There's no possible way to get a bad spot...Even the furthest you can get from the stage is close enough to have that intimate concert feel. I'll just get the album when it comes out or >whatever. I can totally relate to this. When I started following Tori Amos back in 1992, I was very excited about the fact that this 'new, unknown' artist had so many CDsingles (from the UK) to offer, with all these extra tracks. I bought them all, just because every single CD-single had new tracks on them. Then, by the end of the year, the first bootleg, "A kiss on the glass", was released and while the quality left a bit to be desired, I thought, 'what the hey, I am going to collect all the bootlegs'. Little did I know that in the months to follow many bootlegs were released, so after buying a couple of them, I abandoned this plan. It was just not possible to buy them all, and many of them sucked anyway. Then in 1994, "Under the pink" was released. In some ways I hate that album because then Tori really took off. They started releasing lots of promo's, and the difference between 'God' (US) and 'Cornflake girl' (UK) was interesting for a while, until the only different B-track from 'God' (Home on the range) was released on 'Pretty good year' in the UK. So I started collecting all those CD-singles, despite the fact that there were no 'exclusive' tracks on them anymore. When 'Boys for Pele' was released I sort of lost touch. I'm still not too fond of the album, it's what I call 'neurotic' on some tracks, and the live performances were, well, appalling, especially the later ones (which I heard through some bootlegs). Now, with 'Choirgirl hotel', I like the material better, but the recent releases are pretty annoying. I mean, apart from 'Spark' there've only been promo's, and they cost at least 10 to 15 UKPounds - and more if they are 'withdrawn'. I don't think it's reasonable to pay so much for a simple CD-single. So I've reached about the same conclusion as Dan has: I'm only buying releases containing new tracks. The only exception will be a 7" single, since I have collected those since I was 5 years old. (Does anyone know that 'Spark' was released on 7" in the US? Or is it a promo-only release? (I don't have it yet)) I sure hope that the remix(es?) of Raspberry Swirl and those extra tracks will be released. If things don't take a turn for the better, I fear more & more ToriFans will realize that they are being used as milking cows, and decide they won't be part of it any longer. I think that is harmful for the artist, because what it boils down to is that the music becomes less important than all the 'side issues'. Plus less sales means less popularity, less effort from the record company and eventually no (new) music from the artist. I've seen it happen too many times already. I do hope we won't lose Tori due to a wrong marketing concept. Richmond! Hi Mike, it's Joey!!!!!!!!!!! Just got home from the Richmond show, and WOW!!! What a show! It was eighth Tori show, and my third Plugged show... Tori did "Siren" for the first time on this tour tonight and it was incredible. Other special songs that Tori hasnt' done much were "Mary", "Pandora's Aquarium", and "Honey". SHe looked brilliant, sounded awesome, and everything was just wonderful! We arrived at the Landmark Theatre in Richmond around 2 pm today and baracades were already up. There were already about 20-25 people lined up. The baracades were on the sidewalk too, so there wasn't much room left for meet and greet. I was a bit upset because I thought 2 would have been more than early enough, and i was at least 4 or 5 people back. Things just arent' the same anymore. Meet and Greets used to be quiet and very personal, now you pass something over somebody's head in hopes of getting it signed.... Rodney, Lisa, and Fynthia were already there. Tori got off the bus around 4:30 and came to greet. Once again it was noisy and not very personal. I had a gift, a letter, and a picture for Tori, I could have passed it to her, but I wanted to give it to her myself, so I kept everything in hopes of getting it to her after the show. She didnt' stay long either, maybe 5 minutes, then it was off for soundcheck. We walked to the front of the theatre and got to hear about 3 seconds of "Siren" when they told us we couldn't be there. The Devlins were great as usual! They were a bit more talkative than the last few shows. Tori came at 9:23... Oh by the way, i NEVER sneak anything in, but tonight i sneaked in 2 cameras, and a small audio recorder, i was real curious!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHe was wearing blue cargo jeans, a blue polyester tight shirt, with the sparkly navy blue apron/dress/thingee... There was a theme almost tonight "She's back, I"m back, it's back"... she introduced herself and said it was could to BE BACK in the south, that it was their first stop on the tour in the south. Then on the improv intro to Cornflake Girl, she sang something about she's back, oh it's back... This could be anything, but I'm sure some will speculate that it's referring to Tori possibly being pregnant again. Also during "The Happy Phantom", she sanged Whoo-hoo, "back again, whoo hoo she's back... who knows? The highlight of the concert for me was "Mary", it's always been one of my favorites and I was hoping she'd add it to the band reportoire, but tonight, like the Cinci show last month, she did it during the secret time. However, it was still beautiful. This was the second time i've witnessed Tori play Mary for Lisa. Lisa is a fellow EWF that has been around since LE. I met her last year at a show. Tonight was her EIGHTEENTH SHOW!! wow! Anyway, she was up front and center for the meet and greet and asked Tori to play Mary. Lisa says Tori refers to her as the "mary girl", even though her name is Lisa!! haha After the show, I skipped out early, during "Horses" to go outside and get lined up for meet and greet, But wouldn't you know it, it was already about 30 people lined, while the show was still underway!