It makes me think of submissiveness and the effect of the church on females. Fascism is a governmental system marked by centralized dictatorship, stringent socioeconomic control, and often belligerent nationalism (from Webster's). Belligerent means inclined to be aggressive or hostile. I have always taken the "fascist little panties" phrase to refer to the way females are submissive to often dominant men and this is something that Tori partially blames on the church from my understanding of things I have read before. To me, this line refers to the way submissives take more pleasure in misery than happiness and that their sexuality (little panties) is geared to respond positively to aggressiveness. I personally blame much of this on the church and believe that I have read that Tori does, too. So that would explain the nine-inch nails which refer to Jesus. "tucked inside the heart of every NICE girl." I'm not too sure where to go here, but I think this has to do with how confusing this feeling of submissiveness is and what seems to be a contradiction between being a slut (submissive) and a "nice" girl on the surface. However, nice girls can be submissive and a slut in that sense is not a "bad" girl. I don't mean to offend anyone with this explanation. It is hard to understand some of what I just wrote unless you are familiar with submissiveness -- something I think Tori mentions quite often in her songs. This is MY take on it and if you disagree, I don't mind you stating your opinion, but please don't start any wars. Just open honest opinions. Good poetry and good songs are meant to be interpreted to fit your own life and beliefs. Tori has said many times that her songs will mean different things to different people and she is very right about that. And that's one thing that I love about her music. Fascism is basically total control as I understand it. In the line(s) before, she is talking about how she wants to spit on "those christian boys" I think that this line is definitely talking about the hypocrism (spelling?) of the Christian religion. I mean, "Their nine-inch nails and little fascist panties tucked inside the heart of every nice girl" So, "their" is of course (to me) Christian boys/men. It shows how (I think) they use their religious beliefs to make them powerful, but with bad intentions. It shows, in my opinion, how they fool people with their false righteousness. The lyrics in between have always made sense to me (you're really an ugly girl, but i like the way you play, etc) as being a bunch of angry, painful memories of childhood and being picked on by all the other kids. but it just never occurred to me what "precious things" really meant until I heard it with the band. "These precious things, let them bleed, let them wash away, ... let the break their hold over me" is referring to those same people - the "pretty girls", whom all the adults pick up and say "aww, isn't she precious", etc. The precious things are people, not things. And they're not really precious! *light dawns over abbe* The lyric is wishing she could hurt them, make them suffer like she's suffered, and make them go away and finally release her from the pressures of having to be pretty and be like everyone else. As for the "nine inch nails and little fascist panties tucked into the heart of every nice girl", that someone asked about recently, I think it's a reference to the dark side and the evil secrets that these people who may seem pretty on the surface have inside them... - --Abbe ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 03:02:22 EDT From: BeYerMama@aol.com Subject: charlotte/boot trades Hi, I was at the Charlotte show and it was really amazing. This was my first Tori-experience so that made it twice as exciting for me. I got to meet Tripp and Torifreak from this list also, which was very cool. Didn't get to tape the show due to the bag checks at the door though, so if anyone taped the show I would really love to get ahold of a copy. I can trade you the 3 sound check songs and any other live stuff I have. Unfortunately, I don't have any Tori, but I have shows of Sleater-Kinney, the Make-Up, Huggy Bear, Sonic Youth, Geraldine Fibbers, Bikini Kill, Kaia, Kaia + Melissa of Team Dresch' new band, Hole, and Babes in Toyland. I also have the Heavens to Betsy demo and the out of print Heartless Martin tape (both w/ Corin of S-K) and anyone who is into the Geraldine Fibbers I have 3 unreleased tracks Carla did with a lounge singer named Hadda Brooks (Virgin paid for the tracks but never did anything with them). If anyone is interested in trading any Tori shows at all please email me also... For the Charlotte show I'd be willing to send blank tapes plus a copy of the soundcheck from that show. I spoke to Warner today (because they handle Tori's UK distribution) and managed to extract a few choice pieces of information. Don't expect any good news, because there isn't any, in fact, if you're feeling suicidal, I'd avoid reading the rest of this mail altogether. Raspberry Swirl has been "indefinitely