This is actually Nadyne (nadyne@rmta.org) posting from here at ToriCon. I wanted to update y'all on the auction that we're holding in conjunction with the Con that benefits RAINN. First of all, I'd like to note that a couple of items have been added to the auction: * UK Crucify ltd ed box set * Oingo Boingo video * RAINN Lithograph * autographed Tori 3x4 poster -- Tori seated on a bed wearing blue jeans, boots and a green sweater. The last two items have not yet been added to the website (hey, this is being posted in the middle of a dinner/dance!), but we are accepting bids on them. Secondly, I'd like to draw your attention to some items that we feel are of great interest to Tori fans and collectors. The first item is the "I Believe in Peace Bitch" necklace from the UtP tour. This item has grown increasingly rare over the past few years. We have one up for auction right now. The current (10pm Saturday) high bid is $90. The second item is an autographed UtP pink vinyl. This item was autographed by Tori specifically for auctioning off at this convention, and Tori has expressed great interest in the final bid on this item. It is autographed in pink ink, and bears the inscription "God with a Big G". The current high bid on this item is $200. We at rmta do not normally endorse increasing the value of an item because it has Tori's autograph (since she gives up it so freely), but this was autographed by Tori to help us raise money for RAINN. Another popular item is a hand painted Tori t-shirt. It has the South Park characters and Tori playing piano, and says "Winter kicks ass". The current high bid on this item is $75. There are a total of 22 items available for auction. 100% of the proceeds from this auction will be donated to RAINN. Last year's auction raised $1000, and we're hoping to beat that this year. Remember, we do have other interesting items, including the RAINN Retrospective promo CD (the only place that you can get the Twilight mix of Putting the Damage On) as well as five Pauline Stuckey prints (which you'll recognize from the Bee-Sides sheet music book), a shrink-wrapped copy of Live X 3 (including a live verison of Silent All These Years), and several other items. The website for the auction is http://www.concentric.com/~Jessw/RAINN98.HTM Bidding closes Sunday, 9 August 1998, at 2pm. Email all bids to Jess at jessw@cris.com. As the organizer of ToriCon 98, I'm very pleased that the bidding has gone so well. I would like to thank everyone who's hit the site -- last I checked, we'd received over 4000 hits. Bid early, bid high -- it all goes to RAINN. :) Nadyne nadyne@rmta.org ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 00:28:56 -0700 From: ~*jenn*~ Subject: Re: tori on conan obrien Cindy2Love@aol.com wrote: > Doesn't she cut out lines due to time constraints? i also thought that she had to edit the "beene's got some pot" verse because of the pot reference ~ remember tom petty's song that he had to change the words on for mtv? something about a joint? well, that's what i figured. but i was rewatching the leno performance from may (when she sang spark), and i noticed that she edited one of the "fate/overtime" parts in the middle (she usually sings that whole "verse" twice, but only sang it once on leno), so i'm thinking it's time constraints. after all, the show was over at 1:35, and tori didn't even come on until 1:30!!! > They never give her the time she deserves. so true...terrible..she deserves the entire show. who cares about slots and 7' grouchos? :) torihugs and faeriekisses, ~~*jenn*~ - -- ~~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~*:~ "We are all Faeries living underneath a leaf on a lily pad" ~Tori~ ~~*Come Dance in Jenn's Faerie Ring*~ http://fly.to/faeriering ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 00:30:23 -0400 (EDT) From: geministar@webtv.net (Jess*) Subject: Albany and Rochester shows I'm asking on my own behalf and on that of several others if anyone got a decent quality recording of either the Albany or Rochester '98 shows. Please email *the list*, as many people are interested in these tapes (trust me!) My friend and I went to the Albany show and recorded it with a simple hand-held recorder, bass-boot on, mic aimed toward the stage, and the sound quality is pretty good (though it cut off during "Sister Janet" and at the end of "Horses"). I *DO NOT* have a copy of this boot in my hands to trade *at this time*, so please don't ask. Once she sends me my copy, then I will post about it. She was also going to try to record the Rochester show in the same manner (and I haven't talked to her recently, so I don't know if she did or not). Please let the list(s) know if you got a *good quality* recording of either show. I would hate to be trading off inferior copies of the Albany show (and poss. No, really..., RIGHT NOW!!!! :) My Fellow Darling Ears With Feet, I find mention of thorough Tori info everywhere around this area of the internet. I always see someone commenting on each and every Tori solo album, her "Bee Sides", and even things about "Y Kant Tori Read". Those of you who are die-hard and fanatical about her (which probably includes all of you) AND have her biography (entitled, "All These Years"), also have seen in the back discography pages, that she released a thing or two on her own MEA (her initials) Records under her REAL name. But there's something I haven't known anyone making reference to: Tori Amos does a BRILLIANT (duh...what else from her?!), electronica-type dance song on 1996's Party Of Five Soundtrack. The song is called "Blue Skies" and is a collaberation with someone known as BT (I believe Brian Transeau). Now maybe when it came out in 1996, y'all discussed it, but since I didn't have access to the internet then (and didn't know of these Tori-sites, etc.), I thought I'd mention it now to let those of you who DIDN'T know...., well, know. *I'd* want to know! I mean, there is bit of more piano and they fade out Tori's voice a little in some parts (it sounds more like she's singing in the background, rather than "in front"), but there is no drastic changes at all. Am I crazy or is the beat just a little bit