender and sacrifice feature promenantly in the next two songs on the album; coincidence? I think not) >as it was having your own dreams shot down in your face, and realizing what >you are entirely capable of. I requoted this because it is so entirely right. When you choose to surrender, you might seem to be giving up your dreams. But if you remain true to your vision, your most soul-defining reason to live, then a new path will appear that will allow you to have your dreams within your surrendered status. When I surrender to the fates (and fairies), I know beyond a doubt that a door will open for me, a door with even better opportunities to help me realize my dreams. And truly, it is not until my dreams are shot down do I realize the importance of my fulfillment of my dreams. I realize exactly what I am capable of, and how much I had been holding back. Which brings me to a final point--I think I caught some YKTR symbolism and nods to the first 3 solo albums. Tori resented the powers that be that convinced her to pull away from her dreams and head into "Benitar" wannabe rock chick. So in her reletive youth she discovered that she could grow through sacrifice and surrender; the more pain she had, the more intense the music became. This is a continuing pattern. Almost as if she sets herself up (or makes herself available) to be influenced by major life changing experiences. From the failure of her first album (and what she saw as personal rejection for a long while) which set the stage for LE. And the last *inspirational setup* was the miscarrige that brought the muse back to her. In the video of Jackie's Strength, I saw a fight against a destiny that may not be wanted (read- yktr), hiding away from something that is supposed to bring joy (the early sucess of LE). I saw the inklings of the women vs women war between the mom and child, and again with mom & teen (UtP). There was the desire to not take anymore fire from her groom, yet she must circle past him several times to witness the pain on his face (and in turn create a personal guilt trip for causing pain) (BfP). Then lastly we see the conflicting relationship with ones self, surrendering to the pain of loss. The loss of a valuable piece of ones self. And choirgirl was born from that loss, from the early stages of acceptance of the loss, to the surrender of the dream that was the baby. For all those who don't understand a word of this (late night, little sleep), then in the words of Tori "I guess I'm an underwater thing so I guess that I can't take it personally" I'm asking you to be kind in case my insomnia has made me delusional. ;) I hope to see the JS video a few more times to get all that was being shown. And perhaps we can see more reflections from folks who are lucky enough to have it on tape who can rewatch it and dig a little deeper. "honey bring it close to my lips" op. I wonder what that could mean? har. (ok a hint: every guy want's one...?!) "honey don't blow those brains yet" now this line to me is the only line that makes me think that it might be directed to dear ol' Kurt... but yanno, for my argument's sake.... I'm gonna say this line means "hey hon' don't stress your brains out everything is gonna be alright" "starfucker just like my Daddy > just like my Daddy selling his baby > just like my Daddy > gonna strike a deal make him feel > like a Congressman > it runs in the family" > now this line refers to dear old, kind, wonderful God sacrificing his only begotten son...da-dah... Jesus Christ, our favorite Nazareen, to humanity, so us peeps could be saved... so that whole verse refers to the crucifixion... and the starfucker to me is a reference to someone who fucks those Big Peeps, the Star Peeps in the Sky, ok I won't be so obscure; starfucker is a reference to the Divine again... "rest your shoulders Peaches and Cream > everywhere a Judas as far as you can see > beautiful angel > calling "we got every re-run of Muhammad Ali"" > ok. this part is tough... butttt... we all have the gist of this verse, it's filled with betrayal of a friendship and what I also get out of this is that there is the guy ok, and well he is... oh what the fuck I dunno... shit... I get vanity in their too... ok?! "prism perfect > honey bring it close to your lips > yes > what is termed a landslide of principle > proportion boy it better be big boy" > huuuh. I get more oral sex (geez you people must think I'm blow-job crazy, well, I'm not like some Presidents , but me...?!... ok, enough about me...) and I also get the whole "making mountains out of molehills" in this line... it's like your problem may be very scary and huge to one person but to another person, it might be a stroll in the park... so see there is a non-oral sex deduction there - so nah! ok... let's go... "Mother Mary > china white > brown maybe be sweeter > she will supply > she will supply > she will supply > she will supply > gimme peace, love > peace, love > peace, love, and a hard cock!" > now this part more-or-less ties everything up together... this verse is a reference to dear old Virgin Mary and Mary Magdelin... it's this paradox kinda thing going on (op. I'm using big words again)... the whole "well why can't Jesus soil his dinky with a woman kinda Tori line"... it's like "woman why do we have to believe that losing our virginity will not make us sacred kinda thing"... so yeah... the "peace, love" part is Mother Virgin Mary and the "hard cock" is Magdelin the whore who became Jesus' girlfriend. so now I'm gonna use big words again... this song is part of the whole let's smash the patriarchy and what they think of woman kinda song... it's about woman claiming their own fire, not neccessarily sex, more sensuality, cause like Tori also says that's very different... anyways... That's hilarious! :-) > ...which is i assume from the baltimore sessions.. Let's clarify something first, here. Apparently, the Tori Stories bootleg 4-CD set lumps in the demo Tori recorded in 1978 titled "It's a Happy Day" with some so-called "Baltimore sessions." Happy Day had nothing whatsoever to do with Baltimore. It was recorded in September, 1978. (I know this because I spoke more than four years ago with the woman who hired the then Ellen Amos to record that demo for her. It may be time for me to post more background about this again but I'm not going to do it here and now.) Second, "Rubies and Gold" was supposedly written