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS CRAZY. Then five minutes i looked behind me and all hell had broken loose. It seemed that every last person inside the show decided to come out for M&G. That's when it got really hot and I decided to wait till the next show to talk to her. Then i watched it grow and grow, and before I knew it, it was a mob. THe police were there, and the crowd had spilled into the street so bad traffic could not pass. THere had to be 500 people waiting. Then Steve came out, he was furious at the Theatre staff for letting it get out of hand. The tour bus was completley surrounded by fans... unbelievable... WHen Tori finally did come out, she didn't stay long, couldnt' talk to anyone, then went on her way. Waved to everyone, there was more applaus with the crowd outside then then there was inside the show!! All in All: 1) the show was great, music wonderful, tori sounded and looked beautiful, BUT 2) her fans are too mainstream, and the M&G have desolved to something so much less than they were before, it's not even a meet and greet, it's her stopping for two seconds to sign something... It's kind of sad really.... I'd really wondered about this for some time. I still can't imagine a whole line of non-native English speakers meeting with her, but I similarly can't imagine her being anything less than completely patient with everyone. (Of course.) I would expect hand gestures to become involved from time to time, also, yes? > I have to make a couple of comments about the American Ears > With Feet. I met very nice people during my tour in Europe > and I still have contact with many of them. But the hospitality > that we encountered during our days in the States was incredible! That's been my experience, too, especially on this tour. Lots of help in getting between shows, finding food and places to sleep--any and everything. Although I also must mention that while planning my trip to the U.K. this spring, as well as once I got there, I was similarly met with enthusiastic help from my main English friend, without whom I could have never had such great times over there, and another amazing person who goes to all the U.K. shows who was also quick with advice, etc., whenever needed. I think maybe it's a bit more pronounced over here because there were more of us North Americans who were going to multiple shows in a row, as you guys were. Whatever it is, seeing and traveling with folks to and between shows this year has been more emotionally moving than I would have ever imagined possible. To show up at a concert hundreds of miles from one's home town only to be met by a half dozen or more heartfelt hugs is an astonishing event. Everything is fast over here, I suppose. Maybe that partially explains why folks sometimes come to feel so close so quickly. > In general, the Tori experience in America is like a huge party > during the entire day of the show, starting from the time the > first people arrive for the meet&greet until after the show when > everybody leaves again, after Tori and the band have already left, > of course. I must interject, Eric, that there are many people who simply drive to the show with their friends and then leave when it's done. Those folks are not the people with whom you guys mainly spent time, of course. :-) On the other hand, long days spent with many people around the shows can seem like amazing, endless marathons of fun, but it can wear one out in a hurry. I enjoy hanging out around the venue with the folks even if I'm not trying nor expecting to speak with Tori, just to share time with the folks, and then going out for dinner before the show seems like a natural thing to do next. Likewise, it's usually pretty nuts trying to meet Tori after a show, but it's an electric feeling to be out there when she comes out back, and to once again share time and vibes with the folks. 10am to 1am far from home can make for some long days, though, especially in the blazing sun. > I cannot say that I observed much more screaming during songs > during the shows in the States - the venues were just bigger. Thank you. My thoughts were that at some shows on *both* continents there were people screaming inappropriately. I've seen wonderful audiences on both sides of the pond, rude ones, and dead ones as well. I will say, though, that some of the Philly audiences on the DDI tour were loud enough with their insane screaming that I thought I was at Shea Stadium in 1965 at a Beatles concert, and there's no *way* that an audience like that is gonna be found over there--anywhere. Period. > Finally, please allow me some more words, because there are so > many people reading all those messages who might not have the > chance to see Tori during the tour at all. > Being a 'Toriphile' and joining the 'Ears With Feet' really > has nothing at all to do with how many shows you have seen or > how many times you have met Tori or how many autographs you > have or how many pictures taken together with her. > Nothing at all. > > In my opinion it has to do with being touched by her music, > being moved so much by just listening to her that you actually > feel an emotional connection with this woman who creates all > this beauty and who you do not know at all (except the scratches > on the surface that you observe via interviews) and who does not > know you. > It means that you actually care about what happens to her > and hope that she is well. And I want to add to that, how wonderful it always is to be able to share with someone the experience of their first concert. Poppin' those Tori Concert Virgin Cherries is some big fun for everyone. :-D (Does that translate into German?) > Those of us who have the chance to thank her for what she has > done for us can try to give back to her a little bit of the > energy that she gives us in her songs and performances. > I am sure she knows that those of us that she sees at the > meet&greets only represent many more who feel the same. > And I hope she is proud of that. I'm sure she does, although most of those folks seem to be showing up in person recently. :-) Anyone blessed with being able to attend even one show is a lucky soul. It tears my heart out to think of all the people who'll never be able to make it to a show because they live somewhere other than the U.S. or Europe. It's humbling to me to have been able to see shows nearly at whim over the last two tours. I am one lucky bastard. Thanks a lot for the thoughts, Eric. It was nothing short of a pleasure and a privilege to have met and spent some time with all of you. I hold a special place in my heart for the conspicuously devoted among us. I still can't figure out how we ended up not speaking with one another in England. But we'll always have Jersey. ;-) Take care, and try to come back soon.