more "dancey" and less "bouncy" than on the album version? Hmm... maybe it's just me. Anyway, thanks a lot for letting us hear it. I thought this was pretty scary. It turned out fine, but has very bad-precedent-setting potential. Earlier this summer, I wrote an argument about what's appropriate, defending some yelling and screaming during a concert. I thought the girl leaping for the stage was way over the line. Some of us after the show were left wondering aloud, "What was *that*?" Tori never caught a wave at this show, and had only fitful moments of inspiration. Her mind was clearly on something other than the show, but she turned in a professional performance. Other than several instances where it was apparent that she was still not quite 100% again health-wise and didn't have the vocal stuff to do what she wanted, I'm sure that to most people, it was a fine show. I was way towards the rear of the house in a box so I was pretty well separated from the overall mood of the crowd, but my trusted friends who were in front assured me that the audience was DEAD, and that one guy even MADE A CELLULAR PHONE CALL DURING ME AND A GUN! No depths to the lack of respect and cluelessness which inspire some people toward such achievement, apparently. A real "full moon show," indeed. It kinda reminded me of the May 22, 1998 Glasgow show in which she clearly had other personal things on her mind, except that show was also marred by extremely low energy on her part, to which the rest of the band followed in kind, leading the entire proceedings into a downward spiral. Thankfully, it wasn't like that last night. I was actually fairly concerned for her at the Glasgow show. But by the next show two days later she was fine. (The *audience* was dead then, but she was fine.) Anyhow, I expect her to bounce back by the next show Tuesday in Richmond. Two days off will be good for her physical health, although I have to say, two days off with the family could very well end up causing even more things to be on her mind other than the music. Lets hope not. I prefer to hope it will tend to make her crave the sanctuary of the music even more. I know that by then *I* will. Best wishes, Tori. I love you. Be seeing you, Richard Handal, H.G. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 12:59:20 -0500 From: "Giovanni Mantilla" Subject: fiascos: my own little story Hi Mike, Paul and everyone, > >>the only place I saw posters advertising the "Choirgirl" album was in >>my student union. Abysmal. I guess I have no perspective about this since I don't live in the UK, but I am going to tell you a story that will make you laugh --or cry. In Colombia (lost in the woods of South America) we don't get singles. Sometimes not albums, either. But if a song is a "hit" on the radio, they will release the album. Obviously, people have absolutely *no* idea of who Tori Amos is around here. But that's fair, because there is no promotion, no posters, and I would venture to say--not even promos. But well, import stores, or rather, music stores that sometimes import albums, and only one of them to be exact, brought 2 copies of the choirgirl album, like 2 months after the US release. And they're still there. No one has bought them and I doubt anyone ever will. I got my copy a month after the US release thanks to a fellow Toriphile. And even though I have made Tori "popular" among my school friends, and even got a couple of them to buy Pele, Earthquakes and Pink, I doubt they will ever be considered Toriphiles, simply because there is no way of getting her material. Except for the internet, that is. But no one has access to the web. You will think it's funny, but when I got BfP (a year and a half after the US release; that's when we got it) over a year ago, this store had all the albums, plus the Crucify EP. I did not know much about Tori and it took me a couple of months to buy BfP... and within that time, Crucify dissapeared. I did not exactly care because I hadn't even bought BfP yet. But then I did, and then, while browsing through the "bargain bin" (so to speak, we don't have those here) I found a new LE (still wrapped and imported from France) and almost did not buy it. As a matter of fact, I only bought it (I was doing some Madonna shopping and had casually found most of her albums in the bin) because I kept myself from getting Madonna's "You Can Dance" only because they had 2 copies of it. But I did get LE. A month later or so, I got UtP. And never saw it again. Some other store brought it like 6 months after, and I encouraged a friend of mine to get it. I have not seen it again ever since. They still have copies of LE (still in the bargain bin), of Pele (used to be in the bargain bin but they removed it from there and priced it higher in another store of the same owners) and of choirgirl. I am kicking myself now because I did not buy Pele when it was still wrapped and had that cute little sticker that said "Includes Caught A Lite Sneeze, Talula". A few months later I ran across the Crucify EP in another store and bought it for $15. Overpriced yeah, but I had to get it. It was late when I found out about buying stuff over the net and, as a matter or fact, I'm still learning. And it is very frustrating when you don't have all the money you need and you see that you can buy all that you have ever wanted. >Well, that's one more poster than I saw ... ;) ... I agree, the "Q" magazine article and cover were great promotion, in a way. And those other articles and reviews too. But still not enough. I don't think I have ever seen an article about Tori here... there was just something about her on this newspaper gazzette in an aritcle about women in rock. I remember they said that she sounded like a "mermaid on acid". Hmm... I did not know about her then. >I totally disagree with what's happening with the UK singles chart. But in spite of all these regulations, e/w are still *capable* of releasing singles with running time of over 20 minutes (right?), kissing off chart positions that way, but I doubt that will happen. >Ah, so you saw the advert on teletext today for "attractive teenagers who >can sing and dance", then... hmm.. nice.