in 1982. I said it's hilarious that this came out because Tori's dad mentioned this song to me once as being one of his favorites of hers that was an early unreleased song--and guess who controls her publishing? :-D I can imagine this conversation--Dr. Amos: "I really think we should include Rubies and Gold in this anthology songbook we're putting together." Tori: "DAAA-aaad." :-) > if it's enough to include in an anthology of music by tori, why isn't it > available on *any* bootlegs? Because no bootlegger has managed to steal even a demo recording of it yet. Maybe folks can suggest to her that she release it one day. (Please let me know what her response is.) I'm shocked that she's not so embarrassed by all that early stuff that she'd have even put out sheet music for this. This is a hopeful sign for the future, although I have to think this is going to turn out to be an anomaly. I wouldn't be looking for any other unpolished gems to see light of day anytime soon. (Sorry-- unavoidable pun.) Aleks asked: > is there any single or something with "take to the sky" and/or > "landslide" ? Philadelphia radio station Y100 released a CD late last year titled "Y100 Sonic Sessions Vol. 1," which was mainly comprised of songs which musicians had performed at their radio station. Landslide as performed by Tori was one of the songs on this album, and it's a lovely version. It's also not going to be simple to find. Y100 was selling them directly, but they ran out. Your main hopes to find this would be local Philly record stores which might still have copies hanging around, or, at this point, the most likely place you'll find this would be dealers and traders of used records. I'm not a >clubber, so I don't know if it was being played there, but I hadn't heard it >on the radio in the weeks before the release. yeah and east/west can't claim any credit for that one :-) i'm an Old(ish) Ear but i've not bee on line for long, so maybe this is all done and dusted, but incase anyone should give a figg, here's the Pro Widow story as I saw it... (i'd love it if anyone could correct the mistakes there are bout to be here, record promotion is a bizarre business and it fascinates me...) after the US release of ProWdw (late summer/autumn?) in the UK it started getting played in gay clubs a lot (at least - well, i can only speak from experience) and i've been told the trendier general clubs were playing it too, then BBC Radio One's dance programmes started playing it a lot when the Hey Jupiter double A side came out (hence Hey J hanging around in the top 40 for longer than other preceding tori singles) So at this point - late autumn - there's a major potential hit on e/w's hands - - all they need to do is start plugging Pro Widow (up till then the completely excellent but less commercial Hey Jupiter was the one being played on in store promos that I heard). And what happens? Nuffink So from somewhere a remix of "People Hold On" by Lisa Stansfield appears with the exact same drum & bass track as Pro Widow, credited to "The Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", and starts getting the air play, the club play, and the sales. Then in the first week of January Pro Widow is finally re-released, and gets to number one, which is clever of the East West people, since the first week of January is traditionally the week when record sales are at the lowest, combining the 2 bases likely to by the rerelease - EFWs and clubbers - gave it a really good shot at No 1 - and even now 2 yrs later its unusualy for a UK gay modern-dance music type club to last the whole night without a dose of tori Anyways, so then things really took off - the follow up stunner of a single with the remix of Horses, in the style of the then really popular Robert Miles type dreamy-house music, the double album "live and remixed" holding a healthy place in the top 40 for several weeks, also featuring the Voodoo mix...... oh no sorry that was only in the world where i own tori's contract.... 8-) Instead the bizarre reissue of BfP with Talula (tornado) and Pro Widow remix, with no Voodoo at all (wouldnt it have been *cheaper* for e/w to just repackage the original BfP disc with a 'bonus' disc of remixes and rarities?) Ho hum Still, they re-released Little Earthquakes for UKP 6.99 and she hovered in the chart around the bottom of the top 75 for a while if i remember right... Blimey that went on a bit - sorry! - but, well,,,, you did ask Actually i wonder if Tori's personal crisis at the time Pro Wo was charting was the reason nothing was ever done with the Horses remix? just having thoughts all over the keyboard pete # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # 'you make me nervous when i see you i can't imagine what it's like to be you' ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 16:38:40 EDT From: Delirum5@aol.com Subject: Re: Anthology info i saw the anthology and it was nice but not worth the 30$ they ask for it.there are no quotes or insights. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 13:47:22 PDT From: "Kevin Myra" Subject: tori deserves better ok, I know this isn't a new idea, but I really think that all of us toriphiles should have one day (soon) where we just write as many messages to one place (say...mtv) to try to get tori a little more attention. in the long run, probalbly noting will come of it, but if like 1400 of us each wrote substansial messages to mtv about how much we would like to see more of tori on their channel, etc etc, they'ed at least know how many of us REALLY care. also, allllll of us should drop a quick note to that, ohhh i forget the name- oh! total request. we should all agree on a video, and request it. possibly daily. there are enough of us to be able to at least make tori #10 once in a while. I think a good video would be Jackie's strength, but whatever... I personally feel that tori should have the chance to go mainstream. most people have already heard her a bit, and they haven't picked up on her yet, so it's not like a hoard of 20,000 new toriphiles are going to buy out our concerts...besides, tori deserves to have her voice heard. so if anyone agrees with me and/or has mtv's addresses on hand, please email me. thanks for reading my little goal kevin Lightning_sEed0@hotmail.com .0.0.0. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of precious-things-digest V3 #292 *************************************