shelved", to quote the person I spoke to, meaning that at the present time they have no plans to release it. So this did, of course, beg the $1,000,000 question - "Erm, Hello... Why?" - and the answer is one that I don't think anyone wants to hear. It has been shelved because they didn't think it would be a commercial success, and have therefore decided that due to the 'failure' of Choirgirl, it was "unlikely" that there would be any more UK singles from the album. Which once again led to a question "How do you expect anything to sell when you fail to promote it." Sadly, there was no answer to that one. So in short, the UK has been declared a "dead" market for Tori items, and they consider it to be finanicially "too risky" to release anything new. You are free to take any available seat as long as its not within the first two rows. Yes, this means if you have second-row tickets then you are now in general admission with everybody else. Yes, that sucks for those who had great seats. Conversely, if you were in the last row then you now have a chance of getting good seats. People who know about the venue change will probably arrive early to line-up so be forewarned. Please see the web page at: http://www.knoxvilletickets.com/tori.html for more info. SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE The new issue of Seventeen magazine (with Brandy on the cover) has a two-page article on Tori. -Greg Burrell The Official Tori Amos Fanzine News Editor http://www.toriamos.org Really Deep Thoughts ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Aug 1998 10:18:53 +1000 From: etienne Subject: spark shirt trade i have an *immaculate* spark t-shirt that was released as a promo with the release of ftcgh. it is a white 'large' (a generous large) short sleeve shirt , and the design is the cover from the spark single. it has never been worn and is in perfect condition. i am looking ot trade this with anyone who has been/is going to a show for either a 'raspberry swirl girl' shirt or the one with the Ivanow image of the blue-tori from the album sleeve. either way, i am after *small* and *black* (as opposed to large and white). interested par-tays perlease honk my hooters via my email ;) Alexandra - -- smoke crack for jesus ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 12:51:17 -0700 From: Matthew Skillings Subject: Re: An interesting site w/ good points I've had these thoughts myself. It's been a bit of a worry to me as well. Especially when she said in the recent Rolling Stone article that she wanted to kill anybody who doesn't believe in faeries. I mean that just comes across as completely nuts, especially too those who might take it out of context. That got me wondering where does Tori really stand on Faerie. I mean too most they would take it very literally. Faeries according too the popular folk image are little tinkerbell sort of things, which in itself isn't a bad image. However this image taken on it's own comes across as very shallow and well childish, that is too say you believe in such a being. In more recent interviews (that Australian radio interview especially) she has seemed to express some concern about this perception that others have of her. About how she'll say she'll say she believe in Faeries, and others will miss the point entirely and think she is some airhead. These interviews came out just around the time I was having these thoughts initially. Some background info on myself first of all I don't practice any religion at all, and I'm unlikely too, just not my cup of tea so too speak. However I do take my spirituality with a strong dose of the Pagan. And for awhile I have been thinking that Tori uses the Faeries as sort of an archetype for her spiritual belief. That for her they represent the animate in nature. The same way all the various gods and elementals do for many pagans, or the way perhaps all the nature spirits did for the first peoples. And as somebody else said angels as well. Faeries in their very root are a similiar concept too these, at least in my mind. However most people don't think the animate force of nature that exists within all things when Faerie comes up, they think of tinkerbell. Maybe the way I've layed out my understanding of Faerie is wrong according too the way most see it. But this is how I've always thought of Faerie, and since I believe in the basic underlying concept I would have too say that I do believe in faerie in a very rough manner. I do still wonder if what I've always believed (under a different name mind you), and which i've been assuming is the same thing Tori has always been talking about, is in fact really the same thing. You know what I think is my first really serious posting too this list, neat huh :) Matt - -- Matthew Skillings eternity@golden.net http://www.golden.net/~eternity/ "It's true that your are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you." - 10,000 Maniacs (These Are Days) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 19:15:28 PDT From: "Nicole Parker" Subject: Austin Tx tickets hey all!